Bye bye Indie. It was nice knowing you.

There is a pretty strong rumor that either tonight at midnight or some time during the day tomorrow Indie will become "El Gato" with a rhythmic and cumbia flavor of regional Mexican music done in the Jack manner with no announcers and liners with attitude.

Indie likely will continue as a streaming station.

Too bad they couldn't simulcast Indie 103.1 on the HD2 signals of sister station 97.5 and 107.1. Perhaps if enough people express interest - that could happen.

I'd hate to see the station go - but Internet Radio is slowly working its way into the car so the Internet stream is better than nothing.

This would definitely be a shame if it happens. Indie is about the only commercial over-the-air music station I can tolerate listening to anymore...and I’m talking in ‘worldwide terms’ since I’m listening online all the way from the UK! At the moment, they’re still rocking and TK has just started the morning show in upbeat style.

Assuming the rumor is true...

An HD2 signal for Indie might actually accomplish a couple of of useful things. One is to increase their reach to someplace outside of south Orange County and Santa Monica. Two would be to maybe get soem people to really go out and buy an HD radio :)

But given their limited coverage (except maybe for Santa Ana) how would a Spanish language station work on that combination unless, say 97.5 was thrown into the mix.

This is a real shame if it turns out to be true.

Indie is the most interesting L.A. radio station since Rick Carroll was programming KROQ.

They seem to be saying goodbye right now, in between songs.

It's true. They are gone, moved from FM to the Internet. They are just wrapping up now.

It is true  i just saw where on there website it says bye bye and thanks to everyone who made indie 1031 possible i have to post this again

Then tell me how a station like www.cd101.com in columbus ohio which has had a similar format to indie for years and years stays on the air???

There are stations here and there aroud the country like it but there not indie i am sad!!!

Interesting musical selections in the "goodbye" sign-off: "My Way" by Frank Sinatra; "Desperado" by Johnny Cash. It's funny how a station can sometimes sound its best when signing off - depends on the creativity of the staff & just being allowed to say "goodbye" in the first place.

On the www.indie1031.fm/index.php website, there's a brief message confirming "the end":

"BYE BYE

Thanks to everyone who made Indie 103.1 possible. We love you all."

When refreshing the main web page for www.indie1031.fm/index.php, a "Join the Indie revolution" page appears (http://www.indie1031.fm/) with a countdown clock set to expire on Friday morning, February 14, 2009 at 12 midnight. A logo with "Indie Online" surrounded by "Music Activism" & "digitalindie.com" appears as well with links to the old website & streaming audio player, indicating (as David E. mentioned in his post) that the station will apparently continue in "online mode".

Being in the NYC area right now, I can't say what's going out over the air: if it continues to match the music being played on the Indie1031 website or if the format change has occurred.

MODIFIED: Over-the-air & webstream audio are separate formats.

Notice posted on Indie1031 Website:

"Bye Indie hello Indie
This is an important message for the Indie 103.1 Radio Audience -

Indie 103.1 will cease broadcasting over this frequency effective immediately. Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 - which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world."

Sorry to see Indie go. Nothing else in LA is as unique in the genre.

The very last song they should play should be The Propellerheads w/Shirley Bassey- "History Repeating" since it would be at the 103.1 FM frequency going to the Internet-only.

D.E., any reason to belive they'll do better as a Spanish language station this time than they did last time?

I bet indie does better as an internet only station then world class rock did a little over 8 years ago when they said goodbye in sept of 2000 but history repeats itself again similar format with what they replaced world class rock with so we shall see.

I wish someone with deep pockets would have come in and bought indie just like the dude that owns cd 101 in columbus ohio some dude that is very wealthy owns the station and has for some time and refuses to sell out to the coporate world which he has had numerous offers.

R.I.P. Indie 103.1...a truely innovative, cutting edge, amazing radio station! Just pushed the envelope in an era of radio lacking soul, dominated by corporate cookie cutter conglomerate stations. You may have been going against the grain, but we supported you 110% for the ride! You will be sorely missed!

Last time they were a simulcast of Superestrella, so it's hard to measure their effectiveness then... now they will be an independent format...

Just a correction, it was September 2000, not 2001.

That reminds me of WOXY.com. Ever listen to them? They went off the air but continued their webcasts... Then they were signing off Sept 15, 2006 but were resurrected a few weeks later by another dude with deep pockets. They're still on today.

It was a great station to compliment kroq and 98.7

Then why was it 45th with an average of 4,500 persons listening at any time?

I'm hoping he meant when a listener got burned out on KROQ or 98.7, they had an option to hear what Indie was playing.

And you know that its a totally niche format for niche fans. Large numbers don't necessarily mean good programming IN MY minority OPINION.

The Sound should be aggressively marketing to get these disenfranchised 103.1 listeners.

I know, marketing costs money, but this is a rare opportunity for them.
