CBC soon to be in jeopardy...

Hmmm...I thought City tv would have gone after the deal, since they are now Rogers owned, and Rogers *did* have a deal to carry Wheel on Omni 1 (CFMT).

By adding the CDN rights to Jeopardy, they would have completed the package.

If Omni didn't want to carry wheel anymore, I thought City would have loved to carry both shows...

Perhaps it's a cost cutting factor, or a simple change of direction in programming for both Rogers and CTV?
If so, what programming is expected to air in place of theese shows on Omni&CTV?

It looks like CBC's 100% Canadian Programming concept just went out of the window with that deal.

That concept has been long out the window and is currently hitchiking to Mexico. The CBC has carried Doctor Who, The Simpsons, Frasier and Arrested Development.

If you want to count British series, there's also Coronation Street, which was part of the CBC schedule since the 1960s.

As for Doctor Who -- the current version is co-produced by the CBC.

The CBC should have some foreign programming. It helps attract advertisers to raise funds for Canadian programming and the network, and it provides a vehicle to promote Canadian shows.

...of picking up "Jeopardy!". "Wheel of Fortune", too. Both beginning September 2008.

Except in Windsor. Wonder what kind of slop they'll have to run?

With Windsor being so close to the border, I don't understand why CBC wouldn't want to sim sub the American station.

I agree...what could possibly bring in better revenue for the CBC than a simsub of the American station?

Is there some sort of contract to carry something else?

Considering that alot of Red Wings fans love watching CBET during hockey season, and that WDIV puts a city grade signal over much of Essex County (with most of the Detroit full power signals having the same), you know why CBET can't show American programming. I imagine them showing Wheel and Jeopardy if WDIV gives up the rights in Fall 2008, but in order for that to happen, all the other Detroit stations would have to pass them up first. Right now, unless its part of their "more localisation" agenda, I don't think the CBC is ready to let CBET compete with the Detroit stations just yet, like they did back in the 1970s and 1980s.

2 words "Border Protection" which is why (except for red wings coverage on HNIC and with SOME exceptions like last year with abc's "THE ONE") you wont see any american shows on CBET

But will that stop CBET from securing Detroit rights to American programming, if need be? I imagine that is still possible -- look at the Fox affiliates for San Diego (XETV) and Brownsville (XHRIO), for instance.

I could see Wheel and Jeopardy landing on WADL before CBET would have a chance to get it.
Sim Sub makes that a moot point.

Except that Simsub rules have been generally more lax in the Windsor area, since many of the Detroit channels are city grade in Essex County. Also, WADL has not even been approved for cable carriage in Windsor, mainly due to its mainly imfomercial and religious schedule.

On the US side, Wheel and Jeopardy would likely be syndexed, but, due to rules on American programming imposed on Windsor stations (mainly CBET these days), that also would be moot, as the CBC would replace Wheel and Jeopardy on CBET with something else.

Also I forgot to point out that While CBET is not allowed (border protection) to do Some american network shows, their competition CHWI 16/60, CKCO 42/13 and CIII 22 do air a big bulk of american daytime and nighttime programs including syndicated shows.
Why they can do it but not CBET..thats a strange explaination indeed.

Maybe because CBET's transmitter is closer to Detroit than the others -- near the town of McGregor (it used to be even closer than that -- at its studios overlooking the Detroit River). That and its signal strength (325kw) meant it was subject to blackouts of most American programming, especially shows on American networks (though last year's belaguered "The One" was an exception).

In the case of CKCO -- channel 42, though it covers Port Huron nicely, has a fair to poor signal over Detroit itself. (Channel 13 is too far from the border to be received in the US.)

CIII's channel 22 transmitter is located near Stephenson, far enough from Detroit (and uses a directional antenna to keep its signal away from Cleveland), but until the mid-1980s, its transmitter was based in a small town of Cottam. Someone mentioned earlier that before the transmitter was moved, its American programming (generally during prime time) was literally blacked out -- all viewers saw was a black screen.

As for CHWI, its channel 16 signal in Wheatley is far enough from Detroit, and its channel 60 signal in Windsor is too weak to cover detroit.

I was going to say something about CBET and WDIV being in the same area and that WHEEL and JEOPARDY! would be blacked out on CBET (as are the U.S. sitcoms) because WDIV carries both game shows from 7 to 8.

As long as the CBC carries both shows in the 5:00 to 6:00 hour (just before local news) I'm satisfied, and they can keep CORONATION STREET at 7:00.

While most stations in Canada air WHEEL followed by JEOPARDY, CJON/NTV does the opposite by airing JEOPARDY first. (And I prefer seeing JEOPARDY first.)

I have yet another question: What happens if both shows have to be pre-empted for sports coverage?

I think WWNY-TV 7 in Watertown also airs them in reverse, or at least they did a few years ago. If WWNY still does that it is likely to prevent CJOH from getting a simsub over them in Kingston.

If both shows are pre-empted for sports coverage, then I guess the only possible way to see them is on the American stations that carry them. Which is bad news if you're in parts of New Brunswick, where none of the American stations carried there carry these shows (they are on WSBK in Boston, which isn't on basic cable there, and I'm not sure about the Maine stations where those are available).

If CBC shows Wheel and Jeopardy at 5 and 5:30, respectively, I wonder how CHEX and CKWS will handle it, since both air local magazine shows at 5:30. Perhaps they'll show Wheel at 5, and then Jeopardy at 7 or 7:30. Or, they'll move Newswatch @ 5:30 to an earlier time to accomodate Jeopardy, perhaps to 1 PM when the CBC O&O stations have the localized Living shows.
