Chad Benson Show on KRLD

I did notice they had fill-in news anchors from noon-3 for the last several weeks, so apparently they cleared room for this some time ago.

Something else: CBS Radio top-of-the-hour news seems to have also gone bye-bye, at least in this time slot.

Didn't see this coming -- Show starts today from 12 noon - 3pm.

I guess the whole "All News All Day" doesn't apply anymore!

This is really disappointing on three fronts.

1) If you're going to do an All-News format and you don't have much money, at least you do it all during the day on weekdays. AM Drive, Middays, PM Drive. If you break it up, people will fall out of the All-News routine. Nobody's gonna remember, "Okay, if I want news, I'll tune in from morning to noon and 3pm to evening."

2) Why in the world did they choose Chad Benson? He's a mid-level syndicated show that has no clearances in large markets. He's not burning up NYC. He's not breaking new ground in LA. If you're going to ruin your All-News All-Day rule, you do it for HIM? You do it for someone whose syndicator is Radio America?

3) I'm no Chad Benson expert. But I'm guessing he's a standard issue "Republicans Always Right, Democrats Always Wrong, Trump Good, Biden Bad" conservative talk show host. I see from his publicity photo he's about 40 and has tattoos. So maybe he's being billed as "Conservative Talk's Next Generation" or something like that. Which is never true because his syndicator knows he won't get good ratings if older people who like conservative radio don't listen.

Why would you put this guy on an All-News station? People who like All-News Radio are likely not that conservative. If they want conservative talk, WBAP is now on both AM and FM. Or you can listen to 570 KLIF. Or 660 KSKY. Or 1190 KFXR. Four existing Conservative Talk stations.

Why not just run Dave Ramsey? He is a big name in talk radio. And he doesn't do a political show, at least not overtly political. Move him up from late night to middays if you must. You already have him on your station.

Audacy has some kind of partnership with Radio America. Many of their talk stations carry Benson or "The Dana Show." Although several of those are late at night.

Is his show political?
Yes, a typical conservative talk show. He's pro-Trump, thinks everyone should vote conservative, you know the drill. What else can he do? He wants conservative talk stations to run his show. BTW, there's also a syndicated host named Guy Benson on Fox News Radio's talk schedule, live 3 to 6pm ET. But they are not related.

I listened to Chad Benson for a while on Tuesday. It seems he's doing the show live just for KRLD, at least for now. He talked about Fort Worth considering a raise in minimum wage, he talked about the heat affecting Dallas, so I assume he lives locally. His syndicated show runs live from 9 to noon ET. That's 8 to 11 a.m. in Texas where he's based. So he's ready to do KRLD for three hours at noon CT. I didn't read anywhere that he will do this on a regular basis. I assume KRLD will carry the syndicated show by delay once a trial period is over.

Geez, I think this is so wrong. OK, I lean liberal. But I'd say the same thing if an All-News station wanted to run Rachel Maddow in the middle of the day as well. As a news station, your lack of bias is your calling card. Everyone can tune in KRLD and hear the news, all the issues, without one side or the other feeling the news is slanted. Then for three hours in the middle of the day, that rule goes out the window? A pro-Trump conservative gets a three-hour show?

Facebook comments on KRLD's page are brutal. Mostly opposed to the change. Seems like people appreciate the all-news format, even during the midday. KRLD even advertised themselves in the past as "No political lean, no bias." Not anymore.

I noticed KRLD didn't do any advance promos or mentions during their newscasts. I'm a heavy listener during morning and evening drive and not one did I hear mentions of this show. Just a push notification from the Audacity app on Monday just minutes before the show started.

You're seeing this more and more. At one time, KTAR Phoenix was all news all day, and then they added Ramsey, and then they added Broomhead, and now they're mainly a talk station with newsblocks in the morning and afternoon drive. They also carry Chad Benson. So this may be where KRLD is heading. KTAR is owned by Bonneville. They also own KIRO in Seattle, and that station is also mostly talk shows during the day with news blocks in drive time.

These stations think the news audience wants conservative talk. My take is it chases the audience away to KERA, but maybe not. The reality is the basic news audience is disappearing, and they need something to hold people around a little longer outside of drive time. Straight news doesn't have the appeal it once did.

Inside Radio is calling this a "market specific" edition of Chad Benson:

RAMP says it's a DFW edition:

Hmm, so Benson is going to work six hours a day? National show from 8 to 11 a.m., KRLD from noon to 3 p.m.? It's not impossible. Todd Schnitt in Tampa and Lars Larson in Portland OR had been doing two shows a day for a while. But in this case, I'm a bit suspicious.

Maybe this is how KRLD is selling this show to advertisers. But let's meet here in a few months. I'm pretty sure Benson is not going to still be doing six hours a day after an initial introductory period. He might start the KRLD show with a local issue, like a minimum wage hike in Fort Worth. But I'll bet after a commercial break or two, a repeat of the national show will kick in.

Unless KRLD sees all the bad publicity it's getting on social media, rethinks this idea and goes back to all-news, all day.

I agree. Sometimes you just want a break from the politics.

Benson was doing his syndicated show plus a local show on KTAR for several years. But it would make sense to eventually transition to a local/syndicated hybrid setup or just slot the syndicated show in after awhile.

Probably simple math. Benson doing 15 syndicated hours a week for KRLD is cheaper than paying an anchor and writers for the same work. I agree, the localized show is a loss leader.

On the other hand, middle of the day has less audience than morning or afternoon drive. So they also have less budget to spend on staff during those hours. And any audience they attract with talk will translate to an increase overall. Talk radio has higher TSL than all-news.

Rex Ravita needs to get over his self. You do your job and don't demand ownership do what you want because you don't own the place. You just do your job the best you can and if you have horrible bosses, look for a new job. This political views decision to quit KRLD demonstrates your lack of journalistic integrity. Your stories would be slanted toward your political views because you feel so strongly about your political views, possibly without even knowing it.

That's what he did. You're just upset because you disagree with him.

Your overblown reaction is just another example of how radio has gotten itself into a demographic dead-end. His is the generation that will be shaping the future. Your reaction is that of someone who's stuck in the past.
