Can WTQR bounce back?

Big Doug and C Chenn sound like they are in love.

When you can't make it in the biz and are tossed aside it's good to have someone to lean on for sure.

Radio is evil, CC is evil, Entercom is Evil, yeah, it's all a conspiracy.

I guess that means all those folks who have adapted to the changing landscape in radio are evil too?

thanks...you're analyis is stunning.

Eyewitless- a whole lotta people have been "tossed aside", not because they couldn't cut it in the biz, but because the corporate banker types concluded that "this position should be filled with technology, cause we can write off the technology costs, plus we don't have to pay a computer a salary".

Agreed, business is tough.

I've been tossed aside before, but I don't feel like there was any evil involved.

It's SHOW BUSINESS, not show friendship.

Plenty of people have seen the changes coming and adapted and put themselves in a position to maintain and succeed. Are they evil too?

If you love what you do and stay on your toes and keep an eye on the horizon you can make it. But making bitter personal comments about people only reflects back on YOU.

I know that when I was tossed aside, I looked at myself and took action to make sure it didn't happen again.
I did not waste time calling people evil and blaming everyone else.

We're having a great converstation about the subject of the post: Can TQR bounce back, yet a lot of the posts are about calling people evil and bloodsucking....seems kind of childish.

I can just see the headline: "CC-GSO Flagship Station Killed By Wolf"--- same as they said when the old WMQX died ("The Triad's Oldies 93 Killed By Wolf")

It's only a matter of time...

Of course, Entercom brought back Oldies 93 on WPAW's HD-2 channel; would CC-GSO do the same with WTQR should the format end up changing?

How about this...

If Big Paul were still with us (god rest his soul), would TQR have taken the beating they have in last 18 months?

Summer 06 TQR was a 9 or 10 stare radio station....now 5.4.
25-54 they are 9th currently from Top 2 18 months ago.

I think we all know the answer is no.....that if Big Paul were on the scene this would be a different battle.

So....is there anyone at TQR with his passion and know how to bring the station back to a more competitive posture?

Or has Pauls passion and know how been replaced with CC formulas and cutbacks to point of no return?

The eye is right about Big Paul! Things would have been different. Paul had a real feel for his audience (not just mornings but as the PD). He would have fought the battle necessary to make the CC formula work. But, somewhere, there is a PD and air talent with the same kind of understanding and passion. If CC will give him (or her) the tools, TQR can recover!

They have got to let the music control be local! They need to stop the voice tracking except on weekends. They need to make their personalities visible in the whole metro - not just along highway 68. I don't see Wolf out much, either!

Maybe The Walf staff is so busy celebrating that huge .1 12+ victory...to be out in public.

Course Michael Phelps won by mini micro seconds...but it was still a win.

Lots of comments on this thread about how meaningless a .1 win is...however if you look at each book as a battle....a win is a win, right? Does anybody think less of Michael Phelps, because he didn't win by 3 seconds?

Next book may be another story, but you can't take this one away from the howlers.

THAT is the million dollar question. Will CC commit to making the changes that NEED to be made...not just knee jerk reactions for the sake of making changes. They did that and it didn't work.

Attention Radio Fanz!

I've been a long time lurker of the boards and now first time poster. I guess you can say I'm popping my "forum cherry" ;D The deal is this:

eyewitness news is right! A win is a win. Great job comparing this to Michael Phelps wins in the

-bug

I beg to differ with the "bug". The Michael Phelps analogy is does not apply here - for several reasons:

1- There is no margin of error in an Olympic timer - a win is a win, but is radio, the error could be three points either way. It is not even a close comparison.

2- In the Olympics, it is about winning the gold medals. In radio it is about making money. Sure, money will naurally flow to Phelps, but that was not his primary motivation.

3- Money will go to Phelps because he won EIGHT gold medals not because he beat a competitor by .1. (since Wolf and TQR finished 4th and 5th respectively, they didn't win ANY medals).

3- Phelps beat ALL of the competitors in the race, Wolf did not.

With all due respect to eyewitnessnews, a win is not a win when it comes to the radio business. Real question is can you make money with it. I will give you this - Wolf has done better than any previous challenger to WTQR. Just don't get caught up in the celebration too long.

One thing you arent addressing here is the real nice hiney shots from the beach volley ball. Which station represents that in this race? Can TQR bring that back? ::)

so....now its about money.

Ok, break out the miller caplans and let's see who outbilled who.

As for my Phelps example, I think many would agree that the "country" battle is what we're talking about. Michael Phelps competes against swimmers. Not track and field stars. In his chosen sport he beat other folks doing the same thing. The Walf and TQR are head to head competitors. Sure that battle is not taking place in a vacuum, but the country shares are split now and it is unlikely either station will achieve "top dog" in the market status unless one of them really drops the ball. So to say Wolf doesn't get a win, cause they didn't beat the rest of the market really doesn't make sense.

Whichever station is the "top country" station will ultimately make more money than the other format station.

What say you X?

and hey, I didn't even call you a bloodsucker or evil.

As for the olympics....is it just me or does it look like Costas is wearing a hairpiece? Or he died the hair...or something.

Hey Skywitness,

You make a nice apologist for the state of radio 2008. I especially liked the lame "Jerry McGuire" reference. When do you break out "You complete me" or "You had me at hello"?

I don't consider myself bitter. I just can't stand hypocrisy and greed. Nor can I stand buzzword-slinging, sloganeering corporate mouthpieces like yourself.

I have to agree with Big Don here and say that the Eye is right on. Thanks for the crystalization Eye. We could use a few more like you in the biz and on the board. It's impressive to see Big Don Breathisbad eat his words like that and jump on the reason wagon. Stranger things have happened on a Billy Joel album!!! ;D :D :) :p

Sniff, you complete me.

Gotta go, I have a conference call with other corporate mouthpieces, we're discussing some new buzzwords, slogans, hypocrisy and greed.

We're also going to discuss how happy we are that Big Doug has dispelled any notion that he harbors any bitterness.

Big Doug, you are a true seer of the truth.

In case you haven't noticed, the radio business is ALWAYS about the money!

Now for the country battle - that is the problem! It has become about country music. What you have to recognize that is it not Wolf that has mortally wounded WTQR. It was the various owners turning TQR into little more than a juke box.

In the day TQR totally dominated the market, it was about more than just the music.

There were thousands of people who listened to Dale and Eloise, and later Paul and Eloise, that didn't care country music. They wanted to be entertained and informed. WTQR was informative, and Eloise and partners were entertaining. There was real news, traffic, weather, and community service.

The dominating WTQR was a full service radio station that happened to play country music (and that country music was fully researched - locally). That station is long gone - and what a shame!

All of you guys are so knowable, but still according to the diaries tally from Arbitron the station that was mentioned the most in the Triad was WTQR.

TQR, KZL, PAW, JMH, MAG, QMG, THZ, KRR, SMW, VBZ, FDD, ZTK, SJS, MKS, IST.

makes sense.

TQR has been in the same format in the market longer than anyone else.

Interesting because WPAW shows up third in that list and they are only 18 months old.

shows the strength of the country format in this market....guess that's why 93.1 isn't playing Chuck Berry anymore.

I guess if radio sales people could sell cume WTQR would be top dog.

That'll be the day.

Long time lurker, first time poster...this has to be the most interesting thread I've ever seen on this board...

I'm throwing my 2 cents in here...forget ratings and revenue for just a second. Put all of the corporate b-s comments aside as well and answer me this one as we compare Walf and TQR...What happened to jocks really caring about being on the radio? Pride in your job and what not? Lotta jocks anymore sound like they're just going through the motions...reading their liner cards and stuff...rather than putting their own feeling into things...ya know, pride...that goes with any job, you've gotta wanna be there ya know?

I went to the Reba concert back in the winter in Winston, and I could tell who wanted to be there and who didn't...I think that pretty much answers the 'bounce back' question 'ol eye has been trying to answer.

The eye ain't always right...but I bet he wishes he was...

so don't leave us hangin'.

who wanted to be there and who didn't?

I can't say I'm always right, but I do know that I've only been wrong once, and that's when I thought i was wrong and wasn't. ::)

On the level though, great discussion. Great points made by many.

the eye sees all but only understands some.
