Catching up on Burlington

Radio Cougar said:
There is a true feeling of family there....that's not often found in the radio biz.

The way they kick people out of the family, I'd say they're the Corleones.

Glad to see that there are happy folks there. I just wish for the same happiness for those terminated for ostensibly flimsy cause. Somebody has to speak up for them and say "this is wrong and this man in charge is bad." Guess it's up to me. I don't have any facts on why they're gone - that is true. But in the absence of facts, I have rumor and innuendo to shape my thinking. If somebody wants to present the other side of the story to me, I'm listening.

Oh man. Your ego knows no bounds! LOL! I am sure that the owners of Vox are making sure their priority these days is to "shape your thinking" differently.

Of course the people still there are happy... they just keep smiling and nodding, because doing anything else gets you shot out the door. Strive for mediocrity, so long as you nod and say "YES", and "great idea" and "I totally agree..."

Original and new ideas that would break that 1.1 share floor.... how dare you.

Hey, Barlow posts on here, and he has had no problem taking thinly veiled shots at those he has terminated. I know he's lurking.

Might be the most creative thing he does each week.

Breakdancer hit it right on the head. Nod and smile, and don't disagree with anything the boss says. There's a sense of fear in that building. So many people have been let go, no one is sure if they're next on the chopping block. (Has any other radio group around here had the turnover Vox has had? I don't think so.) And it's like that old children's fable, "The Emperor's New Clothes"; the one where every one of the emperor's minions told him how great he looked and cheered as he paraded down the street, even though he was stark naked. All Hail Emperor Barlow! (Or else!) From what I've heard from the inside, morale is pretty lousy. Barlow will talk about you behind your back, and say negative things about other employees to you. And after you've been terminated there's other rumors that will be spread about you. And Je....oops, "Radio Cougar", you should know as well as anyone what it feels like to be terminated for no good reason, it happened to you back when Clear Channel owned the place. So now you have to be a cheerleader for the Vox Empire. I don't think Mr. Barlow is such a nice guy, although he'd like you to believe that.

So much negativity on this board, Phew!

Radio is a very tough business these days. And Vermont radio has never been easy, so double the degree of difficulty. Ken Barlow is a good radio guy. He is very programming oriented, which continues to be rare among senior management types. If Ken could I think he'd be local live 24/7 with great jocks and a full complement of support people.

Anything he is doing is because he feels he has to do it. Running a radio station is a lonely, frustrating job. Give the man a break.

And it appears that Star has hired perhaps the nicest person I know to host their morning show...Tim Kavanagh will be joining forces with Tara on February 20th.

I grew up two doors down from Tim in the North End. He's got a great sense of humor, and he has a very nice family. We have a tradition of catching up during the opening ceremony of each Olympics...which started years ago when he coincidentally called my dad twice during Olympics to help him with his plumbing. He's a great guy, and I wish him the best of luck over there.

Was up this past weekend...I spent most of my time at Centennial and in the bars, but I picked up the following:

-Listened to the Wizard at the beach. ZZ Top and Billy Squier fit like an old shoe and still sound great. But how long has "classic rock that REALLY rocks" been the mantra? 10 years now? Let's freshen that up, Wizard. Remember, your competitor quit the format. Don't be afraid to deepen that playlist a little bit.

Also, speaking of fresh, how on God's green Earth does WIZN not have a Facebook fan page? The link on their website for Facebook links to a jock's personal page. FAIL.

-When did WJOY start mixing in 70s music? Had them on in the car after the Sox game on Saturday afternoon. Was interesting to hear Walter Murphy and England Dan/John Ford Coley alongside "Blue Velvet" and "The Lady is a Tramp." Timeless tunes. I don't know why I don't listen to them more. Must be their 1,000 watt stick and their lack of streaming.

-I totally forgot to listen to Planet. Is that an indictment of them, or of me?

-Still waiting for somebody to explain "100% of what we play has to be hits" to me. KISS rule, Triple X. After all, it was Hamilton himself who taught me that.

-Finally, congratulations to Rob Ryan, who will be heard as the voice of UVM women's basketball this year. I miss his talk show on NSN already. Really carried me through afternoons when I had writer's block.

I actually like the WJOY music mix quite a bit... and was fantasizing the other day about that format would sound like on FM.

Joe

Heard on WIZN last night:

Golden Earring "Twilight Zone"

Sweeper: "Double Shot Weekend"

Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands to Yourself"

Sweeper: Double Shot Weekend

Ozzy Osbourne "Crazy Train"

Sweeper: Double Shot Weekend

Led Zeppelin "D'Yer Maker"

I don't expect the Wizard to break out "Hippy Hippy Shake," but we couldn't get a double shot for Ozzy after running said sweeper before and after it? Is it that hard to program a radio station, folks?

To the Wizard's credit, they did properly resume the feature during the daylight hours. Even heard a Jimi Hendrix song I wasn't familiar with. Good work, guys. Felt really weird hearing the Eagles back on 106.7 again...not something that "really rocks," but then again, there's more to rock than Ozzy and Skynyrd, and I feel like WIZN forgot that for a couple of years before Champ threw in the towel.

Moving on with Burlington radio, holy crap, I heard somebody that wasn't John Garabedian on 95 Triple X at 11:30 on Saturday night. Say what?
