Wow...you are way out of touch aren't you? The reason for the lay offs at CC, and other companies, is the severe lack of advertising dollars coming in. That lack of revenue, in case you haven't noticed, is directly related to the economic problems plaguing the country at the moment.
This post is about those who were let go...you have basically said, they were let go because "they suck". Nice one genius.
I wish you swift unemployment status :-*
The economy is one thing. You can't fix that by cannibalizing your sales staffs and pretend that no one will notice.
But try this: if a business you frequent keeps treating you, and all the other customers that are there, like crap, you won't go back. Absolutely one of the many reasons why newspapers are in deep financial trouble. Yeah, the classifieds were rendered irrelevant by the internet, and the same goes with news gathering, but the papers themselves are at fault with failing to deliver on CONTENT.
That's John's point, and gr8's point. CC, Citadel, Cumulus and CBS (wow, a lot of "C's" there!) have had a lot to do with the dumbing-down of talent. Ditto with FM radio being over-researched and over-analyzed to death. It destroyed personality to the point where ratings as a whole are irrelevant. Dancing' Danny Wright, Bob James, "Jeff 'n Flash," "Lanigan, Webster & Malone," the WIXY Superman, the WHK Good Guys, etc., etc. All great examples of personality. All ratings winners (remarkably so with WIXY, no?) ... even with Danny's three stints in Cleveland. It worked for him.
If ownerships gave at least the resources and support to current deejays, who knows what we would have. After all, Rover, Maxwell and (yes) Triv all became successes because they were given just that. Ditto when Jimmy Malone, who had other main jobs even in the mid-80s, joined Lanigan on Thursdays mornings on WMJI to host an hour of silly news stories. Give them the chance.
It doesn't help that there is virtually no farm system for talent, either. No way that a promising jock can be "discovered" out of Sandusky, Peoria IL, or Barstow CA. It's gone. All gone.
