Can you say God D@mn on air?

fwmw and Tom Wells get what I'm saying. Using it in the mic as a jock and allowing it to play as recorded in a song are completely different things. Furthermore, allowing it to play in some songs (say, from The Eagles) is easier to get by with than in others (say, from Marilyn Manson).

I will agree that, 99.9% of the time, using the phrase as a jock on the mic is next to impossible to defend. The other .1% of the time, there better be a visible tornado outside your studio window. Close.

But putting a blanket kybosh on a questionable phrase, for all uses in all contexts, just sounds bad. It's not like listeners don't notice edits like that. Even if you do edit it, it's not like they don't know what is being said.

What I've been saying is you have to use your head, know your audience, and know your format. Allowing "god damn" to play in a song on an oldies rock station in Salem is different from allowing it to play on an alt rock station in Gary.

As for you, MightyFrenchman, I may be young, but I've got a postgraduate degree in this and have worked in this state and others as everything from a mic monkey to an ND. So don't pull the "old timer" card on me.

I have edited some things I play. I've removed an "F'n" from an audio clip where it was WAY too prominent.
From the movie "Return of the Living Dead", where the cops show up at the mortuary.....
"We're at the mortuary. We see two."....." FREEZE OR I'LL BLOW YOUR <snip> BRAINS OUT! "
Zombie: " BRAIIIINS!.... (on police car radio ) "Send more cops".

While in the song "Sand ***k" by Ten Foot Faces, it is integral as part of the refrain, yet not in your face.

The occurrances of GD are most notably in songs by "Jon Wayne" where the lead is in a west-texas kinda drawl, and used in
a context as " Sittin' there like a GD magpie on a telephone wire." or " Speak English, GD-it...".

I see this usage as different from what I hear in current "rap" type music.
It seems more tongue-in-cheek and humorous, while (to me) most current music seems to use the phrase as a bludgeon.

Only baby-boomers may know the answer to this question. Did any radio stations, maybe AOR stations when that format came around after the album was originally released, play "The Pusher" by the greatest rock band of all time, Steppenwolf? The phrase in question of course, was throughout the whole song.

Endlessly...and it was not edited.

I heard it as well. This is no surprise. Turn on the tube and within 15 minutes someone will say "Kiss my ass".
This has been going on for more than a decade.

The big guys are playing a different game than the small broadcaster.

About 10 percent of the population is impressed by foul language. That's why we have trashy movies with no
plot, just four letter words and violence. There are decent ratings to be made .from the gutter. The big boys consider breaking rules and paying fines part of the cost of doing business. If they can improve ratings and make money despite he fine, it's called profit and good business.

For a small station, a large FCC fine can spell death. Expect not only the jock to be fired. But, his boss
as well. The station likely will not have the money for the fine. So, the treasury can sell the station license
at a sheriff's sale.

All the time I hear rebel wannabes say the big boys played this four letter word. Why don't we dare? Answer.
There's no we here. Get your own damn station license. Have the guts to put your own ass on the line for your enlightened cause.

I don't think a toilet for a mouth makes you so cool.

I agree that there is only a small percentage of the population that are impressed by bad words, and they tend to be 10-year-old boys who think using them makes them seem older. But that doesn't mean everyone else is offended by them, most people just don't care. Stations getting fined and advertisers pulling out show me that America still has some remnants of those Puritans around.

IIRC, D@#n was a verb. Maybe that was the difference. But then again, so was Rev Wright's proclaimation. But God was d@#ing a villian, not a country.

Personally, I would NEVER use it or allow it on a station I owned.

If that's the best you can do to express yourself, you don''t belong on radio. You need a job in a meat packing plant.

Amen... While I'm nowhere near a religious zealot, I do love the Lord & pray daily. I find this expression to be exceptionally offensive, whether it's used on the radio, TV, in print or at the local meat packing plant.

I could say I'm impressed but what's your point?
