It looks like it's finally happening, WJSE will no longer rock come 4/1/08. Rumor is either country or spanish top 40. Mancow put the nail in the coffin!

Wow, a FIRST time poster has something to say about a 'rumor.'

And as far as "bye bye Modern Rock in South Jersey"...might I remind you about a little station on the 106.5 frequency?

Not that I know anything about that station or something.... ;D

Bye Bye Modern Rock in South Jersey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Modern/Alternative Rock left South Jersey when WJSE "Digital 102.7" was sold to Access.1 and became "Your Rock" which would later become "The Ace"....That was when they started to throw in the Active Rock artists....Still nothing was better then years back when the market had both WJSE & WDOX which at the time were the best 2 Alternative Rock stations around.

And as far as "bye bye Modern Rock in South Jersey"...might I remind you about a little station on the 106.5 frequency?

Now I will say "G-Rock" is the best alternative rock station around and is as good as the old WJSE but it's still not as good as the old WDOX.....The problem is that 106.5 WBBO does not cover the whole market. When I went to AC I listened to "G-Rock" on 106.3 & 106.5 from The Oranges all the way down.....However, heading east on the Atlantic City Expressway I lost 106.5 and it never really came back......In fact 106.5 was pretty weak throughout all of AC.....I think a lot of it has to do with all the close FM transmitters that blocks 106.5 from coming in since I have got 106.5 quite clearly to Exit 25 (Ocean City).......After that it dies quickly and the bleed from 106.7 WSJQ starts.......It's too bad Press can't pickup 106.7 so it can cover all of the Jersey Shore.....They can call it "G-Rock 106-3-5 & 7".

i get 106.5 pretty good at my house in levittown pa. that and 105.7 the hawk. g rock sounds a lot like Radio 1045. however, i have only ever heard of the ace. i have never even caught this one on tropo like i have WZXL over powering semi-local WLEV.

Safe money says that this thread is nothing but a hoax. Country or Spanish Top 40 ... OK, we've got one mid-performer loud and clear for the former and a similar format that bombed on 104.9 a few years ago for the latter. You may want to come up with format choices that actually make sense before you spread a rumor like this.

WJSE was quite good in the Digital 102.7 days. It seemed to be the top station when it came to new titles (they actually played anywhere from 60-80 Currents) - its downside was on the retro titles, an area where then-competitor WDOX really excelled - and they were no slouches in the new music department either. When Access1 bought WJSE, they basically morphed into an Active/Alternative hybrid. They still played a lot of new music, but they also started playing harder Active Rock tracks and stuff like AC/DC and Metallica. Only recently did they become full-fledged Active Rock. They don't play The Killers or Taking Back Sunday anymore, and seem to play a bit more Classic Rock. They're more focused sounding these days, but Access1 needs to do more to make the station stand out from sister station The Shark - ditching the Aerosmith and Guns N' Roses would help them out a lot in this regard. Perhaps bringing back Scotty & Alex to replace Mancow would also help.

G Rock doesn't put a strong signal into the Atlantic City area. They pretty much fade out once you hit city limits. But they did rank in the AC/Cape May Arbs for the first time in the last book, so the station is benefiting from having its signal audible in parts of Burlington and Atlantic Counties. I second Press picking up WSJQ (home to an awful CHR) and expanding its presence in the market, turning G Rock into a "trimulcast". And G Rock destroys Radio 104.5. Much broader playlist, more new titles, more surprises, a good balance between jock banter and music, and much more listener-friendly with the request shows. And they also don't play 3 Doors Down and All American Rejects, which also deserves points.

You notice the demise of JSE wasnt so much when access.1 bought the station, it was when their air staff began to leave.

6-10 - Stern
10 -3 Jason Ulanet
3-7 - Gill
7-10 - DC

They knew the music and it sounded like they were having fun with it. The air staff now doesnt know or like the music and it is evident. Ulanet was a fine MD and when the staff began to part ways the station went downhill.

Jason Ulanet was great on the air but I believe he left in 2003, and I just googled ratings for Digital 102.7 and the best book was a year later in the fall 2004 with a 5.2 and they beat both rock stations. I think Gill and DC had left way before Jason did. It's ashame I talked to a few people and Jason got screwed on 102.7, that was really his baby. But last I heard he's onto bigger and better things somewhere out west.

I really hope that it's just a rumor about 4/1, I think the station can make a comeback and beat up on wzxl.

IIRC, Mike Gill left to do sports talk and DC was "relieved of her duties" following a prank call to a competitor's then-pregnant wife. Yes, that was the power line-up that made up the heydays of WJSE as Digital 102.7. In fact, didn't they beat ZXL in the ratings during that time? It was a great station with loads of talent....

Comparing "The ACE" to Digital 102.7 is like comparing the Atlantic City market to Philadelphia. They're 2 different animals. I used to listen to JSE when they simulcasted WIP in the '90s. I remember when the first went modern rock. I was thrilled b/c I used to listen to DRE when I worked near Philly. The early JSE lineup featured "The Mistress of the Morning" and Dana Dana (the girl so nice they named her twice).

For me personally, the best time for JSE (as Digital 102.7) featured Blake Laurelli (PD), Alli Morgan, the "Rock-tacular" Jaybird, Lydia Monroe and Andi Glaze. It was a family there and everyone was passionate about the music (except for Lydia who was passionate about being a star). The story ended when they wrangled the deal to bring in Stern and began letting people go. I do think Jason Ulanet was a good MD. I think his best times there were not w/Gill and DC. I thought the station sounded best when Brother Noah (better newsreader than jock) handled middays and Roche (arguably the best talent from the AC market) rode afternoon drive. I'll give props to Michelle & Michele (they tried) and I was even a fan of Captain Kev. And forget about post-Stern. Scotty and Alex were drek. They are the sinlge most no-talent radio team in Atlantic City or any other market. And before anyone goes ranting about how the "made it" to YSP, do you honestly think the guy that brokered the Stern deal for JSE had nothing to do w/that?

As for DOX, Knutzen had something there. At the time no one realized the power of the 5-second spot (Beepers Cheaper). The station was never the same after Coastal mangled it. But this is about the possible "demise" of JSE. If it's a 4/1 prank, so what. If it's real, so what again. The AC market is pretty weak anyway. Will anyone really care? But w/DeSisto coming to town recently, I think it's just a lame stunt.

And that's my opinion.

Don't forget Mike Gill served time in Cape May (at CZT and DOX) before signing on for sports talk. DC was not a professional as she proved w/that prank call.

That is the most insane post I have ever read, only a deaf person would think the people you listed had any talent....Dana Dana...Ha Ha

There's only one true statement you made

"Roche (arguably the best talent from the AC market) rode afternoon drive"

For those not quite so chronologically challenged, Vertical Horizon didn't really break until 1999....

I'm not here to argue friend. Apparently you read my post and took from it what you wanted. Truth is the jocks at JSE weren't the most talented. I never claimed they were (and that was the genius of DOX, great music/no jocks). I merely stated that, in my opinion, WJSE was better pre-Stern. When I consider the Stern era, I think Jason Ulanet worked better w/Roche. Is it coincidence that they're both on the air in markets 30 and 10 respectively? And how are things going for The Scotty & Alex Show these days?

As for living in 1995 (or 1999) I'm no different than those who enjoy a Classic Hits or Classic Rock format. For me radio's always been about particular times in my life and how music from those times resonates w/me. Beides, I thought this space was designed to discuss radio, not to criticize people's personal taste.

It comes down to this. Some people are open-minded and respect others. Then there are the are small-minded. You know them. Theirs is the only opinion that matters and they're intolerant toward everyone else. Know what I call them? South NJ for Life.

Wow....

Talk about not having respect

My Opinion is that early era of WJSE was very local yocal small market sounding, hope you respect that.

If you took time to read my post I had nothing but great things to say about Jason Ulanet and Roche. It just seems you may have been to busy spewing insults to read them.

Scotty and Alex were not my cup of tea but I do respect the fact that they got out of the Atlantic City Market. That's just my opinion in my small minded world.

I also apologize for not knowing the exact dates of the most influential band of the late nineties...Vertical Horizon

Just to set the record straight - there were a couple of us that were behind DOX, and
Chuck Knutson wasn't one of the inventors. Don Powers (R.I.P.) put WDOX on the air,
and was also the owner of WSKR (now WJSE) after running elevator music on cassette
for a couple of months, he was talked into running "Modern Rock" for the summer by
a guy named Chris Fraley. I then talked Don into keeping the format, and converting
it to a digital automation system. At that point, I think it was July of 1994, Frank Lario,
John Kerr and I dubbed every song we could get out hands on into the system.
Much of the music was borrowed from WMID-FM 99.3, where I was program director and
Frank was music director and John did afternoons. I created about 200 of the famous
DOX liners from the single "D O X" voice track, and pre-Internet sound clips downloaded
from bulletin boards. (My idea)

From that point, and until about a year after Don Brooks of WTTH bought the station,
Frank and I programmed it. We dubbed the music on DAT tapes at WMID-FM, I
generated the music logs on Auto-Jock, and made a weekly trip to the transmitter
site or studio later, to dub the music in and put the logs in from a floppy disk.

The original plan was to simulcast on 102.7 and cover the whole Southern Coast,
but Don Powers was forced to sell WSKR to Jim Quinn, who later sold it to
Al Parinello.

Not that anyone cares, but WDOX is named after the original holder of the
construction permit, a Washington FCC attorney named David OXenford.
WDOX did better than WJSE in the ratings many times while still on 93.1.
The reincarnation on 106.7 wasn't very successful. I generated the
music logs at my house through the Coastal purchase, until it became WSJQ.
My voice was on the top of the hour ID on both 93.1 and 106.7 ...

... tom

Tom, that is the one thing that has been lost in this thread, that being DOX was in a league all its own. Too bad the 102.7 deal never came through, or I think DOX would probably still be on air. I have a lot of respect for Coastal, but that lowered a bit after they murdered DOX for Q107. We can all agree that JSE's better days are long behind them.

What did everyone think of the "Shore", now that was a great modern adult rock automated format when they slid over to 106.3, was their reign in the late 90's early 00's. Remember sooner or later everyone comes to the shore great liner.....

I thought "Shore 106" was a decent station, and wasn't given enough time. But I also thing the WFPG operators were concerned, rightfully so, that it was canibalizing Lite 96.9 younger demos. It really needed a bigger signal. I think 98.7 in Villas would give WiFPiG a run if they had more horsepower. But isn't SOJO 104.9 kinda like Shore turned sideways?

Yes you can sort of say 104.9 is the modern day 106.3.....In March 2002 106.3 WKOE "The Shore" moved to 97.3 as WIXM "Mix" but more as a Hot-AC then Modern AC....In November 2004 the "Mix" Hot-AC format moved to 104.9 as WSJO "SoJo".
