CC pushing the web awful hard

iHeartRadio also has a service similar to Pandora where you can make stations based on artists, songs or generas. You can also tailor the station to play more or less familiar artists and songs.

iHeartRadio's make-your-own-stations service has a big marketing problem when people can't describe it without mentioning Pandora.

It's a laugh to go from one I Heart Radio station to another and hear the same song on all of them. Is CC brain Dead or something like that? Come on guy's give your listener's more respect than that! With all the choices out there for internet and smartphone radio why limit your listeners choices? I use my apps all the time for radio listening and I'm over fifty and I really enjoy what's out there.

True, but you forgot one thing.  iHeartRadio also has a service similar to Pandora where you can make stations based on artists, songs or generas. You can also tailor the station to play more or less familiar artists and songs.  That's how I have used iHeartRadio, at least.  Then again, I also use Pandora, LastFM, Slacker and Spotify.  I'm sure most of those recipients who downloaded the iHeartRadio app are using it for the same reason I do.

No, I didn't forget it. I was lumping all online radio services together regardless of features and types.  I also didn't see it as being worth discussing because we can't get that information, at least not yet, and I don't think Clear Channel cares if someone is listening to a custom station or to a local station via iHeartRadio as the money will spend the same way regardless (after they start selling ads on custom and genre-specific stations in January).  Besides, regardless of what you may use iHeartRadio for, Pandora still outsells it and every other radio app by a considerable margin.  What we still don't know is how often people actually use those apps, nor do we know what time periods were included in the download statistics.  I have Pandora on my iPhone, for example, but I rarely use it.  I used to use Pandora for trips because it could handle network drops more gracefully than iHeartRadio, Radio.com, AccuRadio, Slacker, etc.  However, I don't have issues with the other apps now because my cellular network is more reliable on the routes for my most common trips.  I also downloaded iHeartRadio nearly three years ago.  I have no idea if I'm included in the most current statistics or not.  Of course, if I am, it would be safe to say most of the downloads of iHeartRadio would have happened well before the personalization feature was ever introduced!

By the way, I saw a study last week courtesy of Onavo indicating TuneIn has more monthly usage than Pandora or Spotify.  TuneIn rated at 6.6% usage while Pandora was a 5.8% and Spotify was at 3.6%.  No other radio service even hit 1%.  Again, we don't know why people are using TuneIn (it's not just a terrestrial streaming app; it works just fine for many of your internet only stations, too), but we know it's used fairly often in comparison with competing apps.  I also didn't see how often other iPhone and Android apps were being used to see how well TuneIn compared with non-radio related apps.

How does all of this cell phone based radio listening effect one's battery charge and available phone service plan minutes, or megabyte tonnage tolls? Is it worth it, especially if its the same garbage thats on air?

How does it affect minutes? Not at all. Data? If you're lucky enough to have an unlimited plan, not at all. If you're not, Verizon says that an hour of streaming a day is about 1.75 GB/month ( http://www.verizonwireless.com/splash_includes/datacalculator.html ).

And as for variety, that's the entire point....it's NOT the same old CC stuff you'll hear with their app. The BBC alone has enough different stations to provide for almost any musical taste, except for American Country. And there's always IHeart for that! ;)
