Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame

I just want to recognize two people for their hard work in organizing last night's Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Buffalo Broadcasters Association President Dave Gillen and Hall of Fame Chairman Don Angelo are largely responsible for making last night's event the success it was. They were assisted by many other Association members. I won't name names because I don't want to miss anyone. But I want the broadcasting community here in Buffalo to know that this is entirely a volunteer effort. They did a wonderful job and are deserving of our thanks.

Also, congratulations to this year's inductees -- Dick Rifenberg, Mike Mombrea Sr., Ron Rice, Susan Banks, Kevin O'Connell and Don Criqui. If you didn't make it, check out today's Buffalo News for a nice summary of the event.

While this board is a great way to share stories from the past and present, Buffalo Broadcasters is preserving the physical history of our industry -- old film and audio tapes, discarded control boards, etc. -- and recognizing the contributions of so many legendary broadcasters through the Hall of Fame. So, I just wanted to send out kudos for a job well done.

Terrific inductees into BBHOF this year, as are all the previous inductees! I have a suggestion for 2 possible considerations for next year. One is Tom Darro, longtime host on WJJL, and a great ambassador for Niagara Falls. The other, also with a Niagara Falls connection, is Bob Rogers, who for many years was the GM at WJJL and he was able to steer the station through some tough times. Bob also was a sales manager at both WNIA(when they had commercials)and WUSJ. Both men touched my and a lot of others broadcasting lives.

Hats off to the men and women behind the scenes who make the annual award ceremony the success that it has become. While most of the public reads and hears about the inductees and the stars on stage, the show wouldn't be possible without the people who spend countless hours planning it and putting it together. Congratulations on a job well done. Again.

What are the chances of moving to a larger venue? I've heard several colleagues say that they wanted to attend, but the event was a sell-out. Does WNED volunteer the space? I understand if it's a question of money.

Indeed, WNED doesn't charge for the space. But that's not the primary motivation for holding the event there. It used to be held at the Tralf. But that space was even more cramped, and when Bobby Militello lost his lease, the Buffalo Broadcasters thought it would be best to consider another venue. It was a pleasant surprise that this year's event sold out. The previous two had not. In fact, there was plenty of space last year. I'm sure the size of the venue, and the fact that this year's event sold out, will be discussed as planning begins on next year's event.
