CC laying off 20% of workforce on 1/5?

Gid rid of the Sales Managers and those GM VP folks that really don't do anything other than prance around in God-like fashion, sitting in their big offices playing with their blackberry's.

Word on the street CC Sales Managers are offering cheap rates to National Accounts just to get the business on the books. But they tell their sales people to raise the rates! Double Standard indeed.

How classy to wait until a huge news day, send news staff out to cover it, wait 'til they get back to the studios, get the sound fed into the system & then the hammer falls. Good luck to all.

To the best of my knowledge, none of their radio stations in DC have local news staffs, who go out and cover stories. So that won't be a problem.

This may seem kind of silly to post more than a week later, but I have to say that I don't wish that ANYONE loses their job. I should have put a smiley next to my comment about life-suckers losing their jobs. It was a joke. (Though I have to admit, life might be a little nicer if the incessant complainers got over themselves).

Although I will say pretty much everyone has been talking about it with a level of concern now (still no gag orders, though - that's got to be SA).

Who knows what will happen...all I know is that I actually like working for Clear Channel Austin. It's no lie, and despite what some might think, I'm not brown-nosing - I sincerely like my job, my workplace, and my co-workers - it's one of the best offices I've ever worked in. I think anyone who knows me who works with me can vouch for my sincerity on that.

I sincerely hope that because of our relative success compared to many other Clear Channel markets that the layoffs will be minimal if at all. But do I expect us to get through it scott-free? Nope...I'm not THAT much of an optimist. :)

Anxious about tomorrow...

OKAY, I have been restraining myself, but I just don't get all of this.....

WHY, would CC let their plans slip two-weeks before 1/20? And, if it was a leak, why wouldn't they just do the deed ahead of schedule and avoid allowing 30,000 employees live with the stress. They aren't publicly traded, so why would they care about bad press and try to get lost in the Obama phenomenon?

Junky, I'm with you. And now, the news is immortalized in the biz sections of "inaugural editions" of newspapers all over the country.

At least a couple of markets had police stationed outside during the "layoffs", in case there was any trouble.

Apologies for breaking up the back & forth here:

Just a quick note: I decided to go ahead and dedicate most of my show this week to cover the headchopping at clear channel, seeing it has gotten little to no press at all. Id like to invite folks who are currently employed or have recently been dismissed to call/e-mail([email protected]) in to the show (see link in my sig) to relate their stories. The reason I do this is simple: We're all a wider community here(OTA,Internet,sat,ect..), we have people who we know ourselves or are acquainted to who have been cut from the "big radio compaines" recently who want to vent or get something off their chest. The good news is that you'll be kept anonymous and I wont give out your names/information on air.

Just saw on our local NBC affiliate about CheapChannel's layoffs...10 out of 20 employees(1,800 around the country) got the old curb kick.

They got it wrong. It was 9%

I've been trying to get my head around the math. If you laid off 1,850 employees, the bulk of whom were in sales, would you see an immediate $400 million dollar reduction in the budget? Where did that 20% number come from? Is it possible that it was part of the original leak because it was another number discussed? Perhaps there are more cuts planned?

I've heard a couple of people speculate that those who have survived this round no longer have a guarantee of a generous severence package the way these folks had. Would the company need to implement a wider-reaching slash later on to make up for the losses in the $400 million reduction that were given back as severence packages?

Can you get $400 million from this 9%? Or would there have to be more cuts later in order to reach that goal?

You're overthinking some numbers that don't really matter. It's not like that was some hard target. There may be more cuts later to reach some other goal. It really doesn't matter. It's not like the SEC is going to do an accounting on all this.

Ironic that CC signed Rush Limbaugh to a longterm deal worth exactly $400 million... right before the economy cratered. Now stations are renegotiating with local talent to bring down their salaries.
Did CC renegotiate with El Rushbo? Or are people losing their jobs because his money has to come from somewhere?

Big A, how do you know that wasn't some hard target? Every other media source is reporting that $400 million IS a hard target. Where do you get your information? Please, enlighten the rest of us.

Every other media source originally reported 1000 people would be cut. They were wrong. They also said something about more national programming. They were wrong. I think their credibility is a bit weak on this. Where did THEY get their information?

Nice dodge, sugar, but I asked the question of you first. You don't get to answer a question with a question and call it an answer.

No. I will not say who I am. I will only say Good Bye. I really love Radio, but I am done. I have had some great times with some great people.

Correction: that was 1850 worldwide, and that includes outdoor and the international divisions. US Radio may be about 600 or so.
