Can Megyn Kelly compete with 60 minutes?

It's worse than Rock Center. Williams was already on the payroll in that case. In this case, they've paid a LOT of money for a host that apparently lacks any real ability to draw viewers.

This isn't her only outlet. They will spread her salary out over several shows in similar spots. It's not like Dateline was a big draw either.

Same issue though. NBC didn't shell out millions for a host for Dateline. For Kelly to justify her salary, she'll need to draw big on Sundays and in the 9AM weekday slot. Other big earners at NBC didn't come in at large salaries, they got raises after they proved they could draw. It certainly isn't going to bankrupt NBC News and is nothing more than a rounding error on Comcast's earnings report, but it does highlight the foolishness of paying big bucks to hire somebody who has had nothing more than brief notoriety.

IMO, bringing her Fox News viewers with her to her new shows, if she can do that, won't be enough for ratings success. And I think there's doubt that she will retain Fox News viewers if she doesn't give them the political red meat they're used to. Considering that the nation is more politically divided than ever before following the election, Megan will have to stay away from interjecting her own political views. There are a lot of liberal and moderate viewers who will tune out if she does so. I've been told that Mike Wallace was conservative, but he didn't give his opinions, and nobody cared. I suspect NBC has an understanding with her about that.

I don't think that was the intent. My sense is she felt stifled at Fox, that she wasn't being utilized to her full potential, and was looking for a place where she could use all of her knowledge and experience. Fox is a place where the message is more important than the messenger. She felt she wasn't that kind of journalist. Is she worth all the money? That's not for me to say. She's worth what companies are willing to pay.

But my question to you is can someone on TV reinvent themselves? Is she more than a one-trick pony? Obviously someone at NBC News thinks she is. So they've given her multiple platforms to demonstrate what she can do. If she can't do it, the contract won't be renewed. It's a chance you take with anyone.

I'm a liberal, and despise people like Jones, but I don't get the furor. He's in the news frequently, and he's controversial, so he IS news, and it's valid to cover him. Does it give him publicity and a sounding-board? Sure it does, but that's OK in a free society. I'd analogize it to the outrage that occurs at UC Berkeley among left-leaning students when right-wing pundits like Ann Coulter are scheduled to speak on campus. They like to characterize her views as "hate speech." I suspect that Coulter just loves the news coverage and publicity that she gets when she's DENIED the speaking engagement due to the outrage. If the lefties had just kept quiet, and let her speak, who would have cared the next day?

Not sure that any groups are actually calling for advertisers to pull their adds from this show or this interview. In fact, here's an interview with the head of Media Matters on the subject. In it, he explains they also didn't call for a boycott of Hannity (which may be news to Hannity).

Also there's a second reason I think the censorship is dumb mainly because NBC can always release the uncensored version of the Megyn Kelly/Alex Jones interview on the NBC on demand app. I think the boycott is really about Megyn Kelly and did she really walk away from playing the Tomi Lahren card at Fox News. But from what I seen in the past year was that Kelly was seen as too sane for Fox News during the removal of Ailes.

I say NBC should release the uncensored version of the Alex Jones interview for NBC app and NBC owned stations. See I say the Alex Jones interview is significant because he's been called the New Rush Limbaugh and the new Roger Ailes given the spotlight he's been getting in the past year plus Infowars supposedly more powerful than Fox News because of Joneses staff being connected to Trump and Putin.

It's no secret that Kelly wanted to do daytime TV, that's the top priority for her and NBC and that's what NBC is going to judge her on. The lighter things she wants to at 9 am wouldn't work on cable news, Fox News has a very successful morning program, and at Fox the O&O's local shows bring in a lot of money and do very well compared to national shows. Fox doesn't seem to supportive of prime-time news programs, they never last to long. It was to large of a risk for Fox News and Fox to do the type of shows Megyn wanted to do.

The 9 am hour at NBC has been under preforming for some time and with all of the some what recent changes (Holt to Nightly, Savannah to Today) the talent pool was getting somewhat low. Matt Lauer has been rumored to retire. NBC does like grooming people for prime jobs. That is the reason Brian Williams spent all of those years on MSNBC and CNBC while very little watched, NBC would bump up his pay and told him he might get the Nighty News slot when others tried to go after him.

What do you mean "uncensored?" The issue with advertisers isn't anything in particular in the interview, but rather that it's being done at all.

I'm not sure anyone is saying that. People go to Alex Jones because of his conspiracy views, Jones doesn't share much of the same audience Fox News and Rush. They have gone after Jones before because of some of views.

When 60 Minutes did it's piece on "Fake News" a few months ago, it wasn't a single interview with one person. It was multiple interviews showing all sides of the issue. It sounds like NBC is trying to do that with Alex Jones.

"he would release an unedited version of the interview"

I smell a lawsuit. Or at least a cease & desist

If he signed a release form, and I bet he did, the interview becomes the sole property of NBC News.

Which he will ignore, as he considers the mainstream media and the legal system parts of "the enemy." It will get out, one way or another, and if he's prosecuted, his becoming a martyr for his own cause will only further elevate him in the eyes of his followers.

Actually according to Fox, he's already released it.
