CBS Picking Up The New Version Of Hawaii Five-O

Is this true? Heard from a friend, that CBS gave it the green light. And Grace Park from Battlestar Galactica will play 'Kono'. A role previously played by the actor Zulu.. Who would they cast as McGarrett's arch enemy 'Wofat'?

The best part of the old "Hawaii 5-0" was the intro and theme. They should be able to improve on that but the rest will likely be a comicfest snoozer like NCIS: L.A.

As a loyal fan of the original, this is NOT good news. In my view they can only screw it up (much as Hollywood does every time they mangle old shows I used to like before bringing them to the big screen).

I bet not even the theme song survives in a recognizable form. The fact that they've chosen a female to play Kono is your first give away. Wo Fat will be on Nutrisystem and no longer Chinese. And I don't even want to think about what they're going to do to McGarrett.

The hair! OMG!!! Don't screw up the hair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is Dan-o still alive? Maybe he needs a job and can put on a few pounds to sub for Kono Zulu.

For one, James MacArthur is still alive at age 72.

And if you're wondering, the producers does plan to awknowlege the new Steve McGarrett as the son of the original and the new Chin Ho Kelly as the original's protege.

"Chin Ho Kelly"? Not a nice name. Times have changed.

If you're talking about re-cycled TV series ideas, this is actually one of the better ones. CBS is very big these days on slick cinematography and location (Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, etc.). All the producers have to do is introduce a lot of picturesque Hawaiian scenery along with all new characters who work for the fictional state police agency (sorry, no McGarrett Jr. on Dan-O Jr.) and insert a lot of police procedural CSI-type stuff, and presto = new series with a good chance of success.

Make him an Aussie? (The new McGarrett, Alex O'Loughlin, is Australian.)

Could be even more worse -- McGarrett could've been black (like they did with Kojak).

I hear 'ya. Hollywood has an uncanny way of butchering beloved TV shows when they transfer them to the big screen. They're convinced that noisy effects will successfully mask a hack, paint-by-numbers (or software) script. For me, only "The Fugitive" was a worthy remake of the series. In fact, I thought the movie was better than the show.

From what I was told by someone who worked at CBS back in the day, a USC film student actually cut together the open for the original series. It certainly was innovative for its time.

And the Hawaii 5-0 theme was great. The Ventures did a wonderful, faithful version of it using some of the original studio musicians.

Of course, the term "lighten up" was just not part of McGarrett's vocabulary. "Whaddaya mean, I am lightening up. I'm wearing this Hawaiian shirt, aren't I." Hawaii 5-0 was a great show and still holds up in re-runs. We'll see what the new one looks like. I'll give it a chance.

I'll give the new show a chance. If they really want the new show, to be like the original. Despite any 'tweaking' they've done.
They MUST bring back 'Wofat'! Wofat is to Steve McGarrett, As Lex Luthor is to Superman. Pure Evil. A sinister criminal..
If they do it correctly, bringing 'Wofat' back would prove to be a win, win! Khiegh Dhiegh, played him well. Right up to the
last episode in 1980, when McGarrett finally caught him. Btw, watch the final episode from 1980. Priceless dialogue between
McGarrett & Wofat, at the end..

A few other things I hope to see in the new version, but probably won't happen.

The Character 'Duke' was a member of HPD & wore a uniform, until he got promoted, & joined Five-O f/t in 1977. Herman Wedemeyer
played him. Hopefully his character returns.

McGarrett always drove a Black Mercury. Hopefully that will continue. And Ford will once again provide the Five-O cars...
But please no Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, or Lincoln Town Car for McGarrett..

Keep the production of the show in Hawaii. That would be great!

Huh??? What exactly do you mean? Why is race important here?

I understand how you feel about Wo Fat, but if it happens they won't make him a rouge spy for the Chinese government. Probably more like a leader of a gang or syndicate and young looking (think Jet Li-type). After all this will be more of a crime drama with less international intrigue.

I'm surprised that no one brought The Vashons, another thorn in Five-O's side in the original. I have a feeling they'll do something about that one, too.

and they just HAVE to have some cast-against-type, highly unlikely guest stars
as bad guys (like Andy Griffith and Buddy Ebsen)

interesting trivia fact.....Khiegh Dhiegh was not the least bit Chinese! He was a Brit of Turkish ancestry.
Regardless, he was born to play that part.

I can't remember where I read the article. But a devoted fan of the original series. Purchased Steve McGarrett's 1974 Black Mercury after the show
wrapped in 1980. It was an interesting article. When Five-O ended. Magnum PI was starting up its production. And the car just sat around
collecting dust. Until this guy (fan) started looking for it. And ultimately purchased it.

They are. The pilot was filmed in Honolulu, the series begins pre-production there in June, with filming to commence in July.
