Admittedly I did not listen. I did, however, read AZCentral. "According to a transcript provided to reporters..." I can only assume that's legitimate. And from that transcript:
"You ought to be ashamed of yourself, Julie Erfle," [Jacobs said Wednesday, according to a transcript provided to reporters.] "I don't know how you can look at your kids and do this. . . . When the next police officer is gunned down or killed . . . is it fair to blame you? Because I am going to give you partial blame.
"Put that in your legacy for your husband."
How, pray tell, is that not "tak(ing) this woman to task personally"?
Or was he misquoted?
If that's what he said, there is no excuse for his comments. And no excuse for your supporting it.
So, let me get this straight: It is okay to take Bruce to task for expressing his opinion in the public forum, however it is not okay to take a woman to task for expressing her opinion in the public forum.
Bruce feels that it is counterintuitive for the wife of a slain police officer to advocate on the side of amnesty for illegal immigration, when it was an illegal immigrant that committed the crime against the police officer. Had their been better enforcement of the law on all levels, this crime may have been prevented. That is the basic context for Bruce's opinion.
This is not all that dissimilar to many who feel Cindy Sheehan is tarnishing the legacy of her son by her very negative actions/opinions against the war, the US government, the country in general and support of people such as Hugo Chavez.
This isn't about whether I agree or not, but I just think it's shameful that some of you are holding up a double standard. If this were a woman sitting in her home minding her own business and suddenly Bruce just came on the radio and said, "you know, this Julie Erfle is just..." well then that would be a different story. However, by putting herself in the PUBLIC SPOTLIGHT, she has become a PUBLIC figure, much in teh same way that any broadcaster is a public figure by going on the public airwaves. She was asked to speak and she chose to do so, therefore she has entered the public arena on a very controversial issue. Bruce has every right to say whatever he feels about her, the issue, etc, much in the same vein that she has every right to say what she wants about him.
I realize that there's some 'code' about protecting people, women/widows and so forth, but that 'code' goes by the wayside when that person choses to step into the public, period.
Once again, and I'll hammer this point until you people either get it or I simply tire of saying it; when you don't listen to a show and then proceed to comment on it I believe that it deflates the credibility of your commentary substantially. I know that this board is anti Jacobs for the most part, I get that I'm swimming against the current trying to argue logically with people that can't stand Jacobs (not all of you are that way, but there are quite a few).
You don't have to agree with Bruce at all, but you should at least be fair.
