Funny how certain people love to slam cape cod radio stations,
even though they aren't in the market anymore. Well the numbers
are in and WCOD did wonderful. You can what you want about the talent,
but they got it done. Does it matter how?

This is for you juice!!!!!!

Good for Kevin and everyone at 'COD. Glad to see it.

I just got a peek at the 12+ numbers and it looks like "Frank-FM" was a major player! Apparently the station most affected was WCIB. We'll see if "Frank" can sustain its early success or 'CIB rebounds quickly, which I think it will.

Another thought: will Sandab keep WKPE as a classic rocker or perhaps flip to, maybe, country? WCTK continues to be a force east of the Sagamore Bridge and south of the Bourne Bridge, but will a Cape-based country station be able to bill? Just thinking out loud......

LOL. There are two people who post under "Juice"...one of them is out of market and I am in the market, which means I can hear you "Chickypop".

As for WCOD I made a post on a different thread saying that switching to all Christmas music was a good move on WCOD's new consultant's part because many other stations get the "Christmas music spike"...why not WCOD? And they got the spike. I also said the consultant was a good one, but he has the unenviable task of un-doing the mess caused by the program director. You're right, chickypop, who cares how you get the listeners, just get them. It's too bad WCOD can't go all Christmas music all the time, huh? Christmas music saved the day but all of the underlying problems still exist. Did the imaging suddenly get better? Did the morning show suddenly obtain talent in the last 3 months to help the ratings? No. What's the only difference from today as opposed to 3 months ago? Music....specifically Christmas music. I think WCOD's consultant will eventually fix the underlying problems with the station but it's going to take time. From what I'm hearing he's getting the music back to where it needs to be. If the program director and operations manager haven't the skill or knowledge to get it done then you have no choice but to turn to a consultant, and that's sad. Looking at the recent book is it safe to say that we can expect consultants for the Rose and Cool, too?

Frank was huge but Pixy took a big hit. The morning daypart was confusing...launching Rover, then yanking Rover and putting in O & A.

As for Cool "rebounding quickly"...isn't it a little late for that? They should have responded over 6 month ago. They should have solidified their heritage position in the market before Frank even turned-on. As a programmer you should always assume that someone is going to flip-on a station and become your direct competitor and your station's attitude should reflect that. The worst kept secret in the market was the launch of Frank, yet, once again, Qeantenum was caught with their pants down. Re-active management style...not pro-active.

All in all it was a great book for Sandab. Their newly purchased stations even trended up. As for the Rocket flipping to country...that's a tough call. Country already failed on the Cape but was the format done correctly back in the day? Hard to say.

Work on your "show" Chickypop. I'm listening.

I thought Cool 102 was once country but I could be wrong. Cat Country is strong on the Cape & they really are a New Bedford station even though they are looked at as Providence. I don't know how apt Cape country listeners would be to switch loyalties but with Cat Country's recent changes now would be the time for someone to flip to country as WCTK is more vulnerable...not bad but vulnerable since the station isn't the same as it was a year ago staff wise. Any Cape station going country would have to really be local as opposed to just playing country music since you can get that now on both Cat Country & WKLB.

Looking at the 'COD and Rose ratings, I keep wondering if these stations have too much of an overlapping audience. I think it's really hard in a market such as the cape for a company to create enough seperation between a hot ac and chr. I'm glad to see that WCOD has rebounded, though, hopefully they are back on track.

And, perhaps the decline in ratings at PIXY also has to do with their switching to more of a classic rock playlist. I wonder how O&A will do on the Cape ... will they be able to gain back all of Howard Stern's listeners? Would a local morning show have been a better move in the long run at PIXY? In any case, it is really interesting to see how well FRANK has done!

I think Sandab should switch WKPE back to what is was in the mid to late 90s ... Rock 104.7. I still believe a good modern/classic rock mix could succeed on the Cape.

If I remember correctly, Cool 102 used the moniker "Thunder" back around 1995 when it was a country station. I don't know how the station did in ratings & billing, but I think it lasted only a year or so.

Do you think Frank's surge in the numbers has to do with nuance, or maybe a large mass mailing?

Does that format have staying power in this market?

(my "show" did just fine, thanks for listening)

Apparently, the shelf-life for this type of format is 18-24 months, so we'll see what happens with "Frank"

From what I remember, WCIB used to be "Lite 102 WCIB" for quite a while until about '95, then it became "Hot Country Thunder 101.9". After that, I remember it went back to "Lite 102" again with sweepers saying something like "The lite is back on the Cape... Lite 102 WCIB" or something similar. Then, I think it morphed from AC to Classic Rock little by little. It was actually "Coast 102" for like a week, and then I think it became "Cool 102" right after that. So Cool 102 is about 10-11 years old now if I am correct. This all out of memory, so I might have some dates wrong.
