CC Rumored Layoffs Next Week

Found this on another board:

Quote:

This is the time of year that CC always sheds themselves of staff. Heard there is a meeting in Chicago where market managers are given flashdrives that outline hour by hour what it costs to operate each of their stations. If local managers want to keep their jobs they have to eliminate someone elses. Apparently a Market Manager in Iowa said he had enough and resigned at a small/medium market managers meeting. He was tired of terminating good people.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

What a shame that Nick Gnau lacks the Iowa manager's courage.

Hey, I've got an idea for CC. Why not convert all their licenses to non-commercial and get main studio waivers like K-Love does. No local staff needed at all!

If non coms could run full fledged commericals.. I wouldn't put it past Clear Channel to try that ;)

Cut things down to a sales person or two, a receptionst ... and maybe a GM ... and they can almost do that now.. Having a "Main Studio" at the sales office does not mean someone actually ever goes into it and presses buttons!

WTUE's Tony Tilford has also been shown the door. Color me sad. I enjoyed the deep cuts hd channel that he programmed for a while as well as his work on 'TUE.

Isn't consolidation a wonderful thing? Remember when Cincinnati had three competing stations with news operations and two newspapers (with one suing if you used their material on air)???

It's sad to see so many good people lose their jobs do to CCs greed! Steve Kramer is one of the good guys from The X and will be missed. I was thinking back to some of the other good DJs from the Edge/X and wondered whatever happened to them?

Sandy Collins, BC, Jim from the Edge night show, John Da Newguy, Vinnie, Todd (from Shawn & Todd Mornings), Ryan (night show)...are any of these people still in radio?

Sandy Collins is at 95.3 The Eagle and WHIO AM/FM, BC is at Mainline, and Vinnie is out of radio doing a job in which he got his degree in (and is much more secure). I'm not sure on the others.

Good article here about the loss of local radio: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/11/01/local-radio-getting-tuning-out-thanks-internet/?test=faces

Quote from article:
"So who will win the next round in the music wars?

There's one obvious loser: the guys in the middle, local radio stations. With free online music services appealing to those of us on a budget and SiriusXM taking the high-end, luxury listeners, there may not be any middle ground left.

That's disappointing. I like local stations, which tend to ground you and connect listeners to the local community. One woman at a rural radio station I listen to in has a voice like nails on chalk board, but every time I hear her, I know exactly where I am and that she's nearby, not sitting thousands of miles away. There's a comfort and cohesiveness you get from hearing the local jock rant about fighting the snow storm to get to work, just before you head out into the same storm.

Streaming services and national programs may be the future of radio, but that will be cold comfort indeed."

Could this be an opportunity for someone that wants to start a local radio station?

Is ClassX cheering this move by CC?

How much does it cost to get up and running with a decent signal that could compete with the well-known commercial stations in town? $Tens of thousands, $hundreds of thousands, $millions? I'm curious - I really don't know.

If there is a channel available, the FCC would auction it off. IIRC there are no market covering signals to be auctioned off in Cincinnati, so you have to buy an station. A good class B (what it takes to cover Cincinnati) would go for millions or most likely 10's of millions. At one time stations were priced at 2 or 3 times the gross billings. Then things got crazy.

It might be easier to start an Internet station with a good mobile phone app and website. With the right business model you could attract advertisers to sustain it.

But, finding "the right business model" IS the big problem with internet radio at this time. Some find one...others don't. Internet radio is still well within its' infancy. Could it be the future? Perhaps. But, just like all other forms of broadcasting, you're going to have to be able to prove that you have a substantial audience, or a well defined "niche" before the big advertisers will come your way.

Sandy is at The Eagle.
BC is at Main Line.
Todd is out of radio.
Scott Mallory is out of radio and wrote a fictional radio book entitled "Tales of a Washed Up Neverwas".

"complete fools" is put very mildly.

I have another name for it but I won't say it here...otherwise it will be "truncated."

So how about dumping that $400 mil talk show host we all know and some say "ditto" to if you want to save some big bucks.

Thank you CC for destroying radio as we know it.

Damn you CC! I worked with Rick LaBeau, super guy, extremely talented, great to work with. I believe he will land on his feet somewhere. He's too good to be out of work for long. Best wishes to all the axed staffers.

I remember listening to Rick LeBeau, when I lived in Dayton. He is very, very talented.

By the way, what is "Greed?"
