Yes...Kevin passed away several years ago.

i remember listening to him on bj 105 back in the 80s; he also worked a friend of my wife's wedding, early 90s, how did he pass? I am 46, he couldn't have been much older than me......he was a very good jock in my humble opinion.

If memory serves, it was cancer.

He used to come to our house every Thanksgiving, but we had been out of touch for a couple of years when we learned of his death. I believe he had moved to either South or North Carolina.

Kevin could be somewhat abrasive and was misunderstood by many who didn't take the time to know him, but he really was a very nice person and a good friend to both me and my wife.

i am real sorry to hear that. I grew up on WLOF and BJ105. listening to those jocks - yourself included old guy when you worked with jeff cohen - was the reason i ran to the college radio station when i signed on at UCF in 1980. Even though i never worked fulltime in radio - newspapers and tv gigs always paid me better - i still dabble in it today. Weekends at Q105, a cbs station in st. pete.

you mentioned your stint at real radio wasn't great.....harry valentine????

Correction, please: I am not Bill Cross. (Not that there's anything wrong with that...)

i am sorry, i am mistaken. did you work at BJ105? i interned at WLOF in 79/80 just before they started simulcasting scott walker in the mornings over there.

If you greatly broaden the definition of "work", maybe yes.

But I also share a marriage with The Artist Formerly Known As Tracey Young.

>Furthermore, the genre of alternative rock is dead (don't really care why)...it simply doesn't get the ratings. I think alternative rock is right where it should be on TKS on weekends and nights.

It's great to know there are minds like this behind the radio stations.

Re: Classic Hits in O-Town

Rocky, thanks for the kind words. Those days at WOTS were some of the most fun I ever had in radio. The free-form 70s format plus an ever-present live audience at Old Town made for a great time. We also hosted the Saturday Night Cruise which continues to this day (without the live broadcasts, unfortunately.)

Kevin Casey was PD while I was there. I never had the chance to know him as well as I would have liked, but I was familiar with his work at BJ105. A true pro. Sadly, he did indeed die of cancer a few years back.

Terry Mason was our GM. I've never met anyone who knew and loved 1950s-60s Oldies as Terry did. Prior to WOTS, Terry was PD of WGTO during it's "Cruisin' Oldies 54" incarnation. He tried to hire me for nights when 'GTO debuted in early 1990, but I didn't take the gig. Six years later, we ended up working together at WOTS. Terry was a good friend as well as a co-worker. Terry lost his life a few days before Christmas, 2005, due to complications from diabetes.

The other airstaffers were Mike Singer, Alan B. Walts, and myself. Plus Imus in the Morning and a midday talk show, hosted by Peter Rocchio. We were small, we were poor, we had a weak signal, but we had a great time "Live on the streets of Old Town!"

We always imagined what we could have done with a gig FM signal. There's no doubt in my mind that CBS could make this work on 105.9. I know it's a longshot, but one can always dream...

I'm guessing the new format (Classic Hits/Oldies or Lite AC) will start tomorrow morning, unless they have a 4th dud image to put on their website.

i remember her well, she was working at magic when i was at real radio for a time.....we were off lee rd back then and not at the maitland compound......oldguy, did you know scott walker at all?

Starman, can you please enlighten us on why alternative rock is not doing so well? Why beat a dead horse it's irrelavent as to why the format doesn't work and subsequent flip of 105.9. I hate when people write obscure post and add nothing to the thread. The History of Rock will run all week at a minimum DJ Mo. They are not launching tomorrow.

They are now playing an alternative format again, I hear Rage Against the Machine.

Be careful if you are hearing it online.....One thing I noticed, at least on Friday is that they fill/cover the stopsets online with Alt. music (as stations that stream are required to do), which is why I was suddenly treated to 3 Days Grace in the middle of the Beatles segment. They haven't changed that category of songs aparrently since the flip.

Didn't you just post that you were too lazy to figure it out?

I always find it strange that there is no real outlet for music that always seems to get a sold out crowd downtown at the Social.

But we won't know as long as the ones in charge just want to regulate it to the weekends (where it got pre-empted this weekend for football). There's a lot of new music out there, but as long as people like you are in charge, terrestial radio will still be bland when it has so much more potential.
