CELTICS NEED A RADIO HOME AS WEEI WALKS AWAY

In the 1970s all the "good sports are WBZ, 1030; Patriots, Bruins, Celtics,BC Football.

I can see the Celtics on 98.5 the Sports Hub with conflicts going to WZLX 100.7 . Celtics on ZLX would not be that bad a fit.

Today's Herald article on this situation has a graphic showing the WEEI Celtics radio network (typo:
WEAV in Burlington VT area is at 960 not 670 IIRC). Interesting: when you go to the WEEI site
and click on "Network Stations" you get a list of their talk network and a link to the Red Sox
Radio network...but no link to the Celtics network (the Herald graphic, taken from an older WEEI
one, lists Burlington, Montpelier, Woodstock VT; several in Maine; Concord NH et al)
As of now there is no Celtics network apparently, since 'EEI (unless they reconsider/C's give them a better offer) is not running them.

I think the Celts should go to 98.5 the Sports Hub with WZLX for the conflicts. Alternatively, Greater Media could go for it and put it on WROR.

Re: WROR--Could be but remember each game is a commitment of several hours when you count the pre- and post-game shows, and some music stations might not want such an interruption on a regular basis. Now, WBOQ here on the N. Shore has had the Sox for several years (despite being so near
to the Peabody stick of WEEI-FM) and they target it in their advertising--playing "good time favorites" and the Sox, and getting locals to advertise. ("Fish where the fishes are." So if you're
the Azorean Restaurant in Gloucester, you buy time on WBOQ for those reasons...) And they did
briefly have the Celtics too. Anyway, they don't seem to mind, but would, say, a WATD or
WROR want to carry the Celtics on a regular basis?

As for Sports Hub getting C's and bumping conflicts w/ B's to sister stations:
The 'games bumped' I can see as there's supposedly only 19 conflicts between them
and the B's. (More if there are playoffs) There were times in the past when, say, Oldies 103
carried the B's game when the B's were on WBZ 1030, and it was Election Night...but it was rare.

And btw WBOQ picks up the feed right off air from WEEI and they have to be careful to have their board op react in time when it comes to breaks.

ON WBOQ
Castiglione: We'll be right back right here on the Shaw's Red Sox Radio Network (or whatever it is)
WEEI Announcer: Dennis and Callahan--weekd---
(quickly the board op reacts)
WBOQ Liner: "North Shore...104.9!"

Just posted on WBOQ's facebook:

>>Boston Red Sox @ San Francisco Giants comin' up at 3:45! It's a day game..... meaning you can listen at your desk while you work (or not work)!

Again, who would listen and who would advertise? This is a changed world for radio. Bottom line isn't everything, it's the only thing, and it's hard to see what value any of the current profit-margin-obsessed radio chains would put on rights to what's looking like a 25- to 30-win team for at least the next two seasons, especially since the Celts are No. 4 among the city's four major league teams (not counting MLS, of course, or even Major League Lacrosse) even when they're doing well.

I think the only way the Celtics will stay on WEEI-93.7 is if they buy airtime, produce the broadcasts, and sell spots.

In fact, I think that buying airtime, producing the games themselves, and selling advertising will be the only way they will be on radio this coming season, given the short lead time between now and the start of the season.

There is, in my opinion, a real chance that the C's won't have a radio flagship for at least the first part of the season, again because there may not be enough time to get a new radio deal together in-time (even if the team takes broadcasts in-house, as outlined above).

But if they (eventually) make a deal with "The Sports Hub", I expect that all Bruins and Celtics home games will be on WBZ-98.5, with road games of one in conflict with home games of the others shunted-off to one of CBS Radio's other local outlets.

That would likely mean about 68-72 games of each team on "Sports Hub" and about 10-14 games of each somewhere else on the dial, depending on the teams' schedules.

Wild card: Could the Celtics abandon radio entirely and just have games on Comcast Sports Net (and occasional national broadcast-network or cable-network telecasts)??

I believe the Celtics are scheduled for a whopping three national telecasts this year. And if the season is as bad as most think it will be, they may get only one shot or none at all next year. I don't think the Celtics would willingly abandon radio -- although who knows how many people listen to the broadcasts; there'd have to be an Edward Snowden type at Entercom to leak out those Arbitron specifics!

How does CBS do it in Detroit with 97.1 The Ticket as they have the rights to all four pro teams.

CBS Detroit also has WXYT 1270, which is all-sports CBS Radio, but not a simulcast of The Ticket. I presume that's where conflicts end up.

If they go back to 1510, does Spencer Ross once again come here from New York to do play-by-play?

Or Howard David ;D

Actually when 1510 took the Celtics - Sean Grande was hired. ( Both Sean and Cedric Maxwell are team employees )

From all accounts the Entercom deal with the Celtics was pure revenue sharing and if that is the case, the bean counters at Entercom have decided they can make more money with Mike Adams than hoops.

EEI has a tough nut the next 2 years as the 2014 and 2015 Red Sox seasons they are on the hook for $20M a year.

Gut feeling is the Celtics wind up with Greater Media and most likely at WROR.

I mentioned to @bostonradio on twitter that the C's could wind up at a music station. He said he didn't think so as no NBA team is on a music station and added he thought they could go to
1030 (if C's put up the cash) or 1510 or maybe even 1200, as a long shot (C's on biz-financial radio?). As said before any sports team on a music station can really disrupt them (baseball especially, long games) when you consider pre- and post-games, etc. can make it a long absence
of the primary music format.

North Shore 104.9 with Red Sox is an exception as they seem to welcome the Sox and local
advertisers. They did have Celtics for a year or more, too. 105.7? maybe; 96.9? Maybe not (younger audience who may not welcome the music disruption, not that ROR fans may be too pleased either)

Greater has the 76ers in Philly right?

Then why are the Patriots on two rock stations (WCCC and WAQY) in the Hartford and Springfield markets? Are those stations losing audience (and advertiser dollars) by carrying football?

Greater Media does have the rights to the Sixers down here. Flagship is 97.5 The Fanatic WPEN(FM).
They also have the Flyers. When both teams are playing, one will air on 93.3 WMMR.
