"Can Sony Make HD Radio A Winner?"

When did I buy a 200 dollar table radio? When I bought my Cambridge Soundworks. I've bought too many 100 dollar plus radios to mention. There is the Drakw SW8. Wait...that's not a 200 dollar "table radio". It's an EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLAR TABLE RADIO! Or it was when Drake quit making table radios. Much of it's circuitry lives on in the Eton E1.

The Sony SRFA100 was a technological marvel, and not just for AM Stereo (it received all four systems). It had bandwidth beyond 10khz (I've actually measured it), separation beyond 35db (C-Quam...again I measured it when WNNC in Newton NC was installing C-Quam in 1984), and the REAL innovation, the first consumer product with a synchronous detector!

These "failures" (SRFA100s) sell for TONS on e-bay...especially like new samples like mine. It still has the "It's a Sony" sticker on the lower left corner.

Most of these radios also end up in the local landfills, albiet some were resurrected to be sold on Ebay for the lucky seller making 50 bucks or less.

Actually WGIL, CBS FM STILL EXISTS...ON HD! A great reason to buy one...you'll miss great programming without it!

I've heard the programming. Speciality shows by what sound like 25 year olds that start at :45 past because nobody bothers to sync the logs. Segued oldies... I can do that at home with my copy of the CBS-FM jingles and OTS Juke... and better audio processing and production elements and make my own podcasts. Thank you.

Obviously you are not from NY, because if you compare what's on the HD-2 channel to what they used to do, it's not even close.

But they are only novelties to radio geeks. Just like the BA and Accurian will be some day.

Oh sure, CBS-FM exists all right...with no air personalities (since they bill zero, they couldn't even afford to pay the former air staff union scale), no services (weather, traffic, etc.), segues that would embarass a beginner and programming I can duplicate on my iPod. Absolutely NO compelling content. A format that's on HD2 for a reason...it's a non-starter. A shell of its former self. If you had ever heard it in its prime, you'd understand.

I HAVE HEARD WCBS! DUH! But I've honestly not heard it since the switch to HD2. If you say it's a "shell of it's former self", I buy that.

This one's not. An HD2 in Charlotte NC http://www.theproductionroom.net/shuffle.wma

There are LOTS of innovative multicast offerings, and also plenty of dull, boring ones. Kind of like life itself!

As for the SRF-A100, Pocket as usual doesn't know what he's talking about. I don't know of a single one (and I know of MANY) that was purchased in the 80s that doesn't still work, even if it has been roughly treated (as a monitor at remotes, etc.) Mine has always been babied, and 24 years later is still actually "like new". Not a scratch, not a scuff, owners manual and packing materials intact, even the "It's a Sony" sticker. This have the best quality/widest bandwidth of any portable AM radio ever offered. It's sensitive as all getout, and has decent fm as well. The speakers are small, but it sounds SUPERB in stereo. Anyone who thinks the SRFA100 is just another radio doesn't know enough about radios to have an opinion!

Maybe I don't know about these Sony SRF-A100 radios as you say... this is why they are going for 10 bucks on Ebay:

I do know one thing... HD radios will be 10 bucks on Ebay soon enough when no one wants them...

I listen to the stream online since I don't live in New York City. Although it is fully automated, the music is still very good. If I ever go back to NYC for a visit, I'm bringing along an HD receiver to listen off the air.

IF that ever happened (it wont), I'd be buying up a whole lot of them! 8)
