A sad day for radio, when a company boots NINE PERCENT of its company-wide work force...

I agree. It appears that the R-I Server just could not handle the HUGE swarm of potential posters.

Brad Kava reports that 98.5 KFOX (KUFX/San Jose) PD Laurie Roberts, DJ Greg Stone, "Weekly World Update" host Fred Reiss, Mark Fenichel (sales) and Rebecca Campos (sales) were all "escorted out of the building and not allowed to pack up their things, but given good compensation packages."

A station manager I once worked for tried that we'll send you your stuff routine on me. So all I did was call the local police for assistance and within about fifteen minutes an officer was there and told the station manager in no uncertain terms that unless he gave me my belongings within five minutes that he would be arrested if he didn't comply. I got my things. Its amazing how fast that manager crumbled under the threat of arrest! A station has no right under the law to deny you your property. So why do you all fall for that BS?

It was a sad day for alot of people formerly of the CC empire. Seeing around 10% of your total workforce pinkslipped due to idiot managment and a mantra of voicetracking/syndie is the clear and present danger in this business. For all the folks who were dismissed either on the mic or behind the scenes, I feel for them and I have a feeling most will bounce back. Im thinking about doing this weeks show on the CC cluster-f (see sig below for link), because it needs to be said....

I'm so bummed about the cuts at KFOX. Laurie is a market icon and a class act, while Greg has (umm had) the best Progressive Rock show in the country. And Fred; what a lovely man.

I hope they all land on their feet... fast...

While I don't necessarily disagree that Clear Channel may be the 'Evil Empire That Destroyed Radio;' and I've complained along with a lot of other people about the voice-tracked blandness that many Clear Channel stations have become; and while it's always sad when good and talented people lose their jobs:

What is Clear Channel supposed to do?

We are clearly in frightening times economically. Did you see what happened with the market yesterday, and the very real danger facing Bank of America, Citibank, and other venerable institutions? Yes -we're in deep trouble because corporations were greedy and made very poor decisions. Compared to these, Clear Channel looks like a bunch of geniuses.

I work in a public agency that gets its funding primarily from property taxes and sales taxes. We're vulnerable too, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a a s__t-storm of layoffs and service cuts next year.

To mis-quote Bette Davis: "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy ride."

One thing Clear Channel executives COULD do is take a 9% pay cut, just to show they're sharing the pain...

It isn't the staffs' fault that CC paid overly optimistic prices for their post de-reg expansion...

They could probably take a 20% and not hurt their lavish lifestyle.

A comment on Jerry Del Colliano's blog today has a quote from Forbes
that the Mays boys agreed to reduce their base 2009 salaries to 500K,
and afterwards a base of one mil. How considerate of them. ::)

No mention made of any compensatory sacrifices planned by Hogan.
In this case, Major Hochstetter was absolutely right when he said
"what is this man doing here?" ;D

Hogan is just one of those great business mysteries...We'll never really know why they kept him on. Maybe to give the troops false hope while they worked out the bloodbath.

Damn shame about Laurie, especially. Class lady and a great jock and programmer.

Just another wave in the slow moving Tsunami that will eventually kill big corporate radio as we know it. What it will turn into is anyone's guess.

Agreed...maybe they can even take a 30% cut. Or are they Dennis Kozlowski wannabes?

I know it's a sad situation of late with this gnus, but regards that last comment, OFan:
LMAO!!!
A little dark humor is needed here...And Gawd bless Howard Caine (Major Hochstetter)!
;D

So was Clark Reid, to hear from a few people...
and most of the others, I'm sure...

Although it has been mentioned many a time throughout these R-I boards, and will likely
remain true, we know that the pre-deregulation radio days will never return...

We can only hope that those present-day owners full of avariciousness and insecurity will rid
themselves from the buisness, and that more-responsible ownership and quality management
will return in their place, to undo whatever damage that was created...

That's now twice in the last couple of years that Clark Reid has been laid off at 340 Townsend. Clark you're a class act!

Another option is the ba.broadcast Usenet newsgroup. It's available wherever good Usenet servers abound, or via Google Groups.

I have to give some credit where it's due. It seems the Mayses (is that right?) took pay cuts to 500 Gs a year this year. They go back up to 1 mil next year according to R&R.

It is BEYOND upsetting that Clear Channel has let go of Clark Reid!! Mr. Reid is one of the country's best program directors and has won numerous awards for Clear Channel. Perhaps Clear Channel has fear of excellence here in the Bay Area. How else can one explain Mr. Reid's layoff (and the other excellent radio personnel from Clear Channel) yesterday and the unthinkable destruction of one of the best radio stations in the history of the Bay Area- KABL 960AM back in 2005?

For those who don't remember, KABL, under Mr. Reid's excellent music guidance, had the best radio personalities for years, and played some of the best music of all time. Now, thanks to Clear Channel, we have no station left that plays Tony Bennet's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." I mourn the loss of KABL on a daily basis and miss the voices of Jim Lange, Dino Donikian, Carter B. Smith, and of course, Mr. Reid.

I hope that Clear Channel will do what's right and hire Clark Reid back, a third time, and while they're at it, bring KABL back along with the great standards, Carter B. Smith and Dino Donikian.

For those who missed it, Clear Channel licensed the KABL Music imaging to the radio museum, and we continue the former Internet-only stream at www.kabl960.com with Bill Moen doing the voicework. Clark Reid, to say the least, was instrumental in helping us to keep the spirit of KABL alive.

What is most annoying is how really great people are cut loose and some stations in the cluster are completely decimated and picked apart while others are barely touched. It's favoritism on the part of the management.

You'll rarely - if ever see anyone let go from KISQ because of who is in charge there - will never touch his baby!

And interesting to see places like Wild and KMEL have a nearly full staff with PD, MD, assistants, etc. while others like KKSF don't even have a PD anymore.

It has nothing to do with billing or ratings either - it's cronies basically keeping their less talented buddies employed while the real talent has to exit.

It's like a modern day good ol' boys club and if you're not in it, you're the first to go.
