...to bother with an All-Fascists-All-The-Time Chump Channel Reunion ;D ...

At least it gets ratings.
...it gets *junk* ratings, like all the hate talk crap polluting the airwaves...
I would suggest reading the scarborough report sometime if I were you... I think you'd be surprised what "junk" ratings that type of station gets. Let's just put it this way, how many Mercades ads to you hear on KPHX... because you certainly hear them on KFYI. Mind you, I think good ratings are good ratings... I really don't care who listens just so long as they're listening; good thing you're not the PD/GM/Market manager around here.

...as a format split among four stations that can't draw a full tenth of the listening audience combined, hate talk's ratings are junk, period. If you're stupid enough to admire the Chump Channel Brain Trust, have at it; I, on the other hand, deal in reality...

Actually, only 4 stations that do N/T actually show up in the survey, and they are KFYI, KTAR-FM, KKNT and KPHX (Of course KPHX occasionally shows up as a " -- " but still..)

Anyway, if you add up to KFYI, KTAR-FM and KKNT they exceed a tenth of the listening audience, whereas KPHX shows up as about a 100th of the audience.

I don't care about the stations in terms of format or who is on them... I care about numbers (for the purposes of this conversation) and the numbers tell me that KFYI, KTAR--and to some extent KKNT--are legitimate news/talk stations in this market with a good listener base, KPHX could easily have a listener party in a corner booth at the Denny's on 7th and Camelback.

If this were Portland, perhaps it's a different conversation, but here in the big city, them's the breaks, kid.

The elephant in the room is the age of the audience. If that base is 55+, you've got a format that's expensive to produce with lessening returns. Talk is going through the same pains as Oldies - how do you get younger people to listen without telling the core to buzz off? KTAR has stopped some of the bleeding, but KFYI and KKNT are overloaded 55+. Moving to FM alone isn't enough - if you put a bunch of angry old men on the radio, they're going to reach a bunch of angry old men.

Progressive talk gets younger demos in Portland and Madison, but you can't extrapolate that nationwide. Sports, on the other hand, pulls in younger adults and better power ratios without effort.

If there's a talk format that deserves to move to FM, it's sports.

Doubt it, as long as TMISU have a lock on local sports with Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty. They aint in no rush to decimate one of the best Ancient Modulation signals by moving to FM. What's going to 95~Five is KFWhyEye, where young farts will over power the old farts.

And speaking of the 25 year old talker....wassup with those weird program starts in their promos?: Jim Sharpe at 5:04, Rush Limbaugh at 10:06, the Nearly Bald One at 7:04, etc. Has KFWhyEye installed a drifting lamptimer?

That's PPM "appointment setting." Some consultant stood up at a seminar and said that you know that people are going to tune out so you need to remind them to tune in at a specific time so they come back.

So everybody now says "I'll have that for you at 7:04" instead of "I'll have that for you after 7."

The other half of this equation is network vs. local. Much of network syndication begins
each hour at :06. KFYI has chosen not to run their TOH news window all the way to :06,
but instead just to :04, prior to any hour with a local talkmeister.

Of course it really should be El Rushbo at 9:06 during DST... ;D

And what will happen to local talk if 95-point-five-fifty KFYI comes about and acquires
the Beckster from KT'R-FM? Will he still be a multi-hour rain delay (i.e., PM drive),
or do they slot him in AM drive, either live or an hour delay? Will the Sharpemeister
be flipped between early morning and some other slot? Will the Nearly Bald One agree
to do part or all of afternoon drive?

Simple: Jim Sharpe, TNBO, El Rushbo, Beck, Broomhandle, Hannity, Coast 2 Coast. Savage goes to Freedom 5~Fifty. Listeners aren't overly concerned about time shifting of popular syndicated talkers. The Nurse and I'd take a "Best of Rush" over some of those lame subs he uses simply because they make him sound better.

and btw...Los Buckeye Boyz think Broomhead has really developed since given PMD.

There's no way the country's #2 yakmeister winds up post-drive. No one is listening to talk radio at that point -- not in Phoenix, anyway. (You could make a case in a market with serious sprawl like L.A. or Dallas, where people are still regularly commuting after 8p, but not here.) And I really don't think anyone but KTAR brass is stupid enough to run radio Beck in competition with TV Beck.

My guess is that the lineup stays mostly the same after the move. (Maybe someone else slots in for Savage, whose spittle-inflected act almost certainly won't carry over to FM. John Gibson, perhaps?) If Beck comes over -- and, not knowing the contractual relationship CC has with TMISLC w/r/t how long his show is exclusive to KTAR and what can be done to change that, that's going to remain an enormous "if" -- he almost certainly slides into PM drive.

And since they've done whatever they've done to process down his whiny, nasal speaking voice. This spring, I'd thought he'd been taking lessons or something; imagine my surprise at the Tempe event to find he sounds just like he always did once he's away from the station.

...you're conveniently leaving out KFNX. And as far as KPHX, considering the gross mismanagement conducted there by the clueless John Manzo and the backstabbing liars Jeff Farias and Sean Ryan when I was there on Sunday mornings, even if it was two years ago, I doubt that they'll ever have a strong presence in Phoenix. Talk radio that merely replaces honest discussion about social issues with rants about who to hate on the November ballot is not entertainment, and as such will always suck in the ratings regardless of where it is (do the call signs KGO and WGN ring any bells here?)...

If Heywood still lives in the Biltmore 'hood, he can save the parking fee and hoof it on over to the Mansion ::) But then again, Old Bill never showed at the Smackdowns.

Whoa! You're saying that the gum magnate charges to park at mansion events?

Is that self or valet?

And do we at least get a free pack of Juicy Fruit? ;D

Dunno....but if you promise not to tell Nurse Jeff, I kinda like those Doublemint twins!

Radio coverage of the event is TERRIBLE! Bad sound, Broomhead ranting about immigration (yeah, that's new), Leykis (ewww) and then JD the oaf screaming and yelling for over a half hour.

How freaking boring.

Its the 25th anniversary, put interesting people on the radio! We don't need a 30 minute JD commercial. Broomhead has a mancrush on JD, and it makes boring radio.

Bad sound throughout the whole event. Knew I'd regret choosing to work on a bunch of stuff instead of attending this, though...

Are you serious? Leykis was there? Did Broomhead talk to him on-air? "Do you care?"

Leykis sounded like he gargled with razor blades.

After JD's free commercial from his boyfriend, we get:

Jan D'Atri???????

She is nice, but christ, what do you talk about? Making a doily or biscotti?

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Wow, pure radio suckage.

From what's been posted so far in describing the event on air, you'd think they
trashed the place, J.D. Windbag swung from the chandeliers, the early arrivals
swiped all the free Doublemint and Juicy Fruit samples, uninvited party-crasher
"D-Day" drove his motorcycle up the hallowed staircase, and KFYI was told to
never set foot in the mansion again! ;)

But from the 100+ photos already posted on the 55/FYI website, it seems the
crowd was curious...but well-behaved:

(scroll down to "newest KFYI galleries" then "KFYI turns 25")

I enjoyed Herb Kalish (sp) and Mark Jeffries ( I had forgotten about the helicopter accident). I didn't expect to like hearing Leykis but he was well behaved and low key, and he related a lot of things I hadn't known that were kinda fun- he was the original PD and hired Mohan and Barry Young from a station they had all worked together at in Florida( I knew they'd come from FLA but I didn't know Leykis had a hand in it). Evan Mecham(!) was a regular KFYI caller before he was a politician. Leykis' intent from day one was to offset KT'R's toaster talk approach-he sure accomplished that. Would have liked to hear a mention of Gabe-maybe I missed it.

Leykis looked terrible, more than usual, combover boy!

But, when he was at KFYI he was good, when he became "blow me up Tom" in syndication he was just terrible.

Leykis has always had a face made for radio...but in the day he at least had more turf up top!

What made him so good on KFWhyEye 9~Ten is he shook things up.. including making fun of political conservatives. And controversy followed him everywhere: his stamp out Jerry Lewis telethons were offensive as all get out, but perversely funny as well. In spite of all the great acts heard on KFWhyEye, the station never came close to KT'R until putting El Rushbo on the air. After that, everything changed and the move to 5~Fifty gave them the signal to beat 6~Twenty.
