Bye Vikki...and Steve

From the article:

For about three weeks after Steve & Vikki leave November 2, the station will air “best of” bits from the 17 years the pair have been on. Kanov said he’s not sure what the station will do per se between Thanksgiving and New Year’s...

Translation: They'll probably go all-Christmas.

Mr. Kanov's comments make it sound like Cindy & Ray will remain the afternoon show. Am I the only one who thinks the team idea is not the right one for PM drive on a CHR, and that it changes the station's pace too much? (Yes, I realize Star is not a true CHR like Q100.)

The show improved ratings initially because it was something new. But aren't the numbers lower now than before C&R? I'd go with music and a strong personality in afternoon drive, but I guess that's why Dan Bowen is the PD, and I'm just an onlooker.

I am not sure about the ratings but if the revenue is way up that is all that is going to matter to them.

Wouldn't it be nice to have Imus on in the mornings on a good fm signal. I see he is about to sign a new deal. I don't see Star spending big bucks on a new morning show. Those days are over.

I think this comment by Kanov is very interesting:

“Stations aren’t willing to grow and develop talent in these middle markets.”

Another fine product of voicetracking.

"34 years, 94.1 has had just two morning shows"
What about Mercer and Mc whatever the other ones name was?

McCoy/Locke and McKee are two of the best shows ever in this market maybe on the planet.
Like them or not they have TALENT.

LOL, Jack Murphy and Terrence McKeever, the five-month morning disaster on "The New Star 94," November 1989 to April 1990. They started their first morning by playing the old 94Q jingles and pretending to break the tapes, snickering "That's the last time you'll hear that." Some woman called in and mentioned McKee and one of the apes called her a b----. Classy stuff. Truthfully, that whole station was a train wreck at that point, between those two morons in AM drive and Jazz Flavours coming back. I can't decide which show did more damage. It's no wonder they reigned as the lowest-rated city-grade FM signal for a couple of years.

Yep. And McCoy and Locke are also two of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

You are right now that 94.9 Lite is no more that means that Star will do All Christmas through the season, Youll see thats whats going to happen.

Now what will their on-air moniker be: Star Of Bethlehem 94?

Wow...that means I might listen to Star 94 for the first time in years. Star 94 isn't a bad station...I just can't stand the music.

Has any CHR gone all-Christmas before? That's been an AC thing. I guess it would get attention.

I'm sure they are nice people, but I don't think I ever listened to them for more than a few minutes (most likely in a dentist's office) in the 18 years I've lived here.

Usually on Christmas eve and Christmas Day Star 94 has Always Done all Christmas and I think Q1OO has done the same During Past Years.

Almost every station does that, even WSB-AM. That's not what I mean by going all Christmas. I can't think of any CHR that's gone all-Christmas for several weeks. Doing that has generated some awesome ratings for AC stations. But is enough good CHR Christmas product available to keep a CHR sounding like a CHR for that long?

First off, congrats to S&V for a remarkable run. 17 years is definitely something to be proud of. I wouldn't be surprised if we heard Steve and/or Vikki on The River or something down the road if they wanted to pursue that.

That being said, I'm really interested to see what Mark Kanov and Dan Bowen have up their sleeves. The way I see it, they have two options. One is to skew younger and try to take a bite out of The Bert Show. There's no questioning that that's what holds Q together, and Star may continue the trend of trying to appeal to a hipper audience and shed the "soccer mom" image. However, there's the question of how loyal Bert's audience is. Will they be interested in checking out a new show on Star 94? If not, is the new show going to appeal to the S&V audience; and if not, what audience will be left? In short, if they do try that route, it will take a LOT of talent, marketing, and time for the show to work. However, if done properly it could put a major hurt on Q100.

The other route is, obviously, to go with a S&V-esque morning show. It's probably a safer bet, but is it the smarter one in the long run?

And how crazy would it be if Star lured Bert over? It'd be the nail in Q100's coffin, that's for sure...

Thoughts?

Bert recently signed a long-term contract with Q so I'm guessing he'll stay there. Star has got to go for a morning show attracting the same demos as the rest of the station, which is the Steve & Vikki Show demo, women 25-49. That's a lucrative demo that has served Star well. No reason to move away from that.
