Buffalo Broadcasting Awards (2008)

A few saturday's ago, this was on "adelphia 13" ( i know...*sigh),
and it was awesome to see the following:

I had my non-radio job I had to get back to, but did happen to see:

1. Art Wander's Segment, and his *BLAST* at the consultant's of today.
In Part:
"...I Ran 35 radio stations, in markets, small medium and large...
and we didnt have consultants, suits, etc _..." He continued to
remark about a PROGRAMMER should earn their $$$ programming!

(agree)

2.
It was also*AMAZING* to see....these 400 some PEOPLE,
be PEOPLE !! Say some one from channel 2, could comment
on a channel 4 talent, and there was no uncomfortable silence.

Also, its important to note: There was no cheap shots, or low-blows...
a little hazing, maybe but nothing dirty.

3.
(more like 2.B)
there was an acceptance with each station being there, and no sense
of rivals... ie: Don Paul, when speaking didnt have to dance around and
say "...the 'other' channels sports director"......
-he addressed him "ED...."

Or
other speakers didnt have to say some thing like:
"...currently at...WGRZ, but when I was 'some where else' early
in my career at 'the other station' the biggest ICON....
(ryhmes with 'nerve'), mentored me, at WKBW........ lol

It was GREAT to see the room at ease, despite every day a thread
and post on this forum, speculating who maybe fired next; or why
radio may be off the aire in the near future....

4.
this was important to me...
(4A)

no station was "over rePresented"
....and, some thing like a 50 years of WKBW/lifeTime award ...
was followed by some thing completely different,
(i believe it was jamestown radio icon, unfortunately i am un aware who he was),
but another VERY PROFESSIONAL !!

glad it wasnt: wgrz, wgrz, wgrz, and the same station getting all the attn!

(4B)
Sue O'neil seemed to be the MC, along with Don Paul.
and both were extremely professional !!!

glad it wasnt like:
it was Hi, I'm Sue...listen to me, and log onto mystar...

or...(awarding the previous winner).... "another fine excellent talent,
and speaking of excellence, our star 102 sales staff.....

NONE OF THAT BS.

this said ALOT for the industry,
if i was in the business, i would be PROUD to be a part of the
Buffalo Broadcasters Association!!! truely, the best!

Their website is great - in case you haven't checked it out yet: www.buffalobroadcasters.com - a fun thing to look over on a cold snowy day.

In the 2008 inductees page, the Barry Lillis bio mentions a real blast from the past - Barry's Cat's Pajamas - for all of you never lived in Buffalo people reading this, that was a Channel 2 post-Late Night with David Letterman show with Barry hosting a nightly collection of bad old movies and old TV shows(such as Death Valley Days with Ronald Reagan). Barry was just great at that. A favorite of mine during my (fortunately) brief slacker period. His bio says he's now an Orthodox Catholic Priest? That's Greek Orthodox?

I preferred the Randi Naughton version of Cat's Pajamas. MUCH more photogenic than Barry...

Art Wander ranting about consultants, eh? The guy has some serious cred as a PD back in the day (I think he worked for Plough and WOR-FM, NYC when it was a progressive station), but when he was doing sports talk on 1400 and 550, he was the master of the malapropism. And that Polish drawl... works great in Buffalo.

As to Father Barry Lillis: This is the guy who, along with the late Jerry Fedell, at one time had a website for and ran a Niagara Falls wedding chappel? What Greek Orthodox Seminary did Father Lillis study at and graduate? Where was he was ordained and by what Bishop or Metropolitan? (I'm kinda curious about Church stuff, not that I'm sanctified by any means.) Just because a man wears a Roman Collar and black suit doesn't necessarily mean he's a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Just sayin'...

Yeah, I recall reading their the Falls Wedding Chapel in, I think, The Buffalo News many years ago. But it seemed, IIRC, like some kind of nondenominational type thing. I'm not sure either one of them had been out of broadcasting long enough then to have completed divinity school. The Greek Orthodoxy thing comes as a surprise. Then again, how long has he been out of broadcasting?

It's been a while since Barry Lillis has been in the news. His religious calling {I believe} is non demoninational. The last news article that I recall seeing had him working in Niagara Falls with many who had been down on their luck. He seemed to be trying to help others where he had made mistakes in his past.
