CBS Radio Future?

SDradio.net mentioned CBS Radio would not exist 9 months from now. Does anyone have any details on this? Should the staff be concerned?

They may be talking specifically about CBS in San Diego, because CBS Radio in general is fine, with great cash flow in most markets. But CBS announced a year ago it would be selling off some smaller markets. They have already sold Denver and Portland. It was interesting that after they sold Portland, the stock made a pretty strong jump.

I believe CBS only owns two stations in San Diego. That's probably the kind of market that should be easy to sell. The questions are (1) To whom, and (2) For how much. None of the conventional operators are in buy-mode. But I wouldn't be surprised if the stations in SD are on the market. However, there's very little chance that CBS will completely dump radio.

How about the company that bought CBS/Portland, Larry Wilson's Alpha Broadcasting. Maybe they will buy CBS/San Diego?

And in another topic, someone said Jeff and Jer had invested in Alpha - hmmmmmmm......

That would be very ideal and unique for a market of San Diego's size, for Jeff & Jer to own a stake, in a radio station they do a morning show at (job security!). I would be guessing 103.7, if CBS sold it to Alpha (I can't see them at KYXY...No way!).

Someone told me this morning that only half of the J&J is an investor - can't recall if it's J or J.

I could see them going on KYXY, but honestly the studios in that building are not conducive to the kind of show they do, so I think they first sign that J&J might be going to there would be when the carpenters start remodeling studios.

They can work in a glorified closet if they need to. CBS isn't about to build new studios, but there's plenty of moving and modifying they could do in their small space. My bet is on Mr. B.

Are they actually that humble?

I wouldn't know, but ego has nothing to do with how little space is actually needed to put a signal on the air. The KYXY buildiing is pretty cramped, but for four hours a day you could shoe horn J&J in there with some creative engineering.

I worked in that building and know well it is a very tight fit: but with few exceptions, radio morning shows had gotten to the point where they felt entitled to something better than what mere non-morning DJ's had (maybe it's something in the water at the Morning Show Boot Camp). Every third rate jock thought they deserved a producer, a helper boy, an intern and two sidekicks, plus a studio that would give each of them their own mike, plus enough mikes to accommodate 50 Cent and his whole posse when they just happened to drop in.

Of course the Decline and Fall of the radio bidness has made many jocks happy to find a mike just for them but there have to be a few prima donnas who haven't had the chance to be humbled by the new realties.

Remember Bob, that it would be a cake walk to operate any show, including automation and spot breaks, from any location in the world with the technology that exists today. J&J could be in East Armpit and do San Diego mornings just like they were there, even without someone on site to push buttons. Space is no issue whatsoever.

True - during my last 18 months or so with The Planet morning show, I worked from my home in Oceanside and actually had a much better setup than when I worked at the studios in Kearny Mesa.

Bob had better traffic too. I remember him having fun with Benny as well. What ever happened to the Benny? Is he calling fights for HBO / Showtime?

I think he had that operation and became Laura Cain.

Right as usual Bob. I was talking to a former Z-90 jock from the Victor Diaz era. He wound up in Texas and I was appalled to hear that he does the morning show, plus all of the extra prep and production, remotes etc., etc., $9.00/hr! What a sad sate of affairs. Salud!

I'm frankly surprised that CBS hasn't sold off the San Diego stations long ere now. It's no secret they've been "on offer" for at least the last two years, maybe longer.

Bob is right - the Linda Vista studios are cramped as it is. Remember they were built for just one station in the '70s... having two running in there was always a stretch, but a high-profile ensemble morning show in there would be like trying to stuff Polish Sausage through a funnel.

Unless they kicked the sales weasels out of the basement... ;D

Ola Lupita! Is that Mark? I know he wanted to be on mike so bad that he went to work as police dispatcher after getting canned from Victor's country station.
