CC Sale

Yep...half the staff or less will be left by the beginning of 2008...do the math...450,000 million and 180 stations...2.5 million dollars on average per station...that's a good deal for some of the top billers but a horrible deal for many many more...DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE BUSINESS AS USUAL? Better think again!

Anyone know who is getting Ashtabula, Defiance??

I heard Goodman was going to get Parkersburg and Huntington...but now it looks as if he didnt get those 2 markets...instead those may get gobbled up by WEST VIRGINIA RADIO CORPORATION.

Saga's Ohio Properties now consist of....

COLUMBUS OHIO
WSNY-FM, WODB-FM, WJZA-FM, WJZK-FM
MANSFIELD OHIO
WMAN-AM, WBCO-AM, WYHT-FM, WSWR-FM
ASHLAND OHIO
WNCO-AM, WNCO-FM, WFXN-FM, WXXF-FM, WXXR-FM

I'd thought I read (maybe even on this thread) that Federated out of Ft Wayne (WOWO, WMEE, WQHK and others) would be getting Defiance.

i heard that too, thats what I originally posted....but I am just asking in case anyone else heard something different. If thats the case, it gives FEDERATED MEDIA

SOUTH BEND/ELKHART INDIANA
WTRC-AM, WNIL-AM, WAOR-FM, WLEG-FM, WBYT-FM, WYPW-FM, WRBR-FM, WUBU-FM
FORT WAYNE INDIANA
WOWO-AM, WKJG-AM, WMEE-FM, WQHK-FM, WFWI-FM, WBYR-FM, WFGA-FM
DEFIANCE OHIO
WONW-AM, WZOM-FM, WDFM-FM, WNDH-FM

If you think about it, the market would be perfect for Federated because of its proximity to Fort Wayne, WDFM shows up in Fort Wayne, and WQHK does well in Paulding, Defiance and Van Wert Counties, he could also sell them on WZOM and WDFM.

WDFM could definately be a Ft Wayne move-in, they once had an on-channel translator there and the on-air signal, at least last time I was there was pretty comparable to WBYRs.

I just hope thats who got the stations. Thats what we heard in the office, because we thought our parent company picked them up, but they got Mansfield instead.

I would also assume that WDFM would be a move in. From what I understand, since Federated owns the WFGA tower in Hicksville, WDFM could logically move onto that tower and lower wattage to 40,000 watts which still would cover the entire market. I really doubt they would keep it Hot AC and most likely they would have to spin off WFGA which on some other boards they are claiming could go to Oasis as a simulcalst to 106.3 in Columbia City.

All Access has a piece about the new Ashtabula buyers.

Nice spelling on Bismarck (cough), but you neglected to include the 6 Minot, ND, stations in the buy.

My guess is that Marion Carbondale will go to Maverick or Connoisseur and the North Dakota stations will go to Schurz and Connoisseur. Charlottesville, do you think Eure is going to try and get back into their old market? Maybe First Broadcasting or Nassau will try to get in there. Yuma, well I think thats up in the air along with Victorville.

Kinda funny, I remember my first though was Ashtabula would go to Embracia but under the mediaone banner, instead its going under "SWEET HOME ASHTABULA", interesting!

I highly doubt we will see what most on this board defines as "local radio" if any changes we will see them replace Clear Channel Voice tracking with Satellite or their own voice tracking.

Would be nice to see a lot of local radio being done but I doubt we will see the new owners going out and hiring 24/7 staff etc..

Form what I've been told, Saga's Smooth Jazz WJZA in Columbus is not voice tracked as much as you think...neither is B107.9...now that Jazz is on the bird I know that the local talent are all live...B is live too until 7 pm...Saga is a pretty good company to work for from what I'm told, although a little bird from Columbus tells me that the sale in Mansfield is false and that they weren't purchased by Saga. This comes from an employee; so it should be interesting to see what comes about in the next few days.

As far as WQIO and the other Mt. Vernon stations...Erick Klausten's production skills don't come close to the other people who produced those stations in the past...he sounds amature at best...you can definately tell his spots from what is coming out of ABC or the other BSA stations. When Eric Matthews, Gregg Burgess, Trisha Moore, Larry Gilliland, Joe Rinehart, Dana Stone et all were there is when the stations in Mt. Vernon shined most...I'm not impressed with local owner's BSA...I think they were better when they were owned by the Stampflies and Clear Channel...THE EAGLE is terrible...satellite radio is a sin...
The bird mascot is so tired; I can't stand to listen to them and they are the only station I can get in my office...ugh

What we have heard around the office is that Saga is picking up Mansfield, and I talk to these people every single day. My paycheck comes from Grosse Pointe.

Now, if you heard something different, you should enlighten us and post it. The market makes perfect sense for Saga to pick it up due to its location and proximity to stand alone WBCO AM which Saga for some reason forgot to dump in the process of spinning of WQEL. I would say they arent keeping the AM becuase the tower looks pretty when its lit up at night.

I agree that it's a good market, but I was told from an employee who questioned the GM in Columbus that no such sale was taking place and that Saga was only interested in purchasing the Marion stations. This is just what I heard...so who knows.

The stations shined most during that era? WQIO in particular went on the air as a CHR in 1987. The production during that era set the standard for the other people mentioned in this post. People such as Jan Chamberlain, Bill Moore and Dave Macy were the first air and production people and gave it the Super Q identity. The processing in those days was also awesome as were the production methods. This was the first station to work in a digital medium (DAT) for production and music. Anyone remember Tony Coles? He started at WQIO circa 1988 as did John Zellner and Stacy McKay.

When Eric Matthews, Gregg Burgess, Trisha Moore, Larry Gilliland, Joe Rinehart, Dana Stone et all were there is when the stations in Mt. Vernon shined most

Those were all great personalities, faced with the challenge of battling the fact CC was limiting their abilities to shine and running the station into the dirt because they were planning to sell.

I hear Matthews has gotten out of radio altogether. Gregg's still doing sports and occasional news assignments, Trisha's a morning show host, Larry's behind a deli counter serving pastrami and ham (seriously), Joe's at WNZR and Dana has gotten out of the game.

I'd much rather see radio have live and local personalities at least during the daylight hours, but let's face the reality that when it comes to building a business and making money, satellite formats make it much more feasible to operate. More and more stations are going satellite, and while it sucks because it's taking the personality out of radio, it makes good financial sense.

Some people need to come to grips with the fact that this problem is going to get worse before it gets better. Voice tracking makes it easy to fill air shifts with less personnel and less man hours. Any investor in a radio station is going to jump at that opportunity - unless they're just buying a radio station because they love broadcasting so much.

Theres not a single doubt Shellout Falter that sat radio works in the short term. I am totally for it if it sounds good. I am not going to beat a dead horse, but ABC sucks! Simply just upgrade to a better sat, I think that would only improve the stations. The better the station sounds, the more money they make. In my honest opinion, they overpaid bigtime for the signals, but thats just my thought.

I agree, it sucks to have sat fed radio, might as well get XM, but to make the quick buck then back out and sell them for 3 mil is all thats gonna happen. Running them on Sat is the best bet.

I really doubt that Goodman is going to flip too many stations to sat. He will try to keep them locally programmed, just on short staffs. Will there be shifts without talent....prolly, but it will be the best for his overall operation.

Satellite radio does work in the short term for a group of investors looking to grow their company. Properly imaged satellite radio with emphasis on local information at every tasteful opportunity can actually be done well. Remember, we're competing with MP3 players now --- and your MP3 player doesn't have a disc jockey at all.

The owners of BAS have been overheard talking about the possibility of adding a morning show host in the future on WQIO. When that will happen is dependent on a multitude of factors, but in the meantime they continue to provide relevant local news coverage, updates on coming events, public service broadcasts and both network and local sports.

Before anyone gets down on BAS, take into consideration that they're not a huge media conglomorate with no personality or emotions like Clear Channel. It's a small company that treats its employees well and has a genuine interest in becoming involved in the community. I've said it before and I'll say it again, WMVO-AM has live and local personalities on the air every weekday and does more for the community in a week than many stations do in a year or more.

And on a final note, I don't necessarily think ABC is the best network on Earth, but I can't vouch for WAITT being that much better because I've never worked with them. ABC certainly does news much better than most news networks out there, IMHO, and their music format isn't terrible. I can see WAITT being a tremendous choice if you want to do a local jock/satellite combination just due to the ease of use and the music library.

Just my thoughts.

FYI - Word is that the Saga/Mansfield sale is about 90% complete...still in negotiations..this is what I got as of this afternoon....

As far as Trisha from WQIO - she was the morning show host on Smooth Jazz in Columbus...as of last week she is doing 9 to noon because of guess what...satellite hook-up...they replaced her with the boring Ramsey Lewis Morning Show...another station succombs to satellite services...amazing...

I heard that too about Saga. I guess its pretty much belongs to them, they are just waiting for a few minor details. Saga offered a certain amount and now Clear Channel is saying that one of the signals has a stronger move in available making it a better Mansfield/Ashland signal, so they are asking for a few more bucks. Same with the stations in Defiance. I guess Federated offered them the deal and they bit, and then realized that Federated can move WDFM into Hicksville making it a Fort Wayne station and now they want to raise the price. So that could be alittle bit before a deal is finalized.

No one is coming down on BAS, atleast im not, I think everyone is just saddened to see the stations that they watched become something worth while be dismantled overnight. I worked for WCLT some time back and remember competing with QIO .... wow, that was quite some time ago.

If anything, just do the sat fed thing a little better.....thats all anyone is asking for.

Wouldn't you know it'd be about money...amazing...if these people concentrated more on the product than the stupid dollar, terestrial radio would be in a lot better shape. Saga is a pretty good company, I'm sure it would be a good move for them and the Mansfield market.

It is a shame about 93Q...in it's hay day it was a pretty powerful station...even went head to head with Y105 for a while...I always enjoyed listening to them, especially when they were a chr/hot ac station (should never had switched to soft ac)...the personalities were first class...there is just something more personal about local talent...you can relate to them, you know about the things and places they're talking about...satellite I don't mind if it's at least someone who is actually a "radio person", someone who got there start in this business and have stayed passionate about it, I just don't get the syndicated celebrity stuff... (i.e. the ramsey lewis', brett michaels, etc.) they're musicians, not dj's and the voice quality of some of these guys is just piss poor. Besides, like they don't have enough money...now they have to go and take good jobs from people who have worked so hard to get where they are in this business...it really disgust's me. Glad I hung my microphone up :) I'm floored that just because they're a "name" that some of these stations think they're going to bring in major ratings...weird...
