Cancer Radio, a hard listen, on WPRO.

I like WPRO. But I tried to listen to the Cancer programing and had to quit.
I don't know how others feel, I just think 3 days of this is way too much.
It's also a chance for WHJJ to get some of it's listeners back. But since WHJJ
wouldn't know an opportunity if it hit them like a truck. That ain't gonna happen.
Now, What WPRO is doing is
very noble. I just think listeners may want to hear the events of the day. Walter.
 
Walter, for 3 days out of the year (1 being a weekend day), I don't think it is out of hand at all for this programming. Yes, it is a hard listen; but that is the point. I applauded Citadel when they launched this a couple of years ago (I had always listened to Entercom's Jimmy Fund radiothon prior to Citadel jumping on board) and as a person who's family has been touched by cancer, it is good for people to hear what goes on and, God forbid, if they have to deal with it, what great facilities we have in the area (not only here in RI; but also up in Boston at Dana Farber as WEEI FM simulcasts their August Radiothon here as well).

It may make you uncomfortable; but that is the great thing about the invention of the radio...it has a dial that you can switch it off the station....regular programming will be back on Monday

I don't want to listen to anything that is going to bring my mood down. I'll watch the Jerry Lewis telethon simply because they make an effort to keep it entertaining. That is what keeps people tuned in. Somehow I don't think that WPRO is using the same approach. From what I read here it sounds damn depressing. So I'll pass.
 
Yes it is a good cause, but VERY bad radio. I'll bet you anything this is some pet project of their manager Barbara Hayes. Why would you do this very sad radio telethon during a survey period? I'll tell you why, the GM wants to. I wonder if the PD over there has the backbone to stand up to her. My guess is no. If you must keep the GM happy, do it on a weekend only, outside the book. Replace the bug guy, the mortgage guy, the psychic lady, the attorney, those 5 girls that blab, the Dolans and do it there.

I feel sorry for those kids at Hasbro. But I feel sorry too for the WPRO listener.

The comment from JointChinese reminded me of American Idol's "Idol Gives Back" telethon this past week.

APPLAUSE for what Idol did; and parent News Corp. (Fox) pitching in the big-bux matching pledges but...

QUESTION: For-all-of-y'all:
Did the fundraiser detract from the usual excitment of American Idol?
Or did you buy-into the generous intention?

YES it did. I had Tivo'd the Idol segment because I was away on Wed night. Way too much about Africa! So I just started fast forwarding through those parts.

But the Hasbro deal, I was just forced to tune away. That pity party yesterday on 'PRO made even Dan York's show seem appealing.
 
A great cause! A great cause that makes for terrible talk radio though.
Not so bad for the music and sports stations because they're not forced to discuss the subject every minute of their shows. They're allowed to play music and and talk sports in-between asking for donations.
But these talk hosts are forced to discuss kids with cancer and ask for money every minute of their shows.
Not good radio and not good listening! You'd think they'd mix it up a bit more because they lose huge audience and therefore lose a huge pool of potential donations.

Most of us know how exciting those are? Cancer fund-raisers fall into the same category! :p

"A hard listen." Please. Of course it's a hard listen... but we don't want to think about these kinds of things, right? We'd rather think about all kinds of unimportant things than the things that matter in life. Ignorance is bliss, right? :mad:
 
The whole idea of a radiothon is to have an audience that is listening and is donating money. To run the same programming for 3 days in a row on a talk station is a mistake in my opinion. If you keep the programming fresh then you keep an audience. If not then you don't. If the Jerry Lewis telethon ran over 3 days what would the audience #'s be as the days wore on? There is a way to program this fundraiser that would keep it fresh and would keep the audience. BTW I called in my donation to this very worthy cause. You?? The cause is very worthy and the stations' involvement is very necessary. I just think they could package their programming better on WPRO to maxamize their efforts.
