Bye Vikki...and Steve

Do Dan Bowen and Don Benson have the will and ability to find or build a show that's different and compelling enough to make anyone want to sample them for any length of time? Or are they doing what's standard practice...scouring the country for a couple of chuckleheads who are a) available, b) cheap, and c) willing to be heavily consultant-controlled?

Management there hasn't built a reputation of thinking outside any boxes, and bringing in "just another morning show" isn't going to make anything significant happen. And if you can't or aren't willing to make anything significant happen, why not just pipe in Kidd Kraddick's show, or ask Ryan Seacrest if they can run his show from the previous day?

Star's ability and willingness to truly innovate is really questionable. But my real question is, what are Q and B98 doing to get ready to capitalize on this very rare opportunity to finish Star off?
 
This may be the grease that gets Cumulus off their ass and Q100 on 99.7. I can't think of a more vulnerable time for any radio station than when their morning show is changing. Why not go for the jugular?

I think it would be virtual suicide for Star 94 to play all-Christmas (even if it was all-CHR Christmas) and send everyone who wants current hits down to Q100, regardless of Q's dial position.
 
How about bringing Randy & Spiff back to the FM dial and put them on Star 94. Their show hasn't been the same since going to 640 WGST. They can't be funny and do phone topics on WGST but on Star they could go back to hwat they used to do, make people laugh.
 
One other thing I want to know is how will the station do its usual Radio-a-thon wiht both Steve and Vikki and Cindy and Ray? So you think they would bring Setev and Vikki to help out wiht it and what will the date for it be?
 
December is the month in which Star 94 runs its Wish-Upon-A-Star promotion. So the station might do something like bring in celebrity hosts to do the morning show while Wish is running. There's no way I see Star going all-Christmas music.
 
It doesn't matter one bit that they are up for sale. If anyone does come along to buy them, I'm sure they won't be trying to change much. They are, after all, a $25 million biller.
 
It's not Star itself that's for sale. Lincoln Financial announced months ago it's exploring options to sell its stations. I haven't heard much since then.
 
Two fine people ending an extraordinary run! Most of us can only dream about lasting long enough at a station to become a bonafide institution, as they are.

Of course, we'll be happy to take S&V's audience in from the cold over here at Q. ;-)

I will miss Steve McCoy, remember listening to him in 1980/81 when I was in Kindergarten when he did morning drive on Z-93 (replaced Ross and Wilson IIRC). He is extraordinarily talented and seeing him and his sidekick go is a sign that Atlanta radio as we knew it is finally tango uniform. Best of luck you guys are legends and no one or whatever corporate voice track they replace you with will ever stand up. Best wishes, Erik
