Bye Bye 102.7 The Ace in South Jersey

I think 98.7 in Villas would give WiFPiG a run if they had more horsepower.

Surely, amfmsw, you must be kidding ("Dont call me Shirley!")...

They need more than horsepower. 98.7 has a misdirected playlist and misdirected management. They're the station that used to play Neil Diamond's "Headed for the 80s" on Forgotten Oldie Friday. (Huh?)

IMOHO, their only true strength is their local news coverage- and even that is suffering these days. Kinda hard to be a "local station" when the only live shifts during the week are the drive time spots.

I haven't heard that Neil Diamond song since I played it 20 some years ago! That IS a forgotten 45 (and forgettable!) The intro sounded like a tenant banging on the pipes for more heat from the landlord. I guess you're right...I always plug for the independents.

Oops! ::)

Actually, the Neil Diamond song was called "Headed for the Future"... I guess I was in my Village People cowboy chaps and was thinking "Ready for the 80s" when I wrote that one. My bad...

Anyway, I'm all for the independents, too- when things are done right and without a holier-than-thou attitude. Unfortunately, Coastal comes up short on both counts.

In retrospect, a real forgotten oldie from Mr. D could be something like Neil's original "Red, Red Wine" (although I'm not sure if that version was ever released as a single)

I'm a new listener to WJSE, so I don't have the frame of reference that some of you do, but I don't think it's a bad sounding station. I liked DOX and Tom's format at WMID/fm deserved a major market home. BTW Tom, I enjoyed the radio tour on your website...By this time, I'd imagine many of the transmitters pictured have been replaced by now. It would be great to have some new pics.

Let me echo those sentiments. Tom, time to "blow the dust and the cobwebs" of those tours and bring them into 2008, and perhaps add some newer pics (especially the air studios). I mean it with all the due respect you garner/earned being in the trenches with us radio geeks. It is truly a great site, but would love to see some newer material. I hope you get the time to do so.

Hah - yeah they are almost 10 years old. There have been a few changes.
I want to keep and date the old ones at the same time.

If the format is going to go away, with summer coming, couldn't they go into some sort of agreement with GM to simulcast Preston & Steve or all of WMMR? Would P&S work down the shore? A "local" show that people of S. Jersey can relate to. It could be like when WNEW had a station on Long Island.

No. Wouldn't make sense at all. As it is, WMMR is a basically 75% Classic Rock / 25% newer rock, so they would risk cannibalizing WMGM's ratings with more of the same.

A number of factors are playing into The Ace's weak ratings. The signal sucks, the airstaff doesn't engage the listener as much as it should, there's no promotional presence, and the mix is not what it could be. Now they're playing Aerosmith, Van Halen, and other dyed-in-the-wool wheelchair rockers that just don't mix well with a lot of the harder rock acts that WJSE plays. There's already plenty of stations that reach the market that play Aerosmith and Van Halen - they should focus on the acts that you can't hear anywhere else.

If Access1 can improve in the aforementioned areas (well, the factors that are within their control at least - nothing they can do about that signal), I don't see why they can at least routinely pull 3's in their market.

Let me offer a suggestion, sort of play "Armchair PD":

1) High-profile morning show. Obviously, not Mancow. And yes, I do realise Hoo Hoo is gone to the little doggy company. A regional network for Preston and Steve MIGHT work. Otherwise, hmmmmmmmm...

2) "Pull no punches" evening show. Music-intensive, but just a "smart@$$" jock who doesn't ake him/herself too seriously.

3) Middays: A hip chick who kepps the music moving. No liner card reader, but you don't her to take the focus away from the music.

4) Afternoon drive: the approach should be "Hey friends, we madeit through another workday. Time to go home with the best rock around, and I'll meet you at the bar". Again, friendly (but not overbearing) approach.

5) Nights and weekends: a full street blitz. Let the audience see the station vehicle everywhere.

6) Music: Sure, you need to bang the familiar stuff, but don't be afraid of the "Oh Wow" factor.

Either that, or just give up the ghost and become a younger WOND on FM.

The Ace 102.7 is alive and well. They've moved to Active Rock, dumped Mancow for "Moon" with music, brought back Scott Riley from WYSP for PM Drive, and are wrapping up a Grunge Weekend. They're streaming at www.WJSE.net

I have to agree. Heard them over the past couple of weeks and they sound tighter and more focused. Love the way they appraoch the active format. Sounds like they love what they're doing, a key to any good rock station.
