Can Houston radio get any worse?

The one thing i can't seem to figure out is why radio corporations never try a Active Rock format. Houston has never had one from what i know. Maybe it would be a huge money maker. Nobody knows because it's never been tried here.

You don't need to do heroin to know it's bad for you.

Take a look at the Houston radio ratings. Urban, Urban, Soft Rock, Pop, Christian, and Mexican. That's what's getting big numbers. Not rock. Houston is becoming a town of minorities. That's not good for a format that tagets young white men. When country is no longer in the Top 5, you know Houston's demo has changed.

I've said this on the NYC board with regards to WRXP: The problem with active rock is it's a sub genre of a sub genre. Just like alternative. What these subgenres need to do to get on the radio is to combine. That's what RXP was doing in its final days. The other trend is for active rockers to get airplay on CHR. Could KRBE play Disturbed? From what I can see on their playlist, they're playing country/rock acts like Jason Aldean and Zac Brown Band. Hmmm.

If Houston is such a "minority" town, then how come there are two classic rock stations, three CHRs? Oh yeah, and explain how an AC station is number one in Houston? How are those formats minority formats? Country stations not in the top 5 have NOTHING to do with a lack of "young white men" in Houston. It has much to do with the fact that they both suck and trimmed legendary personalities for canned liners, voice tracking and smaller playlists. Active rock is not a "sub genre." There are two types of modern rock: Alternative and active. Active leans on harder rock such as Tool, Metallica, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine. Alternative leans on stuff like The Black Keys, Weezer and Arcade Fire.
Why do you have urban listed twice? There's urban ac and hip hop, two different formats. And what is Mexican? Are you talking about Mexican food? Because a "Mexican" format does not exist. With an over saturation of Spanish-Language formats, numbers are not that high compared to English-Language formats.

KRBE playing Zac Brown and Jason Aldean? Perhaps you have been using that heroin that is bad for you (bad analogy by the way).

What do you call a town where more than half of the population is either black or Hispanic?

Looking at the formats, the ratings, and the companies that own stations in Houston, I don't see anyone flipping to Active Rock.

Hey I was surprised too, but they showed up on their playlists.

The Buzz is about as active rock as this market will ever get.

Of the artists you listed above as active format staples, Pantera is the only one not in the regular rotation. Even those guys get airplay Sunday nights on the Texas Buzz.

I wish 94.5 jammed Pantera and GNR during regular hours, but I'll take what I can get.

I prefer KTBZ to a lot of other rock frequencies because I get the rare mixture of Disturbed and Rage with the Black Keys, Coldplay and other alternative mainstays. It's not as dreadful a station as many think. In fact, I think it's outstanding.

Radio One seriously needs some competition.

I've been voicing my opinion about that same thing since KPTY was snatched off the air. But the only problem is neither company in the market would flip anything just to "play it safe". Clear Channel could do it since there is 1 FM that's not in the top 10, but last i checked, a 3-share kinda isn't really considered as flippable. CBS could've done it but all of the FM's there are doin pretty good, especially now since Mega looks like its gaining a little steam now. I know it wouldn't work with Cumulus because of their rimshots. And i wouldn't waste my time on Cox because i heard their urbans before and... yeah.

The million dollar question is who could be able to do it in the future.
