CBS Sports Station Tanks in October

Of course CBS Cleveland is going to make upgrades to 923TheFan whenever they feel it's necessary. But, heck...it's only been since the last week of August...2&1/2 months.

IMHO, Andy & Jeff's show is much, much better when they have interviews....and gets slow/too laid-back when they don't. Not that they should scream like idiots...just maybe a bit more natural enthusiasm (heck, this is sports...and sports fans are passionate!).

Also...don't be shocked if 923TheFan eventually gets the Indians AND Ohio State. Any OSU game conflicts could move to WNCX....the hopefully eventual home of 923TheFan.

By flipping to sportstalk in late summer of 2010, CBS has time to tinker with the format on 92.3, develop and grow their relationships with the Indians, Browns, Cavs, and OSU with an eye on getting broadcast rites with at least one of them, grow and develop relationships with local/regional advertisers (after all, that pays the bills!), and see how WNCX's future looks with respect to frequency flipping. Waiting til 2013 would've been a big mistake: many, many missed opportunities.

the station should NOT have debuted in 2013......My point was it should have debuted about 18 months ago..

Problem was, CBS has been trying to sell the entire Cleveland cluster since September 2008, and that threw all four stations into limbo. There was no way they were going to flip WKRK at that time, when a cheap jockless alt-rock format was the easy (and cheap) way out.

Les just said he is on rest of the week instead of Baskin&Phelps

HMMMMMM.

Odd because Phelps was one of the people who cut promos just yesterday saying (paraphrasing) "it's been big week in sports... from the Penn State situation to the Browns, keep it right here on 92.3 The Fan."

This may not be coincidental.

Glad that Les Levine is on for the rest of the week. They should give him the slot permanently if he wants it. Baskin is like his sportscasting brethren in this town like John Telich and Jim Donovan, (Nice guys) but not going to ask the tough questions at interviews. Les is a pro and I hope that he can take over the 10am-2pm slot. They need a veteran presence on the station that fans can identify with. The rest of the lineup is good (Yes even Chuck Booms is good in morning drive).

Les sounded pretty good. Maybe they can put together the old "Lake Effect Radio" Levine & Coughlin team if they really want cohosts for the 10-2 slot.

Don't read that much into it.

Tony Rizzo has also been MIA the last couple of days.

Gut feeling...everyone is suffering from Penn State fatigue and don't want to talk about it any more.

Phelps and Baskin never want to discuss anything controversial. The whole show is vanilla. Everything is great the Browns are great, Pat Shurmur is great. That is why I welcome Les Levine taking their slot today. It was actually interesting talk and not put our heads in the sands like ostriches and pretend everything is great with Cleveland sports. ::)

I don't think the "Talking Heads" have ever said everything's peachy keen in Berea.

They don't yell and scream like Triv or Rizz, nor do they go over the top with the bashing like Hammer or Fedor, but they spank the Browns.

We're so used to over the top personas like Triv, Rizz, Hammer, and Fedor, that it's almost like we've forgotten what even-keel criticism sounds like.

From the time of the start of this thread, PPM ratings weren't even available for the last week of October. I'd go back and look.

And Jeff Phelps is on vacation. Nothing more.

We can disagree all we want about Phelps/Baskin but having Les Levine there has brought the show up a whole level. Les has the energy that Baskin and Phelps together are lacking

That's why some of us were hoping that Dennis Manoloff would be on the midday show. The energy with just him there with Andy was much higher.

Really, as I said, I LIKE B&P and listen to them. But I'm not sure the show as it is now is a strong enough competitor for WKNR's highest rated show. (I'm also not sure Les would be the answer, and I like Les.)

And no, I'm pretty sure B&P have not said things are peachy keen in Berea. They just aren't ranting like Tony Rizzo did a few days ago. (And that was a *great* rant, by the way. The radio version of "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore" from the movie "Network".)

Another example of Sportstalk for you. In the late 80s WWWE (WTAM) had Sportsline with Geoff Sindelar who gave his opinions rather forcefully but was still a fan of the Browns/Indians/Cavs. He did not sugarcoat anything and was entertaining. The new owners of WWWE at the time did not care for Sindelar and let him go (he wound up on WKNR when it first started). and they replaced him with Mike Snyder. Mike Snyder is a very nice guy (Radio version of John Telich) just not very opinionated. It just makes for extremely boring radio when it comes to talk shows. Mike Snyder is good at Play by Play or a pre game host. You do not have to rant and rave to be successful but at least have some energy in your show. Baskin and Phelps are lacking that energy

Perhaps CBS should have a Starbucks kiosk installed in the Halle Building for Jeff & Andy?

I too think Dennis M. would add some excellent energy to 923TheFan. I've always liked Les Levine...but, don't know if he wants a fulltime radio gig. He's busy enough all day selling ads that run in his own excellent nightly TV show (6pm on NEON/Time Warner Cable).

Jeff & Andy might be OK as radio sports talk hosts....just not together on the same show...as both tend to be really laid-back. Both seem to need a higher-energy co-host.

Andy Baskin just laid into some of the people here on this board.

He sarcastically laid into Jeff Phelps (after JP spanked the Browns) by saying "you shouldn't be saying that...you're too vanilla."

Then AB just let loose and said "You people hiding behind the keyboards under an alias, be a REAL MAN and put your name to your opinions!"

What, is Andy Baskin somehow above being criticized?? Its 2011, this is how opinions are exchanged and how communication on topics like these takes place.

I love Baskin and like Phelps, but I also agree that there is an excitement missing from the show. Both are good guys with good takes and opinions and both have impeccable reps in the city as credible media members. Baskin is also an avowed fan of the teams and I like that. Phelps really isnt and he doesnt hide it. But something is missing. Not sure what it is, a 3rd host would seem crowded and "Lindsey Baseball" isnt the answer, either. Ill keep listening because I like the station and WKNR lost me a while back, but I just wish the mid day show had that little something extra to set it apart from the competition.

He said people on message boards should have the balls to put their real names down-well, Andy, it's Eric Stacey, and the show is not all that great-Phelps is terrible.

Baskin has thousands (presumably) of people listening to his show everyday and most of the calls he gets are very positive towards he and Phelps from what I hear. Why would he waste time getting ticked off on the air about what some knuckleheads on a message board think about the show? If he had issues with what was being said on here, why not come on the boards and address it all here? Talking about it on air would seem to only grow the egos of those people "hiding behind their keyboards." Cleveland's Talking Heads have been providing Browns' Fans with "Therapy Mondays", seems as though the show might need a therapy day for themselves

;)

92.3 The Fan would do well in spend on money on advertising their very existence. Frankly, ask most Clevelanders about the station, and you'll find that most haven't heard of it, and they have no idea it's on the FM dial.
