CBS SPORTS in TAMPA is BOMBING!!!

CBS sports station is GOD AWFUL!!!!!

In what way is it "GOOD AWFUL?" What do you believe should be done to make an improvement in the CBS Tampa sports stations? I haven't listened, so in all fairness, I'm not in a position to render an opinion either way.

stop using wdae's rejects as talent....advertisers hate the station...and the GM and PD are not from this MKT...dont worry they will be music in a year!...i have covered sportstalk and tv stuff for over 25 years..longway to go

Change formats.

To what? The only format that has ever performed well on 98.7 is urban hit when it was WLLD. Smooth jazz and AC did not do very well at all. So, what viable format do you recommend that may perform better than sports and its previously failed formats?

They Hired out of MKTS GM and a PD who comes from Detroit.......All wdae's rejects and now jim lighthall with justin....terrible shows and jim rome is getting killed by jay mohr and my friends at premiere radio in sherman oaks say its just not tampa that rome is being beat in.

Yeah, urban has been the only thing that has worked... so far...

IIRC, before Wild it was WISP, playing easy listening and light jazz. That sucked, then Wild came on and shook everything up by stunting as a "pirate" station. Then after a great run as Wild, they flipped with WSJT... ok lets stop right there. When the smooth jazz format flipped to 98.7 the writing was already on the wall, staff was getting fired, everything was running on auto pilot, and the station was an absolute shell of it's former self. Then we got Play 98.7, which might as well have used the slogan, "Are you Black? Don't even bother tuning in!" or "We don't play n***** music!" They probably spent several hundred thousand dollars on billboards, and still nobody listened, not even the KKK. Now we have FM sports... people still aren't listening. I have had yet another brokered show host on 98.7 tell me that they never get any calls.

The problem isn't the signal, it's the format and the content. Flip that baby to something people actually will spend some time listening to and watch what happens. I'm sure I'll get the same lecture about how CBS isn't going to drop sports because they don't want to pay the music licensing fees, but the bottom line is, nobody's listening. If the numbers don't improve in a hurry, expect to see something else on 98.7 in the near future.

All excellent points; however, do you have any particular format in mind that you believe will attract a specific desired target demo? And what demo would you target? I ask because, although you stated the signal isn't the only problem, it is a very real issue for 98.7, so any format will be a challenge and will have to be unique and niche enough that a listener will actually tune in and listen over any of the other bigger signals in the metro where reception is less of a problem.

Several points in no particular order:

Any talk format talks time to grow.

Big chains love cookie-cutter formats and if there's a mistake that I would most crtiicize 98,7 for it's using the cookie cutter and filling it with out of market talent in the market. (I don't consider Chris Dingman out of market, but he is a relative rookie) But parachuting an out of market guy in as main host along with the designated "cute chick" co-host definitely didn't work for the short-term.

Jim Rome in the mid-day at least gave them something to give them sort of sort market presence.

When it comes to numbers remember that we only see the 6+, which doesn't begin to tell the real story about what's going on with ratings (and sales).

I am not consistently hearing anything to keep me tuned in. When I turn on Justin I'm hearing canned bits like "overrated/underrated". I suspect its part of the CBS cookie cutter to use those kinds of set pieces, but when I turn on a sports station I expect to hear sports and preferably LOCAL sports. I also don't like hearing about the start of Bucs training camp when the Rays are the hottest team in baseball. Yeah, this is a sports town, but I don't want to hear a bunch of wankery about who's goigg to be on the Bucs defensive line when the Bucs are on the verge of going into first place.

There also is a condescending attitude, especially from Justin. (Sorry Justin) But I really don't appreciate having my opinios casually dismissed when I call and try to engage on whatever topic.

Not having the Rays or Bucs is a problem, but they really got hurt when both the USF football and basketball teams tanked. They're both going to be better this year and that will help some. How much? Who knows.

OBSOLUTELY. Local is always better than out-of-market every time. I have not listened to 98.7 personally, either OTA or online; so, as previously stated, I was attempting to be fair. As a sports station, I agree that local talk host during drive time and local teams PBP in season will make a vast improvement.

Ok, I would stray away from a niche format. I'm sure everyone is going to tell me it wouldn't work, but I'd ditch the sports and go with more of a "hot talk" format. But instead of doing brain dead construction worker talk like on the Bone, I'd go for something more like what 620 WSUN was doing in the early 90's. Have a couple sports shows, have a sex show, have a couple news/talk type shows, and yes, still have some immature crap... but mix it up and make it local in morning and afternoon drive. That satisfies CBS's desire to bypass music licensing fees, and would give people who aren't sports fanatics a reason to tune in. The Bone could be performing SO much better than it is right now, if they dropped the whole "retard" thing on EVERY show and if they dropped all the macho/jock/construction worker crap.Their numbers are good, but you really have to give everyone a reason to listen and participate.

If not that, maybe I'd format it to compete with 97x. But I dunno man, if terrestrial radio is going to continue to compete with the alternatives, the programmers are going to have to get more creative.

Mike almost all the shows are 16th in men 25-54....mornings are ok..but....now getting killed..listen to the advertisers...wait...there none......wdae is getting stronger and stronger because of the local understanding of the mkt...im suprised with chernoff's moves here...i know mark and he is a good programmer...cbs has done great stuff in boston and detroit...now happening there in tampa

Their "Fan" in Baltimore is a fine sounding station, however, they have on air some long time Baltimore personalities from both sports and media. To be a winner in this format, you gotta have broadcast rights to at least one of the major league teams.

Sidebar, your Honor...

Maybe it's just me, but I don't take seriously the comments of posters who clearly have no grasp on syntax or punctuation. I won't say I'm the most perfect penman, and I won't hold a typo or two against a person, but the above posting comes across (to me, anyway) as rambling lunacy!

What was the point of abbreviating the word "markets" at "MKTS"? Was that necessary? It actually took me thirty seconds to figure out what that was, but I'm still scratching my head over why it was used. It could not have saved the poster any measurable time to use that contrived shorthand in lieu of just one word.

It's akin to interpreting something written in all capitals as "shouting."

Thank you for allowing this rant.

we or We?
doesnt or doesn't?
The use of an ellipsis indicates that a portion of a quote is missing or has been deleted. Nothing seems to be deleted or missing; therefore, the use of ellipses is incorrect.

Sorry, NewsStud. Couldn't resist piling on.

An ellipsis isn't only used to indicate a missing or deleted portion. It can also be used to indicate a dramatic pause, unfinished thought, or confusion.

I excuse a lot of spelling and punctuation errors on message boards because I realize that a lot of people are posting on their phones, or while they're at work, and they may not have time to get everything up to MLA standards.
