Carl Roberts is now on 88.5

Carl Roberts is now on 88.5

I have to say once again 88.5 is musically one has one the best developed playlists in Memphis.
A excellent blend of Neo-soul, old and new R&B, and smooth Jazz.
They have quite a few pro's behind the mic's over there now with Rick Wagner,Tina Tilton, Chris Malone, Stormy, and Carl Roberts.

Michelle is doing a great job with traffic over there also.

Thanks for the kind words Michael. The station does serve a musical genre that is missing from commercial radio here. And yes some great jocks. If you guys haven't check out smooth jazz sunday it's great. Look for Michelle to start doing a weekend air shift soon.

Sweet.. I listen most of the day on Sat. as I'm just a mile from the transmitter at work in a Datacenter... I can't hear some of the 100kw's just accross the interstate from me in here

I would love to do some fill in work on 88.5.. I haven't been on the air anywhere since about 1994.

Is the Rick Wagner at 88.5 the same Rick Wagner that has been around Memphis radio forever and a day????? I'll have to listen and find out. What shift does he do? I'm guessing that it probably the same one......because there's only ONE Rick Wagner.

Well, as Rick Wagner would probably tell you, there were actually two Rick Wagners...

Sometimes you can here "the Loveman" at night 7 to midnight. Also Stormy sometimes at night. and I believe you can here both of them on sundays.

The Department of Common Sense is giving you a big AMEN on that one, 'saur!

I think you got me there

let me restate that... Rick was on KRNB Magic 101

Zach the students produce announcements and public affairs presentations. I hear students in every stopset on the station. Chris (afternoons) and Michelle (Afternoon Traffic) are both former students. The station is a huge media outlet for the city schools airing data aimed for parents, teachers, students. WQOX also airs the Memphis City Council and Shelby Co. Board of Commissioners meeting as well as the Board of Education meetings live.

Thanks for clarifying that Michael. There are students on the air. I'll admit things are different from when I was there. And you will probably hear some air shifts from some students as they get better. Listen for student Dean Brunner he's pretty good. I am enjoying working the midday shift now, as the great Tina Tilton has exited the station. We will miss Tina and wish her the best.

They did all that when I was there, and still had only students on the air.

So in answer to your question, Zach...not really.

Dean's PSA's sound really good.. probably the best of all the students I have heard this year.

I have always enjoyed listening to the students and hearing their progress up till the time where they sound great and are completely comfortable on air.

I always try to check out KOEM in Mesquite Tx when I visit there also.

I never made it to X88 as it was called when I was briefly a HS student here before moving out of town. I did take radio at Wooddale for that very short time. Of course I moved to a small town and immediately got my then 2nd job on the air which was an awesome job to have all throughout high school.

I think it's really cool that these school districts have their own stations, even if they're little Class D 10 watters. I'm sure my life would have turned out different had my high school offered some sort of radio courses. Back in college I missed the opportunity to get on the air at the student station (U. of Alabama) by registering late. So my only on-air experience was at the community college north of Birmingham. And it wasn't much experience... Four pushbuttons activating four reel-to-reels with music. Stopset every single song! A few weeks in, I stopped a second to talk about a song I liked and the head of the program called up and complained that I talked too much and played two songs in a row.

And that was the end of that. :D

Great training for radio in 2007!!! Except, you had 3 buttons too many for today.

Yep, it's all computerized now. Not near so many buttons to push since I was a student. In 1990 WQOX was upgraded to 30,000 watts making it one of the most powerful non comms in the nation. That's the year I started there. I'm proud to say it is now a state of the art station. Oh, and just so you know I started back at 88.5 to get my feet wet again. I work there because I love radio and want to get into commercial radio. I don't get paid a cent and neither did Tina. I just landed my first commercial job doing behind the scenes work. It's not many hours but a great learning experience. Hi Rob!
