CBS not broadcasting Thanksgiving Day Parade

CBS has finally decided to pull the plug on broadcasting the [Macy*s] Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is another change that I have seen coming for a long time. I'm surprised they didn't stop sooner. It didn't even make any sense for them to broadcast it, as I don't know anyone who actually watched it on CBS. I always watched on the official broadcast partner, NBC. It was the exact same parade, they just weren't allowed to say Macy*s. I understand it wasn't always the exact same parade, but eventually it was, and there was no point in broadcasting it.

However, because CBS isn't broadcasting the Thanksgiving Day Parade, for the first time ever, they're actually going to be broadcasting The Price is Right on Thanksgiving. That show has been on for 53 years now, but it has never been on on Thanksgiving. Actually, the first year that Drew Carey hosted, they had a TPIR marathon from 12:30-3:30pm, but I think it was all repeats. It's gonna be a repeat this year too, but it's gonna feel weird watching The Price is Right on Thanksgiving at all, first-run or repeat.

My take is this has to do with lack of retail advertising. When they look at the expense of doing a live event, compared to just doing regular programming, they make more money with regular programming. Just technically, with union crews, all the overhead shots, all the video trucks, all the co-ordination, we're talking a lot of expense. Without the Macy's branding & sponsorship dollars, it's simply not worth doing. If there was money, they might look at other similar parades around the country. But there's no money.

Instead, CBS will focus on sports, with the annual Thanksgiving Day NFL game. That's where the money is. Not parades.

Let's not gloss over that union crews probably means premium holiday wages for Thanksgiving Day work. Double time, maybe triple time? A lot of expense if Macy's and other retailers won't even open their wallets to advertise, "official" or not.

I thought it was always NBC?

This is sad. As a kid I loved the NBC broadcast, but I enjoyed the CBS broadcast as I got older. It seemed to be more about the parade and not the lip-synching singers. And they would go to musical performances (pre-recorded at Broadway venues) here and there.
My guess is the ratings just weren't there - and football is more profitable.

NBC's parade broadcast usually cracks the top 100 telecasts of the year. HUT levels are high on Thankgiving morning and really, what else is there to watch?

Which is why I watched on CBS. NBC has too much Broadway and not enough parade.
Agreed! Why do we watch the Macy's Parade? To see the balloons!

But with all the paid Broadway and musical performances, many of the balloons only get 20 or 30 seconds each. And I guess the anchors have always done awkward pre-written commentary on the balloon and float characters. (Sometimes I cringe at their "jokes.") Ever notice the performers get thunderous applause at the end of their routines? But as we look at the crowds behind them, nobody is applauding. Is it right to artificially sweeten the audience response on a live televised show?

According to Wikipedia, the televised coverage goes back to 1953, only a few years after NBC television had begun a regular network schedule. I think that was 1949. I wonder if anyone saved those early live 1950s parades to compare to today's version? The parade itself began in 1924, 29 years before TV got involved.

So well, we like to thank everybody for your enjoyment of The Thanksgiving Day Parade on CBS. After 53 years, The Thanksgiving Parade ceased airing broadcast on CBS.

So the only one single foot telecast of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade left, is on NBC (on Telemundo too) and nothing else.

So thank you CBS.

Even so, since CBS has the early game this year, don't expect TPIR to be shown in its usual morning time slot (If at all in MANY parts of the country) as (In the case of Denver) KCNC has a 9:00 AM newscast

That means unless they confine the newscast only to the app there won't be a 9:00 AM newscast as it will be pre-empted by TPIR & TPIR itself will not be seen in Denver at 10:00 AM as it will be pre-empted by The NFL Today & the game itself

The CBS telecast was also the only way to watch the Macy's parade in Detroit. WDIV-4, the NBC affiliate, televises the Detroit parade, billed as "America's Thanksgiving Parade," which also airs in some other markets.

NBC's local station (W2XBS) televised it in 1939; CBS put it on network TV in 1949; NBC became the official broadcaster in 1953.

Ooookkkk, plenty of things air on only one outlet. This isn’t exactly a major change.
