Can't we all get the ratings if we really want them?

hypothetical situation. If you want to advertise on a radio station, don't they disclose the ratings to you so that you can decide where you would like to spend your advertising dollars? I would think that such information is part of the materials they provide you with so they can try to sell you ad time. Now since radio stations aren't in business to turn away money, it would seem to me that if you simply request an advertising packet from various radio stations that you could probably get some ratings information in your hands without to much difficulty. Do you agree or disagree?

Disagree because even as a potential sponsor you're not going to be handed a breakdown of every station in the market. You're going to get something that portrays the station making the pitch to you in a favorable light. You won't see what we see when those numbers are disclosed.

Do Advertising/marketing firms get Ratings data so that potential sponsors can actually spend their money where it will do the most good and not just at a station who wants to paint itself in a favorable light?

OK, so from what I understand pretty much anybody (potential sponsors) could get the ratings data from ad agencies. It's just a matter of making that call and having something you want to sell. Not sure how well people are screened though. I'm wondering if someone calls with a fake product or business, if the ad agency would just forward ratings info to you at your request anyway.

PS. Don't think for a second I am going to do this. It's purely a hypothethical situation. I honestly don't care enough what the ratings are to pull such shenanigans. I'm just curious if it's possible.

No, there is a vetting process the agencies go through. If there's potential to make money, they're going to assure themselves of that before putting out, so to speak.
