CBS-FM's Seven Day Weekend

This morning, Sue O mentioned Monday afternoon as the time it will conclude.

It's fairly obvious that they're not playing everything everything, but this A-Z has been so fabulous that it's really not worth complaining about *anything*. "On a Carousel" was played in the middle of the night, and I haven't heard that one since I can't remember when. Even the 50's are being well represented.

It feels so good to be part of a radio event that's going to be talked about for a long time to come. Maybe CBS-FM will have it again next year - I hope so! It recalls an era when *everyone* was listening to WABC on the beach, in their cars, during cookouts, etc. That was fun. This is fun!

The A-Z countdown also gives the opportunity for each of us to conduct a spontaneous "life review," as each song elicits memories of all "the people and things that went before." That's *always* interesting. :)

Given the huge splash of the A-Z, I can't imagine how the station is going to top itself for the 1st Aniversary of the Return. They've gotta do something! At any rate, the last few days have been a spectacular lead in.

i am indeed hooked on this extravaganza; and this morning I heard "River deep Mountain High" by the (70s) Supremes(with Jean Terrell taking over Miss Ross' spot) and The Four Tops; what a rush that was!; hope to hear more of Jean's Supremes in the S (Stoned Love)and U (Up The Ladder To The Roof) sections;
great stuff, CBS!

No complaints here either, just a thorough representation of what was popular in year's past in alpha order. I really hope they do this again!! Yes, the memories live on :) :) and so do the 50's!

By the way though, "New York Groove" by Ace Frehley was not played...kinda strange since it's an A to Z from NYC.

The Ariane was installed in line Monday, my first day in. I do not have rights access YET to the processor since the passwords are at Empire and I haven't been able to get access. Next week we should have connectivity from Empire to the studio with the processor so I can make the needed adjustments (remember, some things there are still pointing to 1515 Broadway on the Network). On top of that, the processor is using an old version of software which we will upgrade.

Kudos to Eric Barklow who fixed the HD time alignment issue.

I agree I am not 100% happy with it, but I do feel it is better than it was, but it will be even better still. The changes made to the Ariane yesterday happened around 4pm when we adjusted the stereo imaging. I felt it was over enhanced causing multipath issues, so we tailored it in a little.

All I can say is stay tuned. We are working very hard and in a systematic fashion to take care of everything in order so we don't end up doing a million things at once and lose track of where we are. If you know of my posts on audio processing, you know I am not yet satisfied!!!

Is the sound on the CBS livestream also changed? It sounds a lot 'bigger' now.

I'm not sure if I know that one. If it was from the 50's, well, I come by my experience of the music of that decade from Dan Ingram ("Bom Ching" LOL!), et al., "striking Gold." So, these days, there are a lot of "new" songs I hear on Sunday nights when Don K. is on.

However, when Joe Causi played "New York State of Mind" last night, that was a real moment for me.

BTW, another thing I'm really enjoying is that I have to stop what I'm doing for different songs, or whole segments, and take up my hover position over the radio.

Any semblence of a regular sleep pattern got shot to h3ll this week. That's for sure!

New York Groove is by Ace Frehley, the guitarist from Kiss, from about 1979. One of those low-charting songs that was really popular and then kind of disappeared.

It would have been a great choice - it always reminds me of the roller skating rink when I was a kid. But that was in Boston. I'm sure in NYC it got way more airplay.

....was also surprised they skipped the Grand Funk Loco-Motion. I LOVE when they do all the different covers of songs back to back. The three "Rock and Roll Music" versions (Berry, Beatles, Beach Boys) was a fun example.

Here's two suggestions to try and top it next year (or at Xmas/Memorial Day/Labor Day):

1) Do a longer version (lots of titles they could add in.) They could start on a Friday rather than a Monday.

2) Do it "countdown" style, trying to put the "Earth Angel"s "In The Still of the Night" "Satisfaction" and "American Pie" songs way up high. Have all the oldtime jocks weigh in and try to make an all-time "best" list.
What would be #1. New York New York?

3) Do it alphabetically by artist.
 
I like it just the way it is....and "NY Groove" was a moderate hit in NY,believe it or not:
KISS and the glam rockers were given a hard time by top 40 radio in general

Where was I? LOL!

I MAY know it. There are so many songs I don't know the correct titles to, or any title at all, or never knew who recorded them. But I know these songs like the back of my hand. Incredible, huh?

I'm crazy about that, too! Two other good ones: "On Broadway," both The Drifters' version, and the one by George Benson. (IMO, The Drifters' singer is much better - sorry they don't usually play this one.) Also "One Fine Day," by The Chiffons, then Carole King. Great stuff!

All good suggestions. The station can try them all, as far as I'm concerned. I'd love a longer version of A-Z. We're hooked! We'd follow it to the end, just as we're doing now. It's a perfect summer thing.

I think Jeff Mazzei was the one who played "Up The Ladder To The Roof," during his countdown show, last Sunday night. I love that song, and hadn't heard it for years and years.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE the coundtdown the way it is. Best countdown ever, really. (Not including the XM countdown, which covers 1920s to present day and plays every charting song.)

I was just responding to the "how do they top this next year?" question. :)

I agree with you - i remember when i first heard "Go Away Little Girl" by The Happenings (on CBSFM, naturally...) - up until that point, i had just thought that Donny Osmond had recorded the song and that was it - boy, was i wrong on this one (and many others, apparently!) 8) 8)

CBS-FM's A to Z is one of a kind!

It could be longer though, as Scooty mentioned. A few key songs are being skipped though, even "More Love" by Kim Carnes. That was on Top 40 radio frequently back in the summer of 1980. Even the cheesy, novelty "Pac-Man Fever" from 1982 was missed. Oh well.

Any word on the "Firecracker 400" in L.A.?

I am also enjoying this A To Z weekend on CBSFM too. Some songs I haven't heard in ages or at all I am hearing this weekend. Great Job CBSFM! All's we need now is the reverb back on 101.1FM. Now let's get 98.3 WTRY here in Albany NY to do something this good as well and circulate all those hits that are good and they never play from the 50's to the 80's. Too bad Brian Thomas couldn't help WTRY with their on air presentation with his expertise.

Yes, I certainly DID! And I've been SO TEMPTED to call the station to ask for Martha Wash's "Strike It Up!" LOL!
 
I am loving every minute of the A-Z countdown. As far as "Mambo #5" goes, back in the day part of the song used to be played on Bob Shannon's Friday show at 5PM for a while.

Overnight I heard "On Top of Spaghetti" (also heard it on Jeff Mazzei's 1963 countdown show months ago).
Just heard The Tremeloes "Silence Is Golden" - wow! And now Lenny Welch - doesn't get much better than this.

I haven't listened to the radio so much in ages.

Huge specialties like this will bring alot of infrequent radio listeners back again, hopefully keeping them and boost ratings.
People are tired of the usual monotony heard all week long and need to be exposed to huge varieties like this every so often. Hopefully and I believe it is, a sign of changes to most classic hits stations to bring back listeners!!

CBS-FM RULES! :) ;)
