CBS News Radio "Dissolved"

What the commentor ignores is that Audacy was the final distributor of CBS News Radio. They had a contract with CBS, and CBS pulled the plug. Audacy had skin in this game. Audacy's KCBS was still airing World News Roundup when CBS had a technical problem and the show didn't air. Whoops! So perhaps some staffers left CBS News before the final day.

One other thing I find interesting is that there was very little advance notice or explanation on the all-news stations Audacy acquired from CBS. They just switched to ABC. The following statement may upset some people, but this may be indicative of the importance of radio network affiliations for the station’s overall presentation…in other words, one network could be substituted for another and the majority of listeners are unlikely to notice. KCBS will still be KCBS even if the TOH now says “ABC”.

As someone interested in radio history, I also wish the stations had stuck with CBS until the end. I think the transition would’ve been a little cleaner if stations waited until the start of a new day to go to a new network. For Pacific and Mountain time zone stations, that might have been impractical, since the shutdown revolved around New York schedules. I also see the point in just making the switch and getting on with it.

All that said, I like the way KGLO in Mason City, Iowa handled it: CBS News Radio at 12 noon, followed by the retrospective program for the rest of the hour, then ABC News at 1 pm. That was a classy way to do it.

Because KCBS and all the other stations are more than just the TOH news. They built that brand with 24/7 local coverage. The TOH news just augmented that. Some of these stations have been doing local news for 60 years. That's a long time too.

If you read the announcements on the local websites, the Audacy stations were concerned that listeners would think the station was changing format. They said at that time two months ago that the network may change, but the station's commitment to local news doesn't. I think that was all that needed to be said.

If I recall correctly, KCBS didn’t say anything about it at all, except just before the actual changeover.

Here's a commentary about Audacy stations flipping to ABC News before the CBS signoff.

True and also the only way for people in the rest of the country to find the finale of CBS Radio News was through podcasts or in some cases find them through YouTube search of that. But then again when Bari Weiss announced that CBS is making cuts and shutting down CBS Radio News, Audacy Market Managers and their staff had to mention that their stations are not shutting down even though they were at one time owned by CBS Radio until a decade ago when Audacy took over.

Have any CBS News affiliates outside of WSM and KDAL switched to NBC News Radio?
Some of the Civic Media stations from Wisconsin (WAUK, WXCO, WFHR, WRJN, WRPN, WCFW HD2), WMPL Hancock, MI, and WALL Middletown, NY have switched to NBC News Radio. KELY Ely, NV is using the unbranded version, which has the same anchors without the NBC mentions.

I suppose CBS will be burying all the CBS Radio branding so nobody can license it, like iHeart does with NBC?

It's really sad to see (hear?) it go. I've been listening for many years (I also listened to ABC on KGO back when it was worth listening to, so hearing the ABC sounder does make me feel a bit nostalgic, softening the blow somewhat).

Not that it's gone, I suppose we have no choice but to move on.

RIP, CBS Radio News (1927-2026).

We'll miss you 😢

True and its not shocking to see why Audacy owned stations had to change affiliations one day before CBS Radio News shut down and some of it was to stop the big rumor that local all news or News/talk affiliates were shutting down even though Audacy itself never announced a shutdown to their affiliates.

Just caught a typo in my last post: Not should've been now. However, you all seem to have gotten my point nevertheless, I think.

Anyway, I never heard any rumors of KCBS shutting down, thankfully.

I think what iHeart is doing is making the NBC and 24/7 services similar and go to the market to see what the consumer actually wants. I’m glad there is the NBC News Radio 24/7 website which shows how it works. Again they’re just licensing the name for their produced newscasts.

It's a pretty simple set up for NBC Radio News and iHeart's 24/7 News.

If you are an NBC affiliate, your newscast starts with the NBC sounder and I assume a voice saying "NBC Radio News." Then we hear the anchor give his/her name and starts the lead story.

If you are a 24/7 affiliate, this is a white label service. Nobody ever says "24/7" or "iHeart." The newscast simply begins with anchor saying his/her own name and starting the lead story.

I know the news department is based in the Phoenix area. I suppose some anchors work from there but others may work from their home or at an iHeart studio in other cities.
