WARE- WARE

This was said to be one of only two stations in the country whose call letters spell out its city of license in full (the other was WACO).

This was once the basis for a question on the original version of The Hollywood Squares (Peter Marshall, NBC).

"Believe It...Or Not!"

WRCH - Only RiCH people listen to this station (ok... I made that up)

WRCH stood for Radio Corporation of Hartford. Originally 910 AM/100.5 FM. Then 910 became WRCQ and 100.5 took on a Beautiful Music Format and the music was described as Rich Music. 910 eventually became Solid Gold 91-Q.

More from CT:

95.7 WKSS - KiSS. Used to be WBMI and before that WMMW-FM.
910 WLAT - LATino Radio. Tropical Formated Mega 910. Used to be on 1230 AM as LATino 1230.
1230 WNEZ - Calls used to be on 910 and stood for New Britain's EZ Listening. (910 is licensed to New Britain). In 2001 WNEZ stood for NEWS as the station simulcast the Spanish All-News format from WNNY in New York.
990 WXCT - eXacT radio and 990 The X in CT. (Former slogans).
104.1 WMRQ - Modern Rock.
1550 WDZK - Disney Connecticut.
1380 WFNW - Financial News Waterbury? (formerly a Business Talk Station. Licensed to Naugatuck the next town over from Waterbury). Now Spanish.
600 WICC - Industrial Center of Connecticut. (Bridgeport)
104.9 WIHS - We're In His Service. (Former calls of TV 38 in Boston)
94.3/1340 WYBC - Yale Broadcasting Company.
105.5 WQGN - Q GrotoN. (Q-105).
105.5 WDBY - DanBurY. (Station is licensed to nearby Patterson, New York).
1420 WLIS - Long Island Sound. (Old Saybrook is close to Long Island Sound).
990 WNTY - NineTY. (For AM 990 former calls of WXCT 990). Also not sure if its related or not, but WNTY was founded in 1969 by The Rice Family who owned WINY in Putnam. (WNTY, WINY sound very similar).
1350 WNLK - NorwaLK.
1400 WSTC - STamford Connecticut.
98.7 WNLC - New London Connecticut. (Calls used to be on the now defunct 1510 AM in New London).
104.1 WIOF - Looks Like 104. (Now WMRQ).
1220 WQUN - QUiNnipaic University.
88.5 WVOF - Voice of Farifield University.
91.1/1260 WSHU - Sacred Heart University.
88.7 WNHU - University of New Haven.
91.3 WWUH - University of Hartford.

Defunct Connecticut Stations:

WLCR = Litchfield Country Radio
WTOR = TORrington.
1230 WTHT The Hartford Times newspaper.

However, a few years ago, a third of these rare birds was spotted. Anyone know what it was? I'll give you a hint: it was an FM station and it was east of the Mississippi.

No takers? Okay: It's WISE for Wise, Virginia...owned by Virginia Tech.

Four more from Connecticut:

WJMJ 88.9 -- Jesus, Mary and Joseph. (Radio outlet of the Archdiocese of Hartford)
WCTF 1170 -- Connecticut (CT) affiliate of Family (F) Radio.
WNVR 1380 (defunct) -- Naugatuck Valley Radio
WSCR 1220 (defunct) -- Suburban Country Radio

Here's a couple from the South Coast:

1320 in Attleboro's original calls...WARA...stood for its original ownership group when founded in the early 1950's...The Attleboro Radio Association.

1340 WNBH...in its early days...had studios at the New Bedford Hotel.

And from Rhode Island:

790 WEAN, during its ownership by the Shepard Company Department Stores, stood for "We Entertain A Nation".

And...of course...990 WALE..."We Are Lousy Eternally"! ;D :D ;D

Can't believe I forgot to include WDBY! Considering I was the Marketing Director there!

Actually, Carter Radio Network (WROL, WACE, WRIB. and WCRN, of which the Carberry family--air name Carter--retains WACE and WCRN).

Don't forget (formerly) WLOB-1310 in Portland, Maine. And did Carters own something in NH?

WHEB ...His Eternal Blessing ! I know, I worked there with Don Kelly, EJ Crummey, Duncan Dewer (what ever happened to him ?), Bill Silver...and, I think Garabedian was just wrapping up some kind of programming consultancy (pre-GTR) there...

I believe Mr. Dewar runs his own advertising agency in Southern Maine.
