CBS Sports Radio "Will Be In NYC"

Wow, interesting! In terms of available frequencies, there aren't much. A good idea is for someone to get WQEW 1560 (Radio Disney) and make it CBS Sports Network. Noone has brought that up and I do not think something will result from this area. WFAN AM or FM is out, 94.7 could be in the running, while I think there's a very slim chance though. As many were talking about here with 101.1 going to WCBS AM on HD2 and 3, as I have a HD Radio myself, maybe CBS Sports Network national feed and/or a local cut in from WFAN now and then with the national feed on the HD3 would be the most viable solution in terms of finding a home for this CBS Sports Network.

Why would Disney (1560's owner, and also owner of ESPN) want to sell 1560 and allow a competing sports network to launch on it? That's why it hasn't been brought up.

Could they actually put the new network on 660?

That is what they are doing in Philly, Detroit and Tampa.

That's what I assumed would happen -- put the local shows on younger-skewing FM and put the AM out to pasture with canned birdfeed.

I am 'guessing' that CBS wants to see a WFAN breakdown between AM-FM with NY PPM's before making the switch.

I also expect WSCR Chicago will soon be FM bound and the network winds up on 670.

I know in the PPM world it doesn't matter, but it sucks for those of us who travel for work up and down the east coast. 660 comes in like a local in Philly and Hartford.

Even in NW NJ where I live, 101.9 is a tough listen.

This has all been discussed before. CBS announced it will not pre-emp live & local for network talk shows. Maybe on weekends, but that's it. And CBS will not compete with itself by replacing a music FM with another sports FM.

If it goes anywhere, it will be on the new Cumulus FM. That means three FM sports talkers.

But CBS would still be competing with itself essentially. I agree if it comes to NY on its own 94.7 seems like where it would go though. What would clear more, sports network in NY or country network in NY, I bet the former.

The sports brand in NYC is The Fan, not CBS Sports. Yes, they are competing with their coprorate brand, but they knew of this potential when they signed this deal with Cumulus. Cumulus is paying them to use that name. So they're still making money regardless.

The real issue is having three FM sports talkers. That's the subject for another thread.

With CBS Sports Radio coming in a week, I hope the Hudson Valley listening area should bring back a sports station like they did with ESPN Radio back in 2003. My suggestion is WEOK and WALL and they're are going to flip to CBS Sports Radio. I don't know if Mark West should continue to do in mornings on WALL. As you know WGNY's "Fox Oldies", WBPM and the two AM stations WEOK and WALL are still running "True Oldies Channel" under Scott Shannon. My guess is Poughkeepsie does not support all three oldies/greatest hits stations. WEOK and WALL going to sports is a great idea.

WFAN on the AM should go to CBS Sports Radio in a week, but if it does well, maybe Hudson Valley should bring back a sports station like WEOK and WALL which is Hudson Valley's new home for CBS Sports Radio.

It better not be 94.7 we have enough Sports talk in NYC. ESPN FM is failing. Bring CBS Sports radio to 92.3 where in the last ratings period 92.3 was 2.0 placed #17th in the ratings.

Cumulus didn't buy an FM in market 1 to run someone else's syndicated programming, I'm SO SICK of people talking like that's a legit and probable outcome.

The Network will end up on 660, split off from 101.9 which will remain local, bet the farm on it. The Network and The Fan serve two different audiences, and it opens up another revenue stream.

That seems to be the most obvious outcome. But I'm guessing 660 might still simulcast with the FM in some dayparts.

Another option would be an obscure rimshot. Networks do it all the time and claim it serves the bigger market.

Forget 92.3 or 94.7. Not happening.

You're right, perfect example: The "Los Angeles" affiliate for the network is XEPRS Rosarito Beach, Baja California, which is a San Diego-market station.

It's not "someone else's syndicated programming." Cumulus Media is syndicating the CBS Sports Network. They're paying CBS a ton of money for the right to do that. They need an NY clear to make some of that back.

CBS makes money regardless. They make 100% of the money with local programming. They make 50% of the money if they run the network. Which would you run?

It seems possible that Cumulus Media would finally move WFAS FM into the Bronx, and use it to broadcast CBS Sports Radio.
Or, perhaps SBS will throw in the towel and stop trying to improve WPAT FM's poor ratings. Maybe they could sell it for a decent price to Cumulus.

I'd run the two frequencies as separate formatted stations and enjoy two revenue streams.
