Capitol buys WDNC/WCLY; Curtis gets NCNN/WRBZ

The article at curtismedia.com detailing this week's big radio deal mentions that Curtis picks up a translator station in the Wake Forest/Wakefield area, but I've not been able to find any record of one owned by Capitol or McClatchey. Is anyone aware of what they're referencing here?

Checked out FCC.gov again and Capitol Broadcasting DOES have a construction permit for a translator station, licensed to Louisburg on 98.7, W254AS. The FCC records list it as a repeater for WRAL-FM (it's 96,000-watt signal from 1,840 feet must be very weak there, what with Louisburg being 20 miles away).

Guess Curtis will use this for Y102.9, 96.9 La Ley or to ease FCC concerns about Louisburg's losing FM service if they move the 102.5 FM allotment from there, as was once planned (they were trying to move it to Hillsborough).

What is going to happen to Imus? I think a good music format would be "Patriotic American Songs". They could pull some songs from the 1940's musicals, several Country songs could be used. Would this kind of format work in this area?

Thanks

WDOX does air some music on the weekends, so-called (by them) "Hall of Fame" music, which is a mix of popular standards, some oldies and a bit of classic country. They began doing this back in the early 2000s while simulcasting with WDNC.

Actually, "Hall of Fame" is Don Curtis's show on 680 on Sunday nights. 570's weekend program is the "Million Dollar Music Weekend." Same type of music on both programs, though Curtis occasionally has a running theme to his show.

Hmm....OK, 850 is going to be a music format.

Wonder if Curtis will get the old WKIX calls and go classic country to go as a companion to WQDR. Seems logical to me, I don't know what other music format since they have classic hits on FM....unless it was gospel or standards.

From what I'm hearing, though, the WKIX calls went to Curtis-owned 102.3 in Goldsboro, which simulcasts WWMY Y102.9. Or will they change 102.3's calls again?...

Wouldn't be the first time they've changed the 102.3 FM call letters. Actually, it would be more like the fourth time since they bought the station in the 1990s.

It was WEQR when they bought it and then, from 2001 to 2006 was WKIX; from 2006-2008, WWNF and from 2008 to this writing, WKIX again.

Now the WKIX call letters have seen even more moves than this:

1959 - early 1970s: 850 AM and 96.1 FM in Raleigh
early 1970s-1994 : 850 AM in Raleigh
1994-1998 : 96.1 FM in Raleigh
1998-2001 : 96.9 in Goldboro
2001-2006 : 102.3 in Goldsboro
2006-2008 : 97.7 in Kinston (later relicensed to Walnut Cove)
2008-present : 102.3 in Goldsboro again

Two questions I have concerning this move:

1) In the past, 850 The Buzz has been the IMS Radio Network affiliate, covering the Indy 500 and the NASCAR race at the Brickyard (94.7 QDR only covers the MRN and PRN NASCAR broadcasts). With 850 The Buzz dropping sports, who will cover the IMS races?

2) Primetime with the Packman has been on 620 The Bull since shortly before its former home, Triangle Sports Talk 1490/1090, died in 2006. Will 620 The Bull keep the Packman after Capitol takes over? I don't see him moving to 99.9 The Fan, since they already have a locally-based show in that time slot...

The WKXU calls have moved only once, to Louisburg's 102.5 FM following the July 2004 flip of Burlington's 101.1 from country "Kix 101.1" to talk WZTK.

Those call letters replaced WPCM on 101.1 FM in 1998 when several country stations were consolidated into the Kix simulcast in 1998. Oddly enough, WKXU in Louisburg has never marketed as "Kix", only as "Country 102"

I wouldn't be surprised if 94.7 didn't pick up the IMS races. That was a thorn in their side that they feel asleep and didnt sign that contract years ago and lost the Brickyard.
I don't think the Packman is going to be around, much to his dismay.

You must not know the Curtis people very well. They are not the type to "fall asleep" and if they want the Brickyard they will just go and get it...and not because it's "a thorn in their side." I do agree that Packman is history and few will miss him. The real question is who will be on afternoons on 99.9.

I guess you know are more informed than I. I know if I was them, and couldn't sell the entire Nascar schedule, and deal with the phone calls of where the race is, it would bother me.

Does anybody know what the current status is for this move? I was listening to WDNC for "Primetime with the Packman," and, after a few minutes of dead air, they began simulcasting the Packman's flagship station, WFNZ in Charlotte. Weird...

Power failure at the studio, they had to patch in an emergency WFNZ feed until power was restored.

They got solid state stuff and even multiple circuits these days APE! Lots o' changes. Lots o' changes. ;)

Ape, did you watch the "King Kong" movie? I did, though on the small screen since I never go to theaters.

Responding to the statement about not carrying the whole NASCAR schedule, I remember one time WTQR did not carry a race according to the News and Record, but WSJS was airing baseball. Wonder how mad people got? Back then, though, WFMX was still WFMX.
