Bulldogs Radio

Has anyone heard anything new regarding Georgia football broadcasts? I know Larry Munson is going to be calling the Sugar Bowl. Is this his last broadcast?

Any ideas on a successor? Scott Howard, Jeff Hullinger, Brad Nessler?

No official announcement has been made as of yet regarding the 2008 season. It wouldn't surprise me though if the Sugar Bowl ended up being Larry Munson's last game as the voice of the Dawgs. Scott Howard and Eric Zeier will most likely take over whenever Munson decides to retire. They've done a very good job on road games this season so I see no reason why they wouldn't be the choice.

Depending upon his health, Munson might go for just doing the home games again in 08; especially since things are shaping up that UGA could be a National Title contender. If he thinks we can make a run for it, I'm sure he'll hang on at least 1 more year.

Scott Howard and Eric Z did a great job on away games. Here's hoping they get the gig when that time eventually comes!

I have lived in Kentucky since '99 and missed hearing Munson on the games. It figures now that XM has picked up SEC games he would retire! Seriously, I understand Munson is having health issues. I wouldn't not be surprised if this year is his last. He will be missed.

Hullinger?? What are you, a masochist?

Nessler would be great. He could do his Munson impression the whole time and no one would be the wiser.

There are almost as many Munson impersonations as there are Georgia fans. And nobody *quite* gets it right. (I know mine's not even close... :D)

My vote is for Scott Howard, when the day comes. I can't think of anybody else who'd do the ballgames justice.

Nessler would be great and his Munson impression is maybe the best I've heard. However, there's no way he'd leave his cushy job at ABC/ESPN to do radio. That'd be a massive drop in pay for one thing.

Re: Brad Nessler

I'm sure I could answer this with a simple Googling but.....
Why does Brad Nessler's name keep popping up as a possible replacement? Is he a UGA grad?

I would have to say that Scott and Eric stand pretty good chance at the job when it opens. Scott provides the needed play by play skills and EZ provides insight and the name recognition they want associated with the broadcast.

He's not a UGA grad. I assume it has to do with his ties to the area both in terms of his past employment (WSB radio, Falcons, Georgia Tech), the fact that he lives in Atlanta, and he's friends with Munson.

If Brad Nessler comes recommended by Larry Munson, I'm sure that he will be a great replacement.
Haven't heard many UGA games on the radio, in fact, I haven't seen many. But I do plan to watch the sUGAr Bowl.

Also, if the next guy lives in Atlanta, he won't have to go far for the games.
The only bad thing about Atlanta for UGA fans is Tech.
(Can't spell sugar without UGA, and can't spell UGA without GA)

Don't know that Munson has officially recommended anyone. I really doubt he would, at least publicly.
Don't think it would matter a whole lot even if he did; UGA and Cox Radio will be making that decision.

What I do wonder is if WSB will make a space on their staff and on air someplace for the replacement.

Munson didn't technically recommend anyone publicly, but earlier this year when it was announced that he wasn't doing road games he did say that he supported the idea of giving Scott Howard a chance... that Scott had paid his dues or something to that effect. Scott has worked with Larry since 1993 and has been the voice of the hoops Dawgs since '96. As I said before, whenever the time comes, I'd be shocked if it's not Scott Howard and Eric Zeier getting the nod (both UGA grads, by the way). Howard and Zeier did a fine job this season and got better with each game. I think the powers that be viewed this season as a bit of a trial run for what would happen once Larry decides to retire. It's up to Larry as to how long that trial run continues before becoming official, IMO.

I think Larry's got maybe one more "home-only" season in him...he said so in one of the "Inside Sports (movie group)" updates, IIRC.

I repeat my vote for Scott Howard, not that it has any weight with Cox or UGA.

Munson

WSB reported that Munson will not be making the trip to New Orleans after all. Scott and Eric will be doing the broadcast instead.

Are you guys serious?
Why would Brad Nessler leave a prominent national job that pays probably 4 times as much if not more, to do a Bulldogs radio broadcast job that reportedly does not pay $75,000?
That kind of talk is absurd.
Also, Scott is doing a solid job but Eric is obviously learning on the job and that should not be happening.
Woolverton is doing it at 790, but GA should want better.

You obviously haven't listened to Scott and Eric call a game, aside from maybe their first game this year. Zeier improved with each game and has been doing an excellent job ever since that first game. He adds a lot of insight to the broadcast. Really, the only problem I had with his first game was that he was shouting a bit too much (too excited, I guess), but he has corrected that. Zeier has been "learning on the job" from the standpoint that he's never done this before this season, but if you didn't know he'd never done it before, you wouldn't guess it from listening to him (after that first game). I suppose perhaps from the viewpoint of a by the book stickler of broadcasting fundamentals, he might still be making a couple mistakes here and there, but to the fans listening to the game, nitpicking technical broadcasting faux pas isn't really important. Fans aren't listening to the games to critique/nitpick those types of things. They're actually listening to the game.

Well I consider myself quite the fan of football and have listened to broadcasts and broadcasters do football games on TV and radio for years.
Wes Durham does one of the best play by play jobs in the country. Scott is good, but nowhere near his class of broadcaster. Zeier is amateur hour sounding. He is way too hyper and over-speaks on the broadcasts as he reacts to plays unfolding. These are mistakes made by amateurs on college broadcasts, not 50,000 watt networks with large affiliate bases.
Zeier seems to be a fine guy, Met him at a client event when he was with Homebank and he was a fine gentlemen. That does not mean that he should be walking into a position like that and learnign on the job.
The Georgia broadcasts have always had a strange sound to them anyway. Loren offers nothing, the pre-game and halftime shows are populated with non-football garbage segments.
Maybe things will change. If Zeier does get the job I am sure that over the years with some coaching he will have a chance to get better.

Could it be he's a damn fine play-by-play man? Or does that not matter?

I thought Scott Howard did a great job, better than I ever expected. I agree that Eric Zeier was way too wordy. It got a little better after he stopped yelling, but I always had the mental picture of him redfaced, with a vein popping out of the side of his head, racing to get all of his forced analysis in before the next snap. It was tiring...
