CBS' Dan Mason

CBS' Dan Mason was qouted at R&R convention on 9/28 saying he remains intimately involved in programming. "I want to hear the imaging, I want to hear what they sound like. I may be the only president that reads radio message boards but I want to know what the people are saying about our radio stations," he said. If this is true Mr. Mason then why is there still a smooth jazz void in Market #5 (Dallas-Fort Worth). Please respond. ???

I only chime in 3 or 4 times a year but I wanted to say something as an average joe.

It's time to stop complaining about smooth jazz being off the radio. I liked listening to the station from time to time at home or sometimes we had it on at work but the station is a background noise station. You can easily get those online or on XM becuase you are most likely listening to a place with a internet connection. On the other hand, Movin is more a station that people who listen to radio are going to listen to in a car. It might be cookie-cutter music but when I'm in my car I like cookie-cutter music and when I'm home I'll explore internet radio for stuff that is exciting and new.

As an advertiser with CBS Radio, we stopped advertising on the Oasis before they changed formats because it was a dreary station and we had almost zero business coming from the station. We do advertise with KRLD and as lousy as their ratings show to be, people are listening because we often hear they heard our ads on KRLD. You might not like that this is a for-profit industry but it is, and they are going to put out there what sells the most ads and smooth jazz doesnt fit the bill.

Amen on that ripunleaded. Some stations are bailing now for that same reason. The only draw for that format is its cheapness when satellite delivered. That's the chief selling point. A return on investment because you have no staff to manage and maybe just enough people to tune in to Dave Koz (the Ryan Seacrest of Smooth Jazz radio per Kepler) and the other musician hosts to make a decent profit with no overhead. It is most certainly a very dreary format anymore. And please read up on comments made at the R&R convention. One panelist suggested that they take the "jazz" out of the format's name. That comment is in line with my previous contentions that the word "jazz" violates listener expectations. If they come up with "Smooth 92" as a soft AC with highly recallable instrumentals with those vovals no one would expect to hear what they think is jazz. I think that thought is catching on. I've read and heard similar comments often in the past couple of months about the format. So much so I think the name of the format will change as more and more vocals and AC titles are added. Pussycat Dolls are all the rage in that format right now. As is Kelly Sweet, Babyface, Corinne Bailey Rae, Michael Buble, John Legend, Robin Thicke and more. Des'ree is a recurrent and Chaka Khan has a new one (a remake of course) of "You Belong To Me." With that and instrumental remakes by smooth jazz artists you basically have a NEW format...SMOOTH AC. AC vocals with instrumental remakes. Perfect. Forget Smooth Jazz. It's over. Welcome the NEW Adult Contemporary format...Smooth AC.

Don't overinflate the role board posters play. All he said was that he's interested in what they say. He didn't empower posters to decide formats, control cluster strategies, set budgets, or supercede the role of local management.

Amen. Please, quit beating this dead horse. For the love of GOD.

Amen. Never have so many posts been made about so little. Rush, Russ & Jody being caught in a love triangle woudn't generate as much response.

From CBS radio Dan Mason
"Smooth Jazz is the Preperation H of formats". "Please tell Jeff that posting about it incessantly will not bring it back and the dead horse he was beating is now a fine ottoman at "Stacy's Furniture in Southlake"

My affinity for Jazz radio is not that mysterious in here, but even I can't argue with this. I kept in touch with traffic at the mighty Oasis and ROI was not something regaled from clients. :-X
