Ch-ch-ch-changes

Let the speculation begin. Those who don't like this format will be salivating at the thought of it's possible demise. Of course, I hope it doesn't happen.

If the link doesn't work, it's a report from Radio-Online about Maxine Todd resigning from her PD position at KHJZ. I wish her the best.

Chuck,

Any chance you might be headin back that way???

Changes have indeed started at CBS. Houston, KHJZ station manager, the PD,
CBS NSM.....all gone Thursday pm.

I don't think this necessarily means there will be a change on 95.7 in the near future, but you gotta admit the possibility just got greater. KHJZ sounds stale, especially the old 60's-80's rock/R&B/pop that gets mixed in---perhaps 80% of their playlist is material I grew tired of listening to years ago.

With the demise this week of WQCD the downward spiral of SJ continues. If CBS is chopping costs, they may think it's time for a change. Would it be to Movin', Fresh, or something out of the blue?

Poops, I miss the format. However, I don't see that happening. They are already voice tracking the evening shift with Donna Franklin. Maxine did not care for voice tracking. She wanted the personalities to be 'live.' Now that she has left the building, I feel certain that will change. As time goes on, the marketing managers will be in control and voice track most of it. Bean counting is the order of the day. We know where that will lead....to the next format.

Hi Chuck,

As I've said many times, it's a shame that the bean counters just don't get that radio could be so much better with real people on the air, less liner cards, and larger playlists. But back to my original question, it's obvious by previous posts that you like that format which lead me to wonder if you might be heading back that way. It does seem however, that you like where you are now, which is great as well. Hopefully, with folks like yourself hanging in there, the trends toward voice tracking, small playlists, and listeners being fed what the bean counters want them to hear, will turn around for the better. As far as the possible format change at KHJZ, maybe CBS might just give Colonel St. James the Hawiian, Polka, All bowling all the time format he was talking about a few months back. Oh we can only hope ;D

Let's see, when The Wave first hit the air, they were "Smooth Jazz" and only Smooth Jazz. They immediately vaulted from 16th in the market up to 4th. Granted, some of those numbers can be attributed to "curiosity seekers", but, that was quite a welcome change for a station that had been floundering for years. Then, once they settled in, someone decided that it would be cool to add music that could be heard any day or time on Sunny and rotate it with the Smooth Jazz. You see, at CBS, they never heard of the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" They broke it. Now, just as everywhere else in the radio business, their 'fixes' broke the performance of the company and the top-heavy management is scrambling, trying to cover their heineys before they get the boot from the accountants and lawyers who are running the business into the dirt. I would love it if just ONE radio company would hire a real RADIO PERSON to captain the ship.

Oh, and this talk about 2008 being a better year for radio......really? In whose dreams? Look around you. There's a lot of talk about a recession. Unless there's a surge in advertising by bancruptcy lawyers, radio can just forget about 2008, given the 2007 track record. Grab your life vests, eveyone!

Old Crow, you can come sit over here on the Doomsayer's Bench with me, but we'll have to scoot over for this guy:

You can listen to DFW's version of it at http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/?CALLSIGN=KMVKFM

KMVK used to be Smooth Jazz KOAI until CBS flipped it. Hispanic females are among the format's key demos, which would seem to work against it being adopted here in Houston--101.1 and 104.9 are already aiming right at them, albeit en Espanol. Others like KRBE and KPTY also have a good grasp of those listeners.

I would think 95.7 would more likely go with the "Fresh" format, and try to steal KODA's huge female audience. You can sample the Fresh format from CBS's WWFS in NYC at: http://cbsplayer.streamtheworld.com/index.php?CALLSIGN=WWFSFM

Of course, CBS might go with something completely different, or make no changes at all.
