CBS-FM A to Z Promotion

evalmaster said:
As good as KRTH is they unfortunately do not have the variety of WCBS-FM. In the car I find myself flipping between KRTH and The Walrus. KRTH is good on the music mix and the DJ's, walrus has a broader music mix but weak on the personalities. I think there are only about 7 hours a day with a live DJ. At work I stick with the WCBS-FM stream. Last week I heard Bob Shannon playing "Another Brick in the Wall." Not something you would expect here but a welcome addition. Shouldn't a true classic hits station pull from multiple catagories- rock, dance, disco, r and b, top 40, etc.? Maybe I'm lazy, but I dont want to have to keep changing the station to get a good mix-that is where WCBS-FM fits in.

KRTH has a bigger 25-54 share and cume rating than CBS FM, despite being in a market that is considerably more ethnic than NY. The Walrus is doing horribly, particularly in TSL, no doubt due to a library that is frenetic as opposed to being eclectic and the apparent total lack of audience research. XEPRS-FM is 19th in 25-54 in SD, way below the buy depth for campaigns in a market outside the top 10.

You are right about the Walrus. It just seems to not have much of a focus. It seems programming to east coast vs west coast markets is quite different. Look how well WINS and secondarily WCBS-AM do in NY, but KNX and KFWB together probably dont pull the rating of WINS. I think I am getting off topic.
I do like the way WCBS-FM is programmed and I enjoy the mix. Stuff like the A to Z and turntable Tuesdays are a welcome variety on the radio.

I don't see any MediaBase(tm) list on the site. I see some charts and the rolling list of what they are playing. Why would a station use MediaBase as a service to tell them what they know they are already playing?

http://www.mediabase.com/WebLogon/WebLogon.asp

On WCBS site: Far left column, click "recently played" under music heading.
The list is "Powered by Mediabase"...you can go back several days too.
The whole A to Z is still listed there, I believe.

The big all news difference is that LA is about 75% ethnic and immigrant, and that contitutes a much lower usage group for news.

I see it now. Thanks.

You do know that MediaBase is far more than just a music log, I presume. One of the most interesting features in this case is the era map, showing what the year distribution is for any station.

CBS-FM pulled a big-time boner this morning.

I heard "Stars on 45 Beatles Medley" into "Start Me Up" by the Stones, anticipating to hear "Starting Over" - one of the late John Lennon's last hits - when they went right to Maurice Williams' "Stay".

Since the "official" song title of the John Lennon song is "(Just Like) Starting Over", a look at the MediaBase(tm) list shows that the song was played at 12:09 AM on 11/7/2008 Friday.

One could probably nit-pick this (or any other A-Z) list to death looking for "their" song.....while it would be great, they can't play every single that made the Top 5, or even all the #1's in NYC history (or at least from say, late 1950's to early-mid 1980's). Just relax & enjoy, despite what would seem are a few obvious "skipovers".

(Thanks for the) clarification! :D

It is good hearing the list once again, I am just glad they're not doing what sister WOGL in Phila. did and deliberately skip songs but telling the listener what the title/artist of the song being skipped was.

The A to Z has gone OVER one day! It's so enjoyable to hear all the phone calls saying how people will miss it.

For those using Mediabase to check it out, it does not list all the songs. Most, but not all. It tends to miss older or less common songs.

This countdown is even longer than last time. They added in quite a few songs (hundreds, according to the promo) to the July countdown. Almost none were omitted. Very, very few Xmas songs (thankfully.) Only one Sleigh Ride! Here's a sample (adds are bold)

Paint It Black - Rolling Stones (1/1966)
Palisades Park - Freddy Cannon (3/1962)
Paloma Blanca - George Baker Selection (26/1976)
Papa Don't Preach - Madonna (1/1986)
Papa Was A Rolling Stone - Temptations (1/1972)
Papa's Got A Brand New Bag - James Brown (8/1965)
Paperback Writer - Beatles (1/1966)
Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf (39/1978)
Part Time Lover - Stevie Wonder (1/1985)
Patches - Clarence Carter (4/1970)
Patches - Dickey Lee (6/1962)
Peace Train - Cat Stevens (7/1971)
Peaceful Easy Feeling - Eagles (22/1973)
Peg - Steely Dan (11/1978)
Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly (3/1957)
Penny Lane - Beatles (1/1967)
People - Barbara Streisand (5/1964)
People Got To Be Free - Rascals (1/1968)
Personality - Lloyd Price (2/1959)

.....and further down:

Put A Little Love In Your Heart - Jackie DeShannon (4/1968)
Puttin' On the Ritz - Taco (4/1983)
Quarter To Three - Gary US Bonds (1/1961)
Queen of Hearts - Juice Newton (2/1981)
Queen of the Hop - Bobby Darin (9/1958)
Question - Moody Blues (21/1970)

Great to hear all those wonderful STIFFS on the air.

i don't know about anyone else, but me - i'm HAPPY with the way the Countdown happened this time around - i mean, they played a LOT of songs that BLEW ME AWAY!! - a LOT of 50's doowopp and GREAT soul songs that i hadn't heard on the station in YEARS!! so to all the "kvetches" around here; i believe William DeVaughn said it best in 1974 - "Be Thankful for What You've Got" - I am... 8) 8) 8)

Yeah..should wrap up by around midnight NYC time. A very impressive countdown indeed. These are all the hits the listeners really wanted to hear and it's great that a station like CBS-FM is willing to shell out almost nine days of somebody's favorites. Yes! Every single song is somebody's favorite one way or another.

Now only if that "other" station out west would do the same of this magnitude. At least, they were on the right track over Labor Day weekend.

You know that CBS-FM will once again do this sometime early next year. We can always hope!!

KUDOS TO CBS-FM once again. :)

It'll be interesting to see what David Eduardo researches in regards to ratings for the A to Z, this time around.
Should be an increase in the 25-54 and 55+ for this 8 day period once again.

Here's a quote from the other board regarding ratings:

Actually the A-Z back in the summer showed an uptick in 12+ from #3 to #2 and #8 to #7 in 25-54 during the week when you extract the PPM data during the dates it ran.

Can't ask for more than that.

Some of the people on that board think they replaced obscure songs with familiar ones, but the opposite is true.

As I said in another thread, I think was a deliberate decision to take some of the sting off the All Xmas that's on the way. If so, it worked. I'll take a week-plus of great music in exchange for not listening to WCBS for a month. And I'll just come back when the Xmas is over.

And you'll be back just in time for a New Year's Weekend specialty! Probably something great to ring in 2009.

Looks as if we may be in store for another interesting countdown this weekend.
From the Hall of Fame schedule:

Friday, November 14th - Top 5 Flashback Weekend
Saturday, November 15th - Top 5 Flashback Weekend
Sunday, November 16th - Top 5 Flashback Weekend

The A-Z concept - especially this extended A-Z (with over an extra day of music) - is what makes CBS-FM stand out from radio stations across the country. I consider myself lucky to live in an area where this radio station is just a button push away on the FM dial. Although I wasn't able to listen as much as I was the last time around, from what I caught, I loved it. So many amazing songs from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's (and '90's!) got played this week. I'm sad to see it end. But, if they have already run it through twice, I'm sure this is not the last we will hear of CBS-FM's A-Z.

I wonder what, if anything, those "votes" from the website will do.

Nevertheless, two thumbs up, CBS-FM. Amazing job.

Yes, I noticed that too. Very intriguing....

Yes you can. You can increase in audience size. From the two months prior to the A to Z to the weeks of and after it, CBS-FM lost 200,000 cume and the AQH in 25-54 was not up.

Radio does not sell rank per se. Yes, you have to be in the top 10 or 15 stations in a demo to be considered for a buy, but pricing is based on the people delievered, not rank. The change in rank was due to other stations around CBS FM moving, not CBS FM itself.

And the scary part is that not every song from within the top 10 Billboard position of each year were played.

Yeah....shed a tear time :'( about to play the Z's :'(

The 25-54 will likely be down. The 55+, the absolute kiss of death for advertisers, will increase. After such and auspicious start, this station is slowly killing the till-now succesful repositioning of CBS FM as a more modern, under 55 vehicle.
