Welcome to rock radio, where have you been?. Rock radio stations rarely pander to the intellectual elite in fact all radio stations to some degree or other target the lowest common denominator, it has always been the case. Classic Rock stations may not deliver as much of a "sound cool" image/on air attitude because they are targeting men 25-54 who essentially are family men etc. So while your over thought idea of what constitutes good radio may hold some water in your own universe, I contend that rock radio which has always targeted men, and younger men for the most part, has also always been about what you term "the lowest common denominator". So while I am a college graduate, who owns two homes, and while well read, and have a fairly high IQ, the average listener is not tuning into rock radio for much more than escapist release and the delivery is an obvious part of that. Just as certain stations trying to attract say a female audience play certain types of artists and certain songs that are geared toward women, many rock radio stations offer a certain delivery which much like playing certain artists is a way of attracting a certain moostly male audience. Say what you will about what you do or do not liek about KRock but that is the plight of rock radio overall. Im sure some will disagree and arggue the points for stations that they deem more intelligent rock radio but taste is of course completely subjective so that point isnt worth arguing either. It's also always easy to monday morning quarterback but that doesnt change history either.

Yes, and how's rock radio doing exactly? Maybe if that *wasn't* the plight, K-ROCK would still be around after January.

You're right. What very few people like to acknowledge is that the male audience has really embraced hip hop big time. They used to be persons 18-34 stations exclusively but within the last five years if you look at most major markets the hip hop stations are killing (as in doing very well) in the MALE 18-34 demo. Hip hop is to men what rock was twenty plus years ago and although people dont like hearing it the hip hoppers are the new rock stars. Personally I love both and I understand why they are both very popular musical forms but I also understand why rock radio has been steadily in deline over the past few years. The music has been less than stellar from an A & R perspective, not a lot of bands with staying power or even really solid songs until this past summer when there were a lot of superstar artists with big records many of which have been co-opted by CHR and I have to admit Weezer and the Killers sound great on Z100 and the Kiss 108's of the world.

Re: K Rock, Mix?

Oh, I doubt that if WNEW ( Mix) goes rock on that same January morning that K-Rock goes Free-FM talk, that it would be confusing to anyone, especially those of us over the age of 40 who are in an atractive demo. and remember WNEW-FM just a few short years ago.
It would be a smart thing for Infinity to do.
They could advertise on the sides of busses " What's old will be " New" again"
a couple of weeks before the switch, and then simply put K-rock's format on 102.7.
Far fetched? stupid? Neither

The difference is news/talk actually get's the 35+ audience. Hot Talk might target men 18-44 but often doesn't get them. Most young men aren't interested in "talk about nothing".

I'am glad to hear I wasn't completely insane when I had the though. :)

It sucks that NYC is denied a rock outlet. I live in the suburbs of New York (Newark NJ) and I can pick up other alternative rock stations (WDHA, WHTG, etc)

I am going to miss K-rock.....I don't live in NYC, but some friends make tapes for me as live in Toronto and I love K-rock.......I hope NYC gets another rock station as there will be a hole to fill.
