CBS FM Kill the 80's Play the Fabulous 50's!!

It's the second day, and now everyone is saying what I said after a couple of hours of it being on the air. Too many other stations are playing a lot of what CBS is playing. So what's the point? It's a big disappointment.

I was saying this as soon as rumors broke about the format change. People would whine and complain, just as they did before the original CBS-FM was taken off the air in 2005. It's funny how people romanticized about the station during the two years of Jack, begged and pleaded for CBS-FM to return, and now that it's back, are already beating the loudest drums against the station.

Seriously, people, get a grip. And welcome to 2007.

Sorry to say the 50's music is dead. CBS-FM sounds great and is doing this the one and only way it will work in 2007.

The jocks sound great, and the music will be tight for awhile. So sit back, you armchair programmers and watch.

Or post your great programming resumes and show us how the 50's have been successful on your oldies stations!

JACK did a much better job covering the 80s and they are doing such an awful job playing 80s they may as well drop it and play some 50s.
The station would have been much better if the selections were similiar to JACK, but just add the 50s, 60s and 70s.

btw - the reason people are complaining is because they are saying the station is back. It in fact did not come back and we are being sold a false bill of goods. As someone else said here the playist reeks of mediocrity.

CBS-FM is just fine with me. Yeah, I'll admit I'm not crazy about a lot of 80s pop and AOR, and I wouldn't mind hearing 50s and more 60s music, but there's still a great selection of hits playing on CBS-FM with great jocks and an all-around wonderful presentation. It really doesn't sound that different from the last days of the "old" CBS-FM - if anything, there's a greater selection of music than there was before.

You're way off, though. This isn't about how many 80's selections the station has on its playlist. The whole point of Jack was to have a larger playlist than a "normal" commercial station. The whole point of 80s music on CBS-FM is to play some 80s songs, especially from the early part of the decade, that fit in with the overall "classic hits" sound....think Stray Cats or the Romantics or Billy Joel, that have a bit of an oldies "sound" to them.

And all those people that are complaining should remember that in the decade or so pre-2005, CBS-FM was similar to the way it is now. Almost no 50's, some 80s thrown into the playlist, a "safe," limited playlist. Oh, and let's not forget the way they fired some legendary jocks like Harry Harrison long before the format flip, or all the people that were complaining about Mickey Dolenz in the mornings.

Again, the complaining about CBS-FM ceased on the day the station was "Jacked" in order to complain about the station they miserably referred to as "Jerk FM." Then as soon as "Jerk" FM was taken off the air and oldies came back, those complaints were replaced by the familiar old complaints....not enough 50's, too much 80's, too much disco, too much classic rock, too many ads, where's this DJ, where's that DJ? It's absolutely incredible. I'll say it again: get a grip, people.

During the 90's CBS-FM was playing 80's music and brushed off the 70's. This was when 70's stuff began to come up again in pop culture. I once even heard a song from the 90's on CBS-FM when that song was a current.

As for the 50's? CBS-FM never did any tie-ins for "The Doo-Wop Box" series. Reason? CBS-FM was doing semi-custom albums for Collectables Records. The deal with Collectables prevented CBS-FM from promoting anything on any other label.

Here was a radio station that was rich and lazy, used by CBS as a cash cow with little or nothing to escape the oldies image. No wonder everyone got angry when the station flipped to Jack 25 months ago. I was surprised at the flip but not angry given the trend in the industry.

For the record Harry Harrison retired in March '03, came back for weekends in early '05 and lost his job in the Jack flip.

We don't need to plan about the '50s music because the '60s, '70s and sometime '80s are Classic Hits because CBS FM will not kill the '80s music because now the '50s music is already died.

I feel bad being critical of the 1950's because someday I'll be beggin' stations to play the 90's for me... but I'm afraid that's a passing demo, left the AM satellite formats and weekend features, just as 40's music dissappeared back in the 90's.

WCBS FM is weired. it feels like they will play 2-3 song's in a row that deserve to be on the station music I remeber espencelly being tourtured with 96.7 as well from my parents., WCBS will then 2-3 songs in a row IE: 80's music which is way, way overplayed today and IMHO sucks. the WCBS-FM music wise is too different the it used to be but the having the Jingles back (old Liners etc) I think is way cool. so Its been 50/50 for me.
z100 and KTU. hot 97, power 105.1, WPLJ, WBLI have really sucked this summer music wise. I don't count DJ Spinbad on z100 because it's mix ups of songs I just wish theyed get rid of him and play the damn songs he mixes up in their entirety instead that way Z100 would kick some serious ass.
BRING BACK the 5 0'clock whistle with Cubby and without spinbad... Not gonna happen...

One subtle debunking of these oldies = old people arguments is that Radio Disney has a history of playing songs old enough to be the grandparents of its listenership.

Kids like Chuck Berry. No, really. They do.

So I'm 40, graduated HS in '85, and would, ironically, rather NOT hear the 80's on this station. For me, there's not much that is "classic" about the music I grew up with, in comparison to the classics of the 60's & 70's anyway. I loved the 80's when I was a teenager IN the 80's because it was MY generation's music, but now, that music doesn't do much for me when I compare it to the real classics, or better said, when I hear it played amongst the real classics.

Now conversely, if I'm listening to a "Mix" type station, I enjoy hearing stuff from the 80's. I guess it's because, to me, the "sound" of the 80's music fits in much better with the sound of the 90's and the current tunes. So I'm in the camp of wishing CBS would dump the 80's titles as well.

But that's your own subjective opinion. However, radio doesn't cater to any one person's subjective interests in music. The idea is to play the music that has the widest appeal for the demographic group(s) the station is targeting. CBS may have made a lot of stupid moves, but there's a reason why most major-market FM oldies/classic hit stations from any ownership group have cut out or severely limited the 50s songs in their playlists.

Lots of repeats from the same dayparts as they were yesterday. I'm sure this will get tuned real quick...I hope.

They need to drop the 80s and play what they used to play (50s thru 70s)

80s music just doesnt sound right on there!
