CBS Radio Network to Shut Down

CBS, now under Paramount ownership, has announced it will be shuttering CBS News Radio after May 22. The network has been in business for approximately 100 years.

While much has been made of the political bent of CBS-TV since the acquisition by Paramount and installation of Bari Weiss as Editor-in-Chief, this appears to be a purely economic decision.

Locally, this affects WSB, which carries CBS News during the overnight hours and reports from CBS although the station should have no problem replacing these elements.

I have not heard anything from ABC Radio on WSB in the last few years. They did have both ABC and CBS. Do they still have the ABC affiliation?

The choices I can think of are:
  • ABC
  • NBC
  • AP
  • Fox
I know there are others, but these are the big ones. NBC is strange because they did not have a radio division and then they did. I do not know much about it.

Anyway, the three of these that run commercials would be happy to have WSB as an affiliate.

Is Peter Greenberg’s travel program that they air on the weekend going away? I believe it’s produced by CBS News and but it’s also a podcast.

Also, what’s WSB’s relationship with CNN? I know CNN shut down their radio network several years ago but WSB occasionally airs their live audio during breaking news.

NBC doesn't have a radio division. They have a branding division. So they did a branding deal with iHeart's 24/7 news service. The news is staffed by iHeart employees, using the NBC brand.
Yes, NBC Radio news is owned and produced by iHeart, but I was under the impression that NBC talent is heard on the service. That was the case, but perhaps it changed in recent years.

I thought Cumulus/Westwood One had all of the old CBS Radio properties.

At one time, they did. Somewhere in the 90s. CBS had a management deal with Westwood One, and they combined their networks under one banner. Westwood One distributed CBS News for about 15 years or so. Then the distribution shifted to Skyview. Then last fall it went to Audacy.

Are you talking about the former CBS-owned stations? They were sold to Entercom, whose name changed to Audacy. But that has nothing to do with the CBS radio network.
I was referring to the content/networks, not the stations which went to Entercom/Audacy.

I have heard CBS reporters and special reports on WSB. I wonder who will take their place.

This may have been mentioned already, but WSB is also affiliated with ABC News Radio, so likely they will use more ABC audio. I see lots of national and international stories on their website from AP. They are also affiliated with Bloomberg (probably for business news) and they can access audio from WSB-TV.

I am not sure they still carry the ABC affiliation. It was there and when breaking news happened they went to ABC even though CBS was their TOH choice. I have not heard an ABC reporter in a couple of years. We hear CBS and Bloomberg reporters. That does not mean WSB cannot get an ABC affiliation. The whole thing is ucrious.

As I said, they also have Associated Press.

A lot of conservative talkers In the south run Fox News as their primary news source. WGAC-AM/FM in Augusta comes to mind. Not sure how that would work here since WAGA-TV is O&O by Fox.

Honestly I've always thought that ABC News makes the most sense because of WSB-TV. I guess we shall see.

WSB Radio replaced ABC with CBS many years ago. WYAY was ABC's Atlanta affiliate from 2010 to about 2013, I don't think any Atlanta station has the ABC affiliation today. I don't think any Atlanta station is carrying Fox right now, either. So I guess either of those are a possibility if WSB wants to keep a network affiliation (does AP Audio still do newscasts?)
While WSB only uses bits of CBS sound inserted into its local newscasts during the day and evening, it plays the CBS hourlies overnight, so presumably it has three choices: pick up one of the other networks, hire more staff for overnight newscasts, or give up on live overnight news.

I am informed that AP audio still does newscasts, so that would be among the possibilities.

It has been posted elsewhere that AP is done on a cash basis, not barter like the others.
