Call Letter Changes

Back the the DJO calls, what does it cost to get a new set of calls? Do they have to pay the FCC as well as American?

I don't get your question.
Call letters do not cost anything, except a small filing fee.

"The REAL reason is money. From an application filed yesterday (9/9/09):

THE PARTIES TO THE SUBJECT TRANSACTION HEREBY REQUEST AN ADDITIONAL 90 DAYS, UNTIL DECEMBER 13, 2009, TO CONSUMMATE THE ASSIGNMENT OF WCIN(AM), CINCINNATI, OH (FIN 32953) FROM AMERICAN BROADCASTING, LLC TO ALCHEMY II BROADCASTING, LLC. ADDITIONAL TIME IS NEEDED IN THIS ECONOMIC CLIMATE SO THAT THE BUYER MAY SECURE FINANCING."

So the above isn't about securing the calls, it's about actually buying the station? They walked away from 1160 without actually securing financing for 1480? What happens in 90 days if they don't?

Really no reason you can't be WDJO except for a quick "WCIN Cinncinati" at the top of the hour, is there? (The chopped up jingles sound kinda crappy for some reason).. Others have done it (first I remember was KYST near Houston when they did an all Beatles format..they were "KBTL" except for the legal ID.)

550 USED TO DO IT ... during its WLW-A days ...

I remember the TOH announcement as This WAS WKRC Cincinnati, now 550-WLW; later it was changed to incorporate the WLWA call letters.

Update: Someone on the internet had the TOH announcement during its WLWA days ... "Promoted as "WLW 550," the real calls were cleverly disguised at the top of each hour, when a promo proudly proclaimed, "550 WLW A Cincinnati Radio Station!"

Speaking of chopped jingles and 55.....

During the deflating years it was decided to add "W" to the station's name, now it was 55WKRC. Just prior to Jacor purchasing the frequency, the "W" was dropped and the station became 55KRC once again. The jingles (JAM "The Only One") were modified to remove the "W", it sounded awkward but worked for the moment.

We have a similar situation here is Columbus. WRFD has asked for it's FOURTH 90 days to CONSUMMATE THE ASSIGNMENT of WRFD to WVCO-FM.
So, the sale was approved back in September of 2008 and the FCC is still granting then them the additional days CONSUMMATE THE ASSIGNMENT. If WJDO/WCIN needs an additional 90 days, it looks like the FCC will approve it due to the bad economy.

From what I was told by WJDO/WCIN, the WJDO call letters have been reserved for them until they are able to purchase WCIN 1480. I wasn't
aware a station(WCIN/WCIN) could reserve a set of call letters(WDJO) with it's FCC sale application. ALCHEMY II BROADCASTING wants the
WDJO call letters back when they purchase 1480 AM.

Here is the application in Columbus:

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs...h.cgi?exhibit_id=792109&formid=905&q_num=5000

The parties herein seek an additional ninety (90) days (through to and including Monday,
December 21, 2009) within which to consummate the assignment of station WRFD from
Assignor to Assignee. The information supporting this request has been provided by Assignee.

Seems like American could have been stand up people and just changed the calls on 1480 to WDJO.
It may have helped the transition to 1480.
