But will Raul, Mohan, Dr Science & Leykis Show?

Leykis sounded like he gargled with razor blades.

Just listened to the podcast...

Great interview with Leykis on the history of KFYI and his time here! Really, his voice is sounding better than it did during the final days of our Free-FM.

I didn't get an opportunity to weigh in right after it happened, but figured I would now...

The broadcast itself was absolutely disgraceful. Did the KFYI engineering department actually test the ISDN line prior to going on the air? I've heard internet broadcasts at low bitrates from Israel that sounded better. The stuttering and audio drops alone were bad enough, but technical issues aside it's all about the content and this little party on the radio didn't have it.

Apparently the most interesting part of the shindig actually took place at the event and NOT on the air and that's a shame considering that the overwhelming majority of people were NOT at the event, so why not get more of the people (former hosts, etc) from KFYI's past on the air for this event? While it was alright to have Herb Kalish on, he was there for over a half hour talking immigration--and while I believe it's an important issue, there are 364 other days of the year to beat that dead horse... come on! Tom Leykis was actually REFRESHING, because he actually talked about radio and more specifically KFYI... Broomhead asking him how he got into radio was silly... it's called wikipedia, use it! Otherwise, even though I'm not a big fan of the post-KFYI Tom Leykis, he was actualy useful... though he did sound awful... how a man in his early-mid 50s has a voice in that kind of shape is a mystery.

Jan D'Atri was a yawnfest at best... she's still on the station and, at the risk of being a tad snarky here, she's not exactly a critical piece of KFYI's past, present or future.

I wasn't at the event, but I sure hope more than just Jan D'Atri, Tom Leykis and Herb Kalish showed up to represent KFYI (not counting the current staff that was there). As I understand it, Bob Mohan declined as did Jamie McFerrin.

KFYI could have put down the politics for a few hours and given the listeners something better than what was presented... overall, I'd give it a good solid "F+" ... and actually were it not for Tom Leykis, I'd say it would have been a pitiful "F-".

Thanks for the inside info on Mohan, I had wondered if he had declined or if he was unable to make it. Seems like there was as much controversy going on with the hosts and management as their was on air with the topics. I remember that Mohan and chickboss had no love lost between them. I remember John Dayle getting in all kinds of trouble on several different occasions and I remember Duke referring to Barry as "the man who would be tall". I heard snide remarks from the hosts about Bill Heywood and Mary Ann Watkins, and I remember how unbelievably fast and unexpectedly Bill and Heidi were dumped. Then there was Charles Goyette, Liddy and Hill (who left on their own, but still maybe there were some hard feelings) and Bruce Jacobs, and the firing that broke MY heart, Joe Crummey. I think KFYI ticked off a lot of people over the years (and vice versa) and a lot of them didn't want to participate. I was hoping for a better show. I think I liked Kalish just because he was from the early days. I enjoyed seeing John Giese in the photos-either I missed him or he wasn't interviewed, and I especiallly enjoyed Leykis. I don't thinl Earl Baldwin was mentioned either, what the heck? ???

So we know Mohan didn't show...Leykis did. But what about Raul & Dr Science? The Nurse and I can understand why Raul would lay low...but wassup with the good Doc? Seems no one has seen or heard him since the move from 9~Ten.

Earl Baldwin passed away a few years ago.

Ya know, they could have at least done 5 minutes with clips to remember Earl Baldwin, Duke Shirlaw and John Dayl and the guy who used to sing. But that is what you would expect on a 25th anniversary special. Instead, we got the usual terrible Broomhead show, ranting about 1070, JD making a fool of himself, and Jan D'Atri. All in craptastic sound! Really an embarrassing 3 hours, KFYI should have a do-over and put together a taped retrospective of the last 25 years.

I am glad Mohan didn't go, KFYI treated him like dirt near the end, moving his show around, giving him a paltry 1 hour show and essentially throwing him out. His "replacements" have all been failures, Goyette, Jacobs, Grant Woods, JD, Broomhead.

Goyette would have been there, but he spotted some chemtrails and a black helicopter that day and had to retreat to his bunker made of tinfoil.

Wasn't that Jack Cole?

Back at the dump on First Avenue, there was a neatly typewritten letter on the wall addressed to Jack Cole.

Dear Mr. Cole,

(eff) you!

Sincerely,
(signature of listener)

As the Nurse and I recall, Mohan was pretty much out to pasture when KFWhyEye moved to 5~Fifty. He followed Heidi and Sharpe for two hours, then that was cut to one (most likely due to a contract which said he had to be on the air). When he finally left, the Nearly Bald One came back to KFWhyEye and the rest is history.

In spite of all the complaints about the people who weren't there and the technical issues, listeners are passionate about this station. Same can't be said for KT'R.

Yeah, but the other day, my garbage disposal wasn't working, I was hoping for Prezzton to do an hour long segment about it.

I checked the KFYI site and saw the gazillion pics there. Lots of Gov. Brewer and--gasp--JD Windbag with mucho campaign paraphernalia. Guess there's no hard feelings there. Many pictures of listeners with a standup of Saint Ron. Looks like a snoozer of a party.

I miss Mohan and the late Dayl. I listened to that station just for the personality they brought to the table, though they kept veering to the right wing nut-job side. Now, fuhgeddaboudit. Rush and Sean are no substitute for local talent, conservative or otherwise--Jacobs was a crappy substitute.

Hey, at least Leykis was there, fatter than ever! ;D

The station is 100x more successful now than it was in it's early years (1985-1990). The people that complain about the station would run it the same way as it is now as it is (mostly) a winning formula. All of that having been said, back in the 80s, KFYI was different and it was just what Phoenix needed. When Tom Leykis was the program director (and he made a point of this at the anniversary party) he brought on different voices from different perspectives so that the same topics would be fresh and interesting throughout the entire day. Radio isn't done that way anymore for the most part; Liberals want to hear Liberal talking points all day, Conservatives want to hear their beloved Rush/Sean/etc. (of course the haters of each respective side want to hear their opposing views all day as well).

In any event, listeners are much more familiar with KFYI because of it's initial unique style of radio... not that talk radio was unique, but the multitude of personalities certainly were. I always compare KFYI's success now with the underground rock band that a few people loved and rooted for back when they were playing dive-clubs/bars but as soon as they caught on and became successful, those same fans now hated them simply because they were popular and viewed as "selling out". Simply put, radio has changed just as much in 25 years as KFYI has.

So I guess Leykis, Mohan, John Dayl, Jack Cole and company were the Metallica of local radio. ;D

Leykis - Metallica
Mohan - Merle Haggard
John Dayl - Lawerence Welk
Jack Cole - Liberace (sans the rhinestones)

The Nearly Bald One = Keith Richards

;D ;D Happy Birthday KFWhyEye from your friends at the Buckeye Media Hut! ;D ;D
