Cape San Blas, FL Daytime AM DX report July 1, 2012

Hi

My wife and I were at Cape San Blas, FL (that's that jutting out cape south of Tallahassee) on July 1, from about 3:30 to 6:15 pm EST. We could not go earlier, as we went to morning church service in Panama City. and also had buffet lunch there.

Also, I totally forgot to being the Select-a-Tenna I had!! However, thankfully, Radio Shack was clearing out their Grundig Loops ($15), and I may have snatched the last one there!

Because we could not stay longer, I spent time on what I felt were the most interesting frequencies....

530 R Enciclopedia decent
540 WFLF
610 WVTJ Pensacola, but 620 IBOC was all over it!
620 WDAE strong
640 R Progreso
690 WIST mixing with Progreso, no sign of WOKV
710 a mess!! likely all the Rebelde's, but WNTM (assumed, conservative talk) squeaked in
740 was trying for Houston, but got Braves baseball (Montgomery AL I guess)
790 likely was WPNN Pensacola
820 I think Largo (Tampa) was strong
870 WWL strong, natch
910 R Metropolitana (Havana) assumed
940 WYLD
950 R Reloj
1000 WYBT Blountstown (I think I was trying for something else!)
1020 R Artemisa, Cuba
1030---for the second time, I tried for KCTA in TX, but I think the thing went off the air on me! No ID heard (but see last entry)
1060 Radio 26, Cuba
1080 R Cadena Habana, Cuba
1140 likely Cuba, but I did not hang around
1180 assumed Rebelde mess
1280 WODT assumed
1330 WEBY assumed
1350 WSMB assumed
1380 WWMI Radio Disney (any others on 1380?)
1420---odd---WBRD Bradenton, but also a horrible tone, like a TIS testing or something---no idea
1450 Pensacola & Sarasota duking it out :)
1600 KLEB in La., but also WKWF when nulled
1620 Rebelde(s) assumed in WNRP null
1660 WCNZ The Avenue, Marco Island FL but choppy satellite audio, however smooth announcements
1680 WLAA
1700 KVNS Brownsville TX! Mention of their website classic1700.com , this was 3:45pm or so

Glad I tried 1700 first!

Wow! This time of year, that had to be a groundwave, I would think. (or 'gulfwave')

You made my day. :)

Now I'm more convinced that I was hearing an inaudible trace of KVNS midday in the summer the times I've been at the Gulf here in central Florida.

Great post. Thanks.

Fits as a "logical progression" of what I hear when staying on the gulf on the other side of Pensacola at the FL-AL line.

cd, it's also interesting you didn't get WLNO on 1060.

I guess they are very directional because they are almost like a local midday on the beach near here on Honeymoon Island and their weak signal can even still be heard midday in this part of Tampa.

^ Oh I have heard it from near Naples when it was country WNOE....I was curious about R 26....I did not list all that I caught in Post 1; only what I recall! Yes I think WLNO was in, but I was more interested in 26.

Thanks for the audio too.

I listened to the 1700 one and that was nice.

No fading at all which would indicate groundwave.

Did the math and that's a 788 mile daytime catch!

And from such a high AM frequency, no less.

Yup....I tend to think that WWMI 1380's IBOC was killing that 1390 clip....what else could explain that? Of course, Pensacola has 1370, which I ignored while there. After all, WDAE's IBOC blew into 610 & 630, hundreds of miles off....

cd

I also wanted to add that the distance from Cape San Blas to Brownsville is about exactly the distance from Bermuda to New York City and roughly the same of much of the northeast coast.

You had many catches there that were from the upper part of the AM band from the east coast of the US but were not as audible as KVNS but also consider they didn't have as much power either.

Another thing is that parts of the Gulf have a higher salinity than the Atlantic ocean too which should be better for conductivity.

Here's a note about WLNO, especially with regard to their signal over into Florida, as mentioned earlier: the station has been operating under an engineering STA for quite some time now as about 500 feet of cable is being replaced. The original STA request was to allow reducing the daytime power from 50 to 5kW, while maintaining the 5kW level at night using their licensed directional patterns.

As you'll note from this letter, however, authority was also granted to allow WLNO to operate non-directional if needed with up to 12.5kW daytime and 1.25kW at night: http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getimportletter_exh.cgi?import_letter_id=33830
