CBS-FM's Seven Day Weekend

This WCBS FM A to Z Countdown has been one word:A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! Peace Dr Johnny P LoveTrain 8)

I can't even imagine what CBS's ratings would be if done on the web. Except for sleep and work I've been glued to the A-Z countdown all week too. There's no doubt for whatever reason they aren't playing some bonified hits. I was surprised to see they left Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto out of the S's, but then again they've played a lot of stuff that's been left in the cobwebs. I'm a regular listener to WCBS-FM on the web, oddly enough it sounds like they are also NOT running that junk web-based advertising, but local ads (even though I realize most are national level). Their sales department is also having a bonanza week!
Sirius Satellite used to carry WSM, what would be really great is if they carried WCBS-FM. In spite of commercials, I'd still be willing to pay Sirius just to hear WCBS-FM on one of their channels.

After almost a week of hearing the A-Z countdown, I have to say that I haven't been this excited listening to the radio since CBS-FM returned almost a year ago. I took a look at some of the other A-Z countdowns going on this weekend - one on Sunny 105.9 WOCL/Orlando, another on WODS/Boston, and finally, the one airing on KLUV in Dallas. Hands down, CBS-FM wins with their spectacular variety and amazing song list. While WODS had the opportunity to repeat their countdown THREE times (albeit with a slightly different mix of songs each time), CBS-FM could only do theirs ONCE, and I liked it that way.

This HAS to become a special feature each year during the week of 4th of July with the exact same list of songs (if it's changed in any way, hopefully it will be through addition of titles, rather than the removal of songs). Even some friends and family members of mine who regularly listen to LITE or Q104 couldn't resist listening to the A-Z countdown on 101.1.

For the first time in a while, I tuned out CBS-FM while there was a commercial playing this morning and changed to Lite-fm, but I was rightly punished with David Cook's "Time of My Life," so I quickly changed back to CBS-FM for another great set of songs. With four decades (plus "Game of Love," "Mambo #5" and "Smooth") of variety, this special feature is probably the best I have heard on the radio in a long, long time. Thanks so much CBS-FM.

This A-Z weekend is perfect. I hope they put this music on regular basis. There is lot of music in the CBS library so why don't they play that on normal days? This music is made to play it and not to set this music 'on hold' only for this A-Z weekend. When everything is back to normal you hear the same songs everytime. With this A-Z weekend you don't hear the same song twice offcourse and you never know what's next and that's briljant! So again, I hope they remain this 'format' after this weekend.

I wonder if WCBS will post their A to Z on wcbsfm.com like KLUV(Dallas TX) will be doing on their's Monday? Peace Dr Johnny P LoveTrain 8)

Being a current Subscriber to Sirius I would love to see this done. It would be one of the best moves by them. A Sirius Satalite Radio Exclusive.

I'm happy to report they did play two versions of Sukiyaki, which is hardly ever played these days. They did the original by Kyu Sakamoto, and then the Taste Of Honey English remake.

If you're looking at either the WCBS website or Yes.com, both of them leave out songs that make the air....sometimes different songs!

....In the context of LOVING this countdown, I do want to say that chopping off Stairway To Heaven at about 3 minutes in was a mistake. If you're gonna play it, you gotta play the whole thing! But....minor complaint.

They did the same thing with Paradise by the Dashboard Light...but yes a minor complaint, the countdown has been great. :)

I had no idea CBS-FM moved in with K-Rock.

Opie & Anthony have started a fued with CBS. They were bitter that they lost their green room when the station moved in. It's even to the point where Norton ran down the hallway into the CBS studio and screamed "WHO GIVES A CRAP?!!" and slammed the door on a stunned jock.

They said they were blaring their A to Z program while O&A were trying to prep their show.

First of all, that's TOTALLY irrelevant to this thread, unless I'm missing something... ;)

Secondly, this thing happened like TWO weeks back - I saw it on another board - I just think it's awful on O&A's part, but then again, they're just jealous of CBSFM's success... ;) (although I do remember one interesting incident on "that day" ;) when one of O&A's people asked both me and my friend some REAL NASTY questions about some of the guys the station had back then - both my friend and i were shocked - we don't DO nasty....) 8)

and thirdly, I can't believe the A-Z weekend is ALMOST OVER!! :( But i gotta tell you - it's been SO GREAT...all i'm thinking now is that the station's celebrating the ONE-YEAR anniversary of its rebirth on July 12 - how are they going to top this past week??

The whole "feuding DJs" thing is so played. Zzzzzz

Back to the A to Z.....I'd like to encourage the staff at WCBS to cook up some more cool stuff in the future. And please call up Jhani Kaye in L.A. and tell him to do similar things out here on KRTH.

By the way, anyone notice that "Roundabout" was on vinyl? You could hear the pops and clicks. They could obviously get a digital copy in a snap, so that's a nice touch to throw on some vinyl here and there. Perhaps they needed a short version....

Well, each market has its ups and downs. KRTH is still a great, legendary station, although I must say I do prefer CBS-FM, but I'm probably biased. I've listened to KRTH a couple of times, and it's an enjoyable, upbeat station. But, I've read many comments similar to yours about KRTH's playlists and "themed weekends," which wind up to be, basically, their playlist again. Although, CBS-FM's themed weekends (outside of the major specialty features like this A-Z) usually only spotlight one song per hour. So, essentially, CBS-FM does a similar thing. I see this month we can expect a "Class Reunion Weekend" on the station as well as "Christmas in July." I can see the threads now about Christmas music in July...

I'm sure the programming department at CBS-FM still has a lot up their sleeves. It's really great to know what an amazing staff 101.1 has not only on the air, but behind the scenes, and apparently, now in the engineering department! ;)

Nevertheless, I envy Southern California for having an AC station like KOST, while we're stuck with WLTW. If I'm in the mood for true "Lite" music, I stream the KOST.

Rick Stacy just mentioned that he played "Time" from the Alan Parsons project on vinyl. It's amazing that I survived on Lite-fm, WMGQ, and Fresh (and of course, a healthy dose of my I-Pod and CDs) for two years while 101.1 was JACK. Looking back, I don't know how I did it! Regardless, it's great to have CBS-FM back and much better than ever before.

Like I said, I'm waiting for CBSFM to announce their plans for the 1st anniversary of its rebirth.... 8)

What KRTH does well is stick to a "sound." No Tears for Fears, Madonna, or Kenny Rogers. They give extra spins to Beach Boys, Beatles and things like Suavecito and LA hits like Viva Tirado. It has a real SoCal sound.

But bottom line they are too repetitive with the My Girls and Grazing In the Grasses. They also have almost zero pre-64. And the DJs are really scripted - I think except for the great Charlie Tuna they read from cue cards.

Recently they had what was, until the CBS-FM A to Z, the greatest countdown I'd heard, the Top 1001 of all time. They've done two good weekends in the past few years: summer hits (awesome!) and no-repeat weekend. But generally, their weekends are atrocious. My favorite is "Parade Of Hits." I still don't know what a "parade of hits" is, or how it differs from normal K-Earth music.

Anyway, they're owned by the same company, so maybe they'll share ideas. I also noticed two other LA stations doing some pretty out of the box 4th of July specials, so perhaps this is a PPM related trend to hook listeners. If so, hooray!

Yeah, I heard that too! I'm thinking..ok they need to finish by Monday night, so let's save an extra 4 minutes. No, they should have played the whole song...I mean, would you cut "American Pie" or "Hey Jude" at 3.5 minutes? But like you said..a very minor issue.

This whole countdown is nothing short of spectacular, to say the least (as I'm hearing TSOP). Boy, there are tons of S and T songs! I guess we can all predict what the X song will be, there's only one that I'm aware of that did well on the charts, from late 1980.

CBS-FM needs to begin a tradition; by doing this EVERY year, and even adding some songs. MORE KUDOS TO CBS-FM :)

I wonder what comprised the top 25 on the Firecracker 400 in L.A.?? Let me guess..songs that we hear 10 times a week anyways :( ???

CBS-FM is #1 and always will be!

CBS-FM and KRTH are owned by the same company and may share ideas, but it's doubtful the PD's would implement them as a whole because what may be a walk-off home run in NYC may only be a single in LA, and vice-versa. It's been noted before on these boards that NYC and LA are such different markets with different attitudes, that whole East Coast-West Coast thing. KRTH sounds really buttoned-down. Yes, it's smooth, professional and tight, but rather bland to my taste. I'm wired to an east coast schematic.

CBS-FM, on the other hand, has a certain unpredictability about it, especially where the jocks are concerned. You get the back sell-front sell sometimes and occasionally you hear a Lettermen-esque comment between the lines. Sure, it could be the "planned spontaneity" thing for all we know, but it's very New York.

Glad to read you're enjoying the weekend, even if it's from a bunch of geeked-out radio heads. For once there seems to be some contentment about CBS-FM (except for those abridged versions of Paradise, etc., which in my estimation should be played in their entirety.)

Hey, radio USED to be this way, playing right off the 45's. A bit of flashback to the past...why not, during an A to Z, right? Also I've heard those 45's pops on Mazzei's Sunday Night countdowns, stuff so obscure, probably not even available as digital copies.

Yeah, love to see KRTH do the same (It'll be a shocker!!)

How about CBS-FM playing EVERY #1 song in chronological order (as they peaked) from 1955 onward..that would be interesting!

Totally irrelevant to the thread? Isn't this about the whole A to Z weekend? and what it encompasses both directly and indirectly? If you're missing something, you should try reading the title before you post.

...and the second point is no. this incident occurred on July 1st. You can read about it here. http://www.923krock.com/pages/1420414.php#tues
